Cool
2nd
flying cars… finally
nice
That must be terrible on gas though…
still not a delorean with folding wheels though…
Nice. A little bulky to look at but a nice concept.
terrafugia = good project code-name
terrafugia = bad product name
they need to rebadge it
if people need help saying a name than it’s unacceptable
esp since it’s a flying car and terra sounds like terror
Some people are saying stuff like “Probably has bad gas mileage” and “It’s too bulky.” But this is the first of its kind. If it becomes a larger market, then more gas efficient and sleeker designs will pop up.
I doubt this is really going to hit the mainstream, due to the fact that not everybody can fly, but if it can find its niche, then I think this is a really cool concept.
And maybe someday flying cars will be the norm, and teens will be expected to get a driving and piloting license.:P
4 mpg lol
No doubt… This was said that flying cars would happend around 2002…. not really!
How far/high can it fly on a full tank of gas?
I want one…
cool
they should call it a flymobile
Your job must be pretty sweet…
how do you know, have you inspected it or made some research on it?
I like it. Let there do one in every house in the world.
Hell Yeah! Commercial Flying Cars here we come!!! XD
sweet… two flying cars in every garage!!
Is Spinners and fuzzy dice on the option list..
I’ll take Elspeth and a plane/car hybrid thanks. That thing looks so awesome. If only it was fuelled by electricity … and not a gaz guzzzzlerrrzzzz
Next step - getting it to fold up into a briefcase! ;)
So, what kind of mileage does it have? 0.5 miles per gallon?
LOL
Fuck Chrysler, THIS is the kind of car company the government should be investing in.
Flying cars, we’re STILL crashing them into each other. With these, not only will we we collide them in mid-air, but now they’ll FALL onto anyone who happens to be underneath them.
Master driving vehicles on the ground first.
YOU ARE REALLY HOT ELLIE…UUUHHHH
who will buy this thing
A Car and Plane So cool I want it when I’m 16. It’s like a Hovercar which is a very famous dream!
Carl needs a new haircut.
this is way cool, but imagine the new ways criminals would abuse this…
omg that would be hysterical, it just starts raining flying cars of death from the clouds
Nein, his hair is das cool
Very cool Ellie!
Wow, I want one of those!
But they’ll have to change that silly name first….
That’s neat - but I bet it’s expensive.
Nearly as cool as the Moller Skycar.
Hello sir may i joi-MOTHER OF GOD LOOK AT THOSE MELONS NOOOOOOOOMNOMNOMNOM!
Let me guess, this must be Ellie’s new series: Everything but the subway!
The flying car! Oh my God, I want one!
nice interview
I’d cut off a foot just to get the flying car.
I want one!!
Anyone want to fork over the cost of it along with the cost of the lessons?
JK!
their site says you can preorder one for 10k deposit
this is so james bond :o
but why the annoying background music?
Turn down that dorky music so we can hear the interviewee.
How would you drive?
Then how would you work the pedals?
As neat as it is, no one in a normal household will buy this and it will not revolutionize personal transportation. Just another gimmick.
Anything that needs a runway, control surfaces and props shouldn’t even be thought of as a “flying car”.
The only way to get a true flying car is to reinvent the wheel. There is really only one thing, which we don’t even know if such a thing is possible yet. Anti-gravity propulsion.
this would be a hit to the market if it was a VTOL aircraft
Very cool!
duuuuuh, you press the accelerator to speed up and the brake to brake lol. its automatic, dont you listen?
Not if you could make something like that, that’s legal to take off from your average american freeway.
I just left a response at clarkhowarddotcom about this, he was ranting how this carplane and others like it will be the future. Complete BS! Being this monstrosity and others like it cost 200k+ and 5-10k a year in maintenance and an unfathomable amount of cost in fuel, daily individual mass air travel will never be a reality. Also, the FAA is already too busy with the airlines industry, millions of bad drivers flying at lower altitudes would be INSANE! This is a hobby for the rich, PERIOD.
Of course it’s for the rich. Of course this model will not be in the garages of normal people like you and me.
But then, so were the first cars. When the first cars were made they were expensive like sh1t, there was no infrastructure for them and it was just for the rich.
But saying “it will never happen period”.. I donno, sounds a bit ignorant to me. The future will show.
I agree with you completely ICDWILL117
You don`t need to be an MITian to make this mini Aircraft.
Nice get by RB. There has been a lot of articles but this is the first actual video Ive seen.
it must be so weird to be driving down the street and you see a folded up airplane right next to you
too cool
It’s a live long dream of mine to own something like this
SPREAD THIS VIDEO!!!!
watch?v=dg_IDby4X7o
Clearly marked on the side of the Terrafugia Transition is the word, “Experimental.” The first experimental car, plastic container, lamp, and brand name drugs are all expensive at first due to high startup costs and patents. But, this could theoretically be rolled out cheaper, using more efficient fuel, alongside a streamlined ground/aviation infrastructure in the future. This man contributes to that vision. Have some faith.
