    @ctso74 because you made a horrible pun or because you think it’s called an old wise tale when in fact it’s called an old WIVES tale, which is derived from colonial times when house wives only form of entertainment in between cleaning, cooking, taking care of children, etc. was to gossip and tell stories with each other.

    Since the dogs they’re talking about in this video were active in the Swiss Alps, it wasn’t Whisky in those small casks, but Brandy, which is made from distilled wine as opposed to grain.

    the alcohol makes them feel warmer but cool of faster because blood flows back into all the extremities… so all this whiskey makes them able to move or die faster, on or the other…

    very un rocket boom, the real problem is that the brandy expands you blood vessels raising your skin temperature but lowing your core temperature. Not a single rescue dog wares it. It’s just a tacky tourist thing……

    It’s a cask of Brandy (to revive one’s spirits?). Alcohol tends to dehydrate people though but people with a thirst do want something to drink. Wikipedia says, “Alcohol consumption increases the risk of hypothermia via its action as a vasodilator. It increases blood flow to the body’s skin and extremities, making a person feel warm, while increasing heat loss. Between 33 to 73% of cases of hypothermia are complicated by alcohol.”

    @ROCKETBOOM: Get your facts straight! It’s an urban legend, that these dogs carry whiskey around. It’s actually just hot herbal tea. Alcohol doesn’t warm you up – it just makes you feel warmer but leads to a even faster decrease of body temperature if you are lost in the woods and slowly freezing to death.

    And where’s Molly?! XD

    My theory is that this was never made to be funny, it was made to piss you all off; a means of ROCKETBOOM showing contempt to all those that showed hatred to their Save the Date series.

    I knew the Saint Bernard thing, making this even worse than it was if I hadn’t. Not only that, but there are some issues with the “fact”. It doesn’t “warm their throats,” instead it makes them feel warmer throughout their whole body. Alcohol opens blood vessels, causing more warm blood to reach the outside of the body, where you feel cold. The problem isn’t that they get drunk, it’s it actually *lowers* body temperature, because heat is easily lost on the outside of your body. Boring and untrue.

    I thumbed this down because it was false.
    St Bernards never actually have a barrel around their neck aside from in paintings and for entertaining tourists. and when they do they have milk. Alcohol to a person with hypothermia is one of the worst things one can do, it will constrict their blood vessels and kill them quicker.

    As I recall from legend (go ahead Wikipedia it and prove me wrong also) it was BRANDY. And while they wouldn’t get drunk – the temporary expansion of their blood vessels (not arteries) would eventually cause them to LOOSE heat and freeze faster.
    Think I remember hearing about a replacement “substance” but forgot what it is.

    Unfortunately, as lovely as the tale sounds, it’s not the case. The barrel comes from works of literature, fiction; the dogs never actually carried barrels of alcohol. It was also more commonly said to be brandy, not whisky.

    That’s not actually true, St. Bernard’s have never had a barrel around their necks. This mistake started after a painting of one during a rescue, wearing a barrel around its neck. The artist later admitted that he added it in to make the painting more exciting.

    The problem with drinking alcohol in the cold is that it DOESN’T warm you up. The illusion of warmth comes from the heat that’s leaving your skin as the alcohol evaporates inside your bloodstream. It turns out that alcohol is the very last thing you want to drink when you’re cold.
