Function over form. Paint isn’t a chemical brew that is inline with the ideas these 4 people are experimenting with.
Most paint isn’t eco-friendly. Why bother with aesthetics when the raw material is sufficient.
Houses are painted inside and out to keep nature from interacting with the walls, and for looks. Looks are a personal preference. No paint needed on a plastic panel.

As someone who sailed across the Atlantic, I can attest to the fact that living on the water for any appreciable amount of time will confer an explicit understanding of conservation and minimalist living.

I urge anyone who is serious about the environment to take a long trip on a sailboat. It’s not only fun and an adventure, it is also quite eye-opening.

It’s also a great way to lose weight. I lost 25 pounds in the process!

I grow a lot more food, in dirt, in a smaller area.
ok, I guess in NYC there is not much room for a garden.
But what about a Community Garden?
That would be a much better idea. A group of people getting together, to cooperatively gain access to some land, as house block size is all you would need, then prep the soil, by hand! With a fork, no rotary hoe!
Then sow some seed, tend the patch and eat the produce.
This kind of project because it is not very accessible to most people.

    Reply
  55. cyberteque

    Hell yeah!
    This is just so idealistic!
Where do they get their diesel from?
    The nutrients for the hydroponics?
I would have applauded a community garden, but this is so pie in the sky, rich hippy bullshit!
Sorry, but I grow more food than that, in a smaller space and I don’t burn any diesel!
Another thing, the 5 month span of this project, I just bet they would not want to spend a winter on that boat!

    Reply
  56. cyberteque

This boat is NOT self sustainable!
Where does the diesel come from?
    or the hydroponic nutrients?
or the water they initially filled their tanks with?
How about any kind of meat, dairy product, coffee, tea, flour, sugar?
You would need a pretty big boat to grow enough produce to barter for all the things you would need.
    Nice idea, but misleading.

    Reply
  57. cyberteque

    Absolutely!
I have a hard time with this, it’s so pie in the sky!
What about the diesel that boat burns?
I grow a lot of my own food, recycle stuff from hard rubbish collection piles and I do it without burning any diesel.

Apparently they don’t burn any fuel. It’s powered by wind, solar and water generators. But they still need a boat to tow it. This is mainly a proof of concept though, showing what CAN be done fairly simply. Hopefully it expands and renews interest in floating cities.

Hey, very fascinating, this barge. I didn’t fully connect the founder’s statement between “nobody was thinking of rising seas” to the existence of this barge. Does that mean this barge is some prototype for when we start losing land that people can live on the sea? Or is it a demonstration of what we should be doing more of to reduce emissions? Very cool either way!

I know I’m a real dweeb for noticing/mentioning this, but those double toilet seats are very, very close to each other.

Interesting how political ideologies are locally varying cover ups for the same inner predisposition, apocalyptic fixation in this case. These people are New Yorkers, hence they arrange the environmentally sustainable peacenick version of Noah’s ark.

If they were from Texas or Arizona now they would be stuffing their houses with guns, zillions of ammunitions and gallons of fuel, drugs, tinned food, batteries and electric generators to be prepared to the general imminent disruption of society. And as soon as Ella and RB camaraman dared to trespass for an interview, they would unleash the dobermans.