Curious to know:
-how much they value it at when it releases
-fuel economy
-if my country will flock to it with open arms (Australia)
I just wonder
Awesome!
Woo hoo! Yaw control!!
Oh it’s automatic? I wasn’t paying attention. lol
do want
It is not a good plane or good car. I own a plane and own a car, each designed for that purpose. My plane will out plane this one (+200mph) and my car will out car this (+150mph).
Now when traveling by private plane you land and need ground transportation, its a pain sometimes, but often the airport has a loaner car (free) or rental.
Cool design but I don’t market, sorry.
It gets around 30mpg while driving and a little less while in the air (I think!). It’s going for around $190,000 US dollars.
Yep! This version is pre-beta, so they said.
It gets around 30mpg! I think that’s pretty reasonable.
Finally a flying car! They already came out with jetpacks last year. Now all we need are talking dogs, snarky robot maids and super-high rises to recreate the Jetsons.
a little bit closer but still not exactly right.
They need something that can fly/take off/land without a long runway. Think Back to the Future! :)
something about a chick in a tight red top and tight white jeans does it for me.. she’s hot!
So you’re interested in a car that doesn’t need roads?
The fuel efficiency better be good. I don’t want to run out of petrol while half a mile off the ground in the middle of nowhere.
Hovercarzz yo.
sweet!! i want one of those!! but it would suck if you did go out of gas half a mile in the air, and what airport would just let you in spur of the moment so you can fly. but other than those things it would be awesome to have one!!
Light single-engine aircraft achieve around 500 miles on one tank. Which only takes about 4 hours.
This strikes me as not gery green… just a new company making money while ignoring the whole world out there trying to reduce carbon and stuff. Seems like a richmans new toy.
Estimated cost of $194,000…..COLLAPSES! ya..that is just a little bit out of my price range…
Hey, that thing appears to be an engineering marvel! Very cool. Must be great to have, say, during jammed-up traffic when approaching the expensive toll booth of the inbound George Washington Bridge – one would have to decide: “Should I use the bridge’s lower deck, upper deck, or simply contact Newark/Teterboro Airport for clearance?”
I had some questions for Dr. Dietrich: a) If I got one of these Terrafugias would I have to get an extra endorsement on my driver’s license? b) Can I use low octane gasoline, or must it always be high-octane? (I’m on a budget) c) Can I customize the color of the wing-tip lights? d) Would I need a helmet? e) Does your Terrafugia come with a tube of touch-up paint in case one of those bumpers fails to protect me from damage due to somebody slamming their car door into my wing? f) Will you be offering 0% financing with ‘nothing down’ (airplane humor) in the future?
Thanks. And again (back to being serious), cool vehicle. I guess I see now that if you can dream/imagine it and are driven (car humor), then you can make it happen.
Nice interview!
I lol’d.
This drivable plane would make 100-400 mile weekend getaways really convenient. LA to Las Vegas would be sweet except for Sunday when you’re hungover and have to fly home. Only problem is light sport rules limit the aircraft to 2 seats. Maybe a lot of retired people who drive the country in RV’s will put one of these on their wish lists.
Most light sport aircraft are $100K and if you can afford that, moving to $200K isn’t that big a deal. The loan periods are usually 10-20 years
very nice, how much
She thinks she could afford to fill-up at an Exon station; what a bunch of dreamers.
what’s the millage, how fast is it and it better have an alarm or something cause i sure know if i had that 13min. later i’d be up on blocks lol
That’s why you just look at the fuel gauge. You do that with an airplane too…..and your car.
You’re a complete dumbass if you think the average person could afford a 190k carplane, another 10k+in maintenance and storage a year, and we won’t even estimate the gas price being their 30MPG estimate in the air is complete BS.
Oh great, old people flying around, yay. And don’t forget FWIs!
Again, this is a hobby for the rich and will never be the norn for most of us for a variety of simple reasons.
That’s estimated mpg, and I guess if you’ve got enough money to buy a 190k toy, and that’s what this is, a gimmick, then ENJOY! lol
My argument is only against the idea that this will ever become a normal everyday vehicle for the masses, the days of the jetsons will never come. Lets keep the skies free of idiots.
This would take drunk driving to a whole new level. I want to see a closer look on that Red Ferrarri, if I am correct, in the back.
Roadable aircraft are more a novelty than practical. If you’re wealthy enough to afford maintenance for such a vehicle, buy a Mercedes and a Piper Cub instead. Why settle for this hybrid? I can’t envision mass-production of these vehicles.
Invention of a personal jet backpack that put thrust out for a couple hours would sell like hotcakes, though.
