It’s basically Alice going back to Wonderland having no past recolection of going, then because the Red Queen is in power and everything is depressing, and she has to kill this beast for the Red Queen to lose her power and Wonderland to return to normal.

I enjoy thoroughly how all the people that are saying the new Alice movie was bad, probably haven’t even read the book– or know that it started as a book for that matter.
Disney’s rendition of the animated Alice in Wonderland was really a far cry from the atmosphere and motifs created by Lewis Carroll’s 1865 novel “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” It’s really a shame that so many people have come to associate Alice with Disney’s happy-go-lucky portrayal.

I think Tim Burton’s movie addressed a great deal of the key themes that the novel portrayed- specifically with regard to the emphasis of growth vs. shrinkage throughout the movie. I suppose its meant to reflect the frustrations a child may feel when going through puberty.

@Max– The issue of death is actually quite prominently mentioned in the novel and I suppose is meant to reflect the idea that it is a very real threat even today. The macabre atmosphere of the movie did a wonderful job of highlighting this theme, and points where Alice comes to the realization that wonderland may not be so wonderful as well.

I’ve heard that from a lot of people who didn’t read the book. But purists who HAVE read the book were disappointed in the portrayal of Wonderland. Not because of the story: obviously, this is Alice RETURNING as an adult. But more because of the character and politics of Wonderland…it just wasn’t the same place at all.

I thought it was pretty good. A bit confusing but still good.
I liked Alice in Wonderland. Not sure what Molly was expecting, but it was fun and interesting, and the visuals were great. The story was better than Avatar’s lame rehash of just about every other movie before it. Alice isn’t perfect, there are a few slow spots, and I’m upset that the Hatter didn’t recite the entire Jabberwocky poem, but it was enjoyable for the most part.
And yeah, what was up with the lip syncing? Annoying.
People that HAVE read the book aren’t disappointed by the portrayal of Alice, Wonderland or any of the creatures therein. I know I’ve read the book and seen several versions of the movie, including the Disney one– and I can say that the only point of disappointment with regard to this movie is that it didn’t go far enough. There are alot of underlying themes from the book that should have been brought up, but what ended up being release was in no way “not Alice in Wonderland” as emoly has said

On the contrary, this rendition did the best job so far of capturing the novel and its original intent with regard to the themes and portrayal of the characters.
There was a degree of “hollywood” added to the movie, specifically related to the additions or subtractions in the storyline, as there is for every movie released these days, but society dictates this, so there isn’t too much the few people that disagree can do.
I thought the movie was great.

I actually liked Alice in Wonderland (I saw it on the day it opened), but you have a point the story felt like an after thought since the costume designs and CGI took first priority. But it was enjoyable to me still. I really think they should have made the story fit the books.

Hmm… Liked Underland. Liked the idea that it was a society, not just a random collection of logical puns and jokes. Liked Alice getting up and kicking ass. Liked underlying theme, if pretty obvious from the start, that her dream was a memory of her first trip to wonderland/underland. Loved the Bildungsroman ending.
But then I enjoyed Avatar too. Eye candy, and a story, simple and obvious, but well told.

Alice in Wonderland and Alice through the looking-class are genius books. The movie however was very disappointing…
If you think very hard about it, and have a good imagination to boot, then the storyline makes sense. It was like an expansion upon the original Jabberwocky poem from “Through the Looking-Glass”. The only thing that pissed me off was the fact that the vorpal sword never went Snicker Snack D:<

I’ve heard the same. I know a lot of people who have read the book who absolutely hate it. I hear that it misses the general lunacy of the book.
I liked it for it’s fighting of gender roles, societal expectations and the fate/free will messages in the movie. Then again, my only knowledge of Alice in Wonderland before seeing the film was from it being picked up by the hippie movement in the 60’s.
I think it’s shame that they didn’t stick to the original storyline from the books of ‘Alice’ - the casting, makeup, comstume, scenery e.t.c. were fantastic!

Hello, Alice in Wonderland is only like one of the oldest stoner stories in the world, so yeah its like, supposed to be confusing, thank you. And Edison did invent things on his own, but he also liked to rip people off and claim their inventions as his own. Think of Edison as why it pays to have a good PR team. Tesla did kick his ass however so that was good. Tesla made better light bulbs than Edison and in less time too. Teslas AC is far superior to Edison DC.

i went to see alice in wonderland this past saturday and i don’t see why people think it is so confusing. and for it not having a storyline, it definitely had way more of a story than the book or the cartoon version. it’s hard to make an understandable plot for a story that is mostly nonsense, so cut the movie some slack!

No way! I loved Alice in Wonderland. Yeah the effects were amazing but that wasn’t only the amazing thing about it! I thought the characters were really interesting and complex, you just have to maybe delve into it more. I thought it was a really fun movie to watch too… I might be biased though because I love Alice in Wonderland… and most Tim Burton movies… c:

No. Its meant to be dark, and confusing, as if she was in a dream. But she isn’t. So with all the odd little twists and what nots, I thought the movie was wondrous.

@Kyguoshu Well no shit it’ll be better than the cartoon, that was a cartoon, while this is some hardcore CGI. But I agree with Molly, it wasn’t as great as people made it sound. We have so many people following Tim Burton as a god, and they’re oh so loyal, they forget what good movies are.

you raised an interesting fact. One that needs to be examined. Instead of saying movie “y” sold “x $ mIllion”, we should in fact say “Z” people saw the movie on its opening week end.” Reason being that ticket sales reports never take into account the rate of inflation. Inflation will garrenty that whatever we see next is ” the highest grossing movie ever”.
I won’t be watching Alice after this review.

Inflation rates are normally taken into account. Plus they are often so discernible, that the yearly 2% or so won’t really make a difference unless you compare with real oldies. If the film is any good it’s most likely sold out on the opening weekend anyway I’d think.

I guess it all depends on expectations. And like someone said, it’s not like the original book had a clear, coherent storyline either…
I just saw Alice in Wonderland (2D) today. I went in expecting it to be NOTHING like the books, because that’s what I’ve heard. I went in expecting good costuming and art, and Helena Bonnam-Carter with an inflated head.
It was ok.
I can see how going in expecting it to be even remotely like the books (Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass) would bring MUCH disappointment. Most people who liked the movie never read the books.

Individual performances were good, especially Anne Hathaway’s, and as long as you weren’t going in there expecting the original story (WHICH IS FREAKING BORING ANYWAY AND I FORCED MYSELF TO READ IT MANY TIMES AS A CHILD) a pleasant time was to be had.
