This is the way we will communicate in the future… however, by doing it now we will not have to wait until later when speed will catch up to the present data rate so we no longer need to be patient with laggy draggy stuff. Sounds great in theory and in reality it looks impressive a lot.

I thought the same thing as soon as he said your car can be tracked with GPS anywhere and it has webcams on it. They’re also working on a technology in new cars where they can disable your car remotely. Then you’ll have police shutting down young pretty girl’s cars on back roads in the country… Plus if a terrorist gets ahold of the code they could shut down all vehicles in an entire city. Some parts of the future are looking cool, but some are downright scary.
Hmm sounds like a Dystopia within a lightly veiled Utopia to me. Plus Yarcofin you seem to have pointed out a very basic and alarming scenario that probly wud have minimal safeguards in place.Especially if Government officials are fond of leaving Laptops on Trains,Buses etc.

OK so it’s not cellular - and by “cellular” I mean you can be downloading something (huge) near one tower/router/transceiver/centralpoint, travel as far as that signal will transmit till I get to another tower/router/transceiver/centralpoint, and the other tower/whatever will take over my connection seamlessly without any signal drop so my download never pauses or stops?

Seriously, this is huge. The whole move toward data streaming from everywhere is like a big freaking ocean wave, and we’re all floating in our little inner tubes with no idea where we will be, or whether we will even stay upright, as opposed to getting face-planted in the shallows. (Newspapers, anyone?)
I hope that Smart Car has extra airbags for when the driver rear-ends a semi while surfing the Web. Or, in turn, gets rear-ended by some other clown watching video of himself driving.
We make it far too easy to get a driver’s license in this country. Anyone stupid enough to text while driving should have their license pulled for five years, first offense. And on top of that they should be forced to pay all expenses required to have the O-line of the Pittsburgh Steelers jump up and down on their mobile device while they are forced to watch.
(Don’t EVEN ask me about drunk drivers.)
Leron, Here on the mainland they are talking (states I don’t think national) of banning cell phones in Autos of all flavors of hands free and I am all for that. It’s very easy to see that the wimax auto implementation will be banned also. That was a bad demo of wimax, it could be really good for passenger access on bus or train. I drove a Prius with rear video (necessary cuz it’s rear window is tiny) which was fine but used only when backing up. FWIW the ultimate horror for me while bicycling is to encounter a soccer mom/pop driving a SUV from the burbs with a cellphone in their ear.
Not long ago I was pulling toward a red light when I saw something hurtling toward me in my mirror. I yanked the wheel over and stomped the gas pedal and just managed to avoid a Jetta straddling two lanes, still doing 50 mph about 100 feet from the light. I have no idea how we missed, there just didn’t seem to be enough room.
When I arrived at the intersection I pulled alongside and rolled down my window, expecting a confrontation. The driver didn’t even look at me. She was busy on the phone. I honked my horn and she jumped like she’d been tazed. And I realized that she hadn’t even noticed me before then. She was not dissing me, she was simply oblivious to the presence of any other humans at that point. Not good when piloting a ton or more of car on a public highway.
I think hands-free phones are pretty much as dangerous as hand-held ones. The legit studies I have seen say the distraction level is about the same. You may have another hand free but your brain won’t tell it the right thing to do.

It was really good to see the Wimax booth through Rocketboom! and I was surprised at the quality of the train vid Intel used to demonstrate the technology. As far as I know Wimax has problems with mobility.

a wireless antenna should be setup high in order to get wimax…. and mostly the range is within 1 or 2km around(sometimes lower than that) the more you go far away from it the less signal you get…. but this is a amazing technology and it’s like broadband internet…. u can get wimax from a service provider… but most places are not available… :)