Everyone keeps asking about fuel consumption - -
According to the webpage, it gets 5 gph (gallons per hour) and has a 20 gallon tank. With an average cruise speed of 115 mph, you can safely go about 400-450 miles on a tank.
Flying cars its so dump… retarded & dump… oh wait, yeah dump :<
Why?
1-Old ppl driving… um fliying.
2-Drunk ppl XD
3-Air REAFIC frm airlines….
4-Dump
5-Expensive
6-Dump
7-Needless
8-Dump
9-Uneficient
10-G.W. Bush (i would kill to c bush fliying one of those xD)
it’s spelled dumb, not dump…
BooBs
cool idea not worth a whole 3 minute video explaining a plane that is also a car has a steering wheel. I also hate to say this but Ellie looked a little bored.
That’s not a flying car, that’s a driving plane
I know that after the flying car this may appear pathetic, but does the High Tech RocketBoom section anything in preparation for us bikers? You know, a $25 gear shift for the mountain bike, or a $5 device to fix a flat tyre when you are far from home and don’t want to get your hands and clothes dirty? you name it. Don’t pooh-pooh lower-end technology.
Not the car part - the plane part. Actually - YES! Like I said - back to the future! They were cars without roads!! :)
seriously, if i saw one of these parked, i would steel it.
Nice improvement over Bob Cummings’ car-plane of the 1950’s … for those of us who remember the “Bob Cummings Show.” I always enjoyed the scenes where he converted his car (which towed the wings like a trailer) into a plane and took off. The Terrafugia doesn’t require one to get out the car. Reminds one of folding wings used by the Marines and Navy to save room aboard aircraft carriers.
Wow, Ellie looked really hot.
i think they’d catch you. you’d be the only guy who had a car that turned into a plane.
He should use some hair gell, would make him look much more desirable both personally and profesionally. Hehe.
yeah.. but I think they say Flying Car to get ppl’s attention b/c ppl have been waiting for such a thing for a long time. If you call a Flying Plane, well there’s nothing really special about that. And if you were to compare to planes it’s probably not a very good one.
“Roadable Aircraft” - nice catchline. lol.
And Ellie is really, really hot.
Rocketboom likes their hot correspondents.
Well, I’m not going to complain :P.
but ya get it right? :P
That’s nice boobs
cool i guess
I think he’s joking, hence the “lol” at the end of his comment.
I would want to be going down the hightway and then take off.
XD
i was replying to YOU
wow, now thats a nerd lol
Oh, well then no, I’m just assuming. It looks like a heavy car being pulled by a small car engine…
Why is there a gamelan rehearsal going in in the dubbing studio? It’s a very annoying sound.
perfect getaway car
Is it just me or doesnt it look incredibly fake from 1:02 to 1:09 ??
must use a fuck lot of petrol
it looks like a plane…. id call it a plane..
i want one ….
its just you
Yeah…I don’t think so. People already drive badly enough in two dimensions.
It’s just you.
It will never fly by the authorities. Now we will have to deal with a whole new dimension of problems, not mention road worthyness (no bumpers, etc).
To name a few real issues:
-weight & balance problems by the public.
- possible crimminals & terrorists gettaway vehicle or weapon.
-drunk flyers after closing time over your house, playing ‘chicken’.
-engine faillures over surburbs, crashes, bear misses, illegal entering airporsts, take-offs & landings.
The list goes on and on.
It has no windshield wipers / sprayers.
Does it carry a jack and spare tire?
No, rather have a Piper Cub and a BMW for that money.
its a driving plane not a flying car at all
boobs!!!!
“Maybe a lot of retired people…will put one of these on their wish lists.”
If old people start buying and flying these things en masse…I’m moving underground.
in lacoste
wtf is with the gay music in the background
this car = terrorism deaths and world war three end of the world is in 2012 this will be the start of it.
I’d like Ellie Rountree to sit on my face.
I’ve seen a cat who was afraid of his shadow, yesterday. Are you afraid of shadows, too?
this isnt a flying car
haha
I’m more interested in the red Lambo in the background.
Ok its a driving plane.
Damn d car… check out this red hot chilli pepper….. wow…
more like a “flying airplane”
FINALLY!!!!
What we’ve all been waiting for…
an AIRPLANE!!!!!
Ive been waiting for this invention 4ever!!!
NathanSt, someone with enough cash to afford this should have at least rudimentary understanding of Latin. This isn’t a McCessna
you obviously don’t know many people with that much money
money /= intelligent
even if a guy made a shitload of money, his wife will probably be a pretty little idiot barely capable of walking and breathing simultaneously leaving a basic understanding of latin out of the question
now my question is why does the guy who built this monstrosity not have enough advertising sense to name it something pronounceable?
this is more like a 4-wheel plane.
