The Bible is the literal word of God, but yes you are right, there are metaphors and over 200 different types of figures of speech that are used in different spots to express points etc. But the Bible should be taken literally anywhere where it is not obviously using a figure of speech. Boses punish workers all the time if they want to, though granted in todays society usually not in a physical way. Stoning of anyone was done to teach people reverence for God, and His commands, which if followed always lead to happiness and civility, neither of which exist in very large quantities in todays world.

It was Christians by the way, that lead the fight against slavery, have you seen the movie Amazing Grace? It tells the story quite well.

You really ought to reread Exodus 21:7-11 these verses teach that a man may never sell a female slave to foreigners, if he has taken her to wife, if he is not happy with her, he must send her out free, he cannot sell her or get any money from her. This passage is primarily assuring proper treatment of a female servant. These slaves either sold themselves, or were sold, by their fathers to pay debts, or gain money. Jesus came to set slaves free. We are all slaves to sin.

Yes, if you own a slave, the only reason for owning them would be to use them for some type of a gain. Like a worker at a job. Slaves were real property in this age, The master had most to gain, by keeping his slaves very healthy, however, if they did not serve him well, he could punish them. God here is protecting the slaves from extreme abuse, by declaring a punishment for anyone who kills 1 of his slaves. A slave beaten badly, & not killed will be of very little use for a while to his master.
If you are God, and you determine right and wrong, then maybe you are correct. God has the authority and the job of determining what is right and what is wrong, since we are His property, whether we like it or not, and will have to answer to Him for how we respond to Him whether we like it or not.

Jewish Men or women could be held for 6 years, foreigners could be held forever. The entire world has changed much in the 4000 years or so from these practices. If a man had sex with a female slave, she became his wife, and he had obligations to her, that God layed down for her protection.

There is nothing in the Bible that teaches or condones or even speaks of that I am aware of torturing slaves. Slaves work for their master, their master provides the slaves needs, so they can keep working for their master. Some slaves in history have been treated very poorly, but at the same time, if you carefully researched it, you would find that many slaves were taken very good care of. Once again Christians in Britain & America lead the cause of abolishing slavery.

There were slaves treated like dirt (a lot of them) and other’s nicely where the liked the master. However that is irrelevant.
If you actually read what the Bible says, he is forbidden from selling her, she is to go out free. If a man had sexual relations with a slave, she was to be his wife, and treated as his wife. Slavery exists very well in all of the world today, especially in those parts of the world where it is so heavilly condemned. The borrower is the slave of the lender, income taxes are another form of slavery, that doesn’t appear to the slaves to be slavery.
There are accounts in America of slaves willingly joining the fight with their masters in the civil war, which was fought to abolish slavery. There were many slaves in America who by their own written accounts loved their masters. Their masters also loved them. Yes slavery can be a very, very tragic situation. At the same time, there were cases, where both the slave and the master, saw very good benefit to their situation as such.
I guess it depends on what definition of torture you want to use. Torture is usually something done to an enemy, to force them to reveal things they do not want to reveal. Beatings are usually either abuse, or punishment for a crime. There is not one verse in the Bible that encourages rape, of anybody. There are verses that speak of what is to be done if it happens. 4000 years ago, there were very few rights for women, the ones that there were, were laid down by God.

It may be done poorly but tax money is supposed to be spread elsewhere to make the country in various ways. Just look at europe as an example. No..not usually. You are thinking of the first things that come to mind but what about sexual torture or the torture done for the sake of wanting to see or have people in pain like the jews in the holocust. For a lot of things they did was impractical. Since someone could be worked to death (practical) but they were also tortured on the side (no practicallity).

Well the Bible is the most common book on the planet, so I don’t think you really wanted evidence for its existence. A painting is proof that there was a painter. A building is proof that there was a builder. Organized complexity, demands an organizer. Hand grenades and nuclear weapons never organize anything. No number of humans could build a working seed or strand of DNA from raw materials. Study and think about the infinite complexity of these. To say they evolved is an insane fairy tale.
Zechariah is not talking of God giving a command to somebody to plunder the houses and ravish the women. God is telling them what is going to happen in the future, because of their sin, sinful men rebelling against God and serving their idols will take the city, plunder the houses, and ravish the women. The Jews in the Holocaust were in a war situation, sexual torture usually is a result of war situations also, or hate crimes. God condemns rape, He does not encourage it.
If you read these passages, I do not see any problem here, they are at war, they could have killed everything living, if they were merciless. They kill those fighting against them, and allow the rest to live, slavery is a better option than death. The regulations with the women are to give her time to mourn her losses, and I believe for cleanliness, at least ceremonial cleanliness if not literal. Virgins were not killed, I believe because they were young enough to forget their idolatry.

The verses that I have been looking at, are talking about men wanting to take a woman as a wife, who they have left alive after winning a war against her people. After a month of grieving, many of these women I would think, may be ready & willing 2 become the wife of these men. There may be some cases of rape, in those cases, I do not find 1 verse in the Bible, where God is in support of rape. Jesus taught the 2 biggest commandments were 2 love God, & 2 love others as oneself. Rape is not love.

Somehow, the book tells one consistent story, from beginning to end, which would suggest an overseer, of the whole. There are 100s of prophecies scattered throughout it, none of which have been wrong. 100s of which have very obviously been fulfilled. Isaiah lived over 500 years before Christ, yet in chapter 53 detailed his crucifixion & rejection by the Jews.

It was written more than 500 years before Jesus was born. Jesus Christ alone fulfills this entire chapter (Isaiah 53)in His life, death, burial & ressurection. This was written by a Jewish prophet to the Jewish people, who eagerly were awaiting their Messiah. Isaiah declared that when their Messiah came, the Jewish people would reject Him, which they did, though Jesus Himself declared He was sent to the Jews, & was Himself a Jew. He was crucified (pierced) between 2 thieves among the wicked etc.

There was an overseer: the Catholic Church. And Isaiah didn’t prophecy a thing. Jesus was familiar with the writings of Isaiah, as were the authors of the New Testament. There never was a giant census by Caesar in that day, so the story of traveling to Bethlehem was utterly made up so that Jesus would fit in with the prophecy of the Messiah being born if Bethlehem. No one knows how much of that story is made-up, but people writing books based on past books isn’t divine. It’s fan fiction.
The Catholic Church did not exist until well after Jesus death, even though they like to claim Peter as a pope, he never was. The Dead Sea Scrolls contain a complete copy of Isaiah that dates well before Christ, and this prophecy is contained in it. It is also in the current Jewish Bible. Practicing Jews for the most part are still awaiting their Messiah. Jesus certainly knew of the prophecy, but it would be a little difficult for Him to arrange to have Himself crucified between two thieves.
