    terrafugia = good project code-name
    terrafugia = bad product name

    they need to rebadge it
if people need help saying a name than it’s unacceptable

esp since it’s a flying car and terra sounds like terror

Some people are saying stuff like “Probably has bad gas mileage” and “It’s too bulky.” But this is the first of its kind. If it becomes a larger market, then more gas efficient and sleeker designs will pop up.

I doubt this is really going to hit the mainstream, due to the fact that not everybody can fly, but if it can find its niche, then I think this is a really cool concept.

And maybe someday flying cars will be the norm, and teens will be expected to get a driving and piloting license.:P

As neat as it is, no one in a normal household will buy this and it will not revolutionize personal transportation. Just another gimmick.

Anything that needs a runway, control surfaces and props shouldn’t even be thought of as a “flying car”.

The only way to get a true flying car is to reinvent the wheel. There is really only one thing, which we don’t even know if such a thing is possible yet. Anti-gravity propulsion.

I just left a response at clarkhowarddotcom about this, he was ranting how this carplane and others like it will be the future. Complete BS! Being this monstrosity and others like it cost 200k+ and 5-10k a year in maintenance and an unfathomable amount of cost in fuel, daily individual mass air travel will never be a reality. Also, the FAA is already too busy with the airlines industry, millions of bad drivers flying at lower altitudes would be INSANE! This is a hobby for the rich, PERIOD.

    1. TrueEyes

Of course it’s for the rich. Of course this model will not be in the garages of normal people like you and me.
But then, so were the first cars. When the first cars were made they were expensive like sh1t, there was no infrastructure for them and it was just for the rich.
But saying “it will never happen period”.. I donno, sounds a bit ignorant to me. The future will show.

Clearly marked on the side of the Terrafugia Transition is the word, “Experimental.” The first experimental car, plastic container, lamp, and brand name drugs are all expensive at first due to high startup costs and patents. But, this could theoretically be rolled out cheaper, using more efficient fuel, alongside a streamlined ground/aviation infrastructure in the future. This man contributes to that vision. Have some faith.

It is not a good plane or good car. I own a plane and own a car, each designed for that purpose. My plane will out plane this one (+200mph) and my car will out car this (+150mph).

Now when traveling by private plane you land and need ground transportation, its a pain sometimes, but often the airport has a loaner car (free) or rental.

Cool design but I don’t market, sorry.

Hey, that thing appears to be an engineering marvel! Very cool. Must be great to have, say, during jammed-up traffic when approaching the expensive toll booth of the inbound George Washington Bridge – one would have to decide: “Should I use the bridge’s lower deck, upper deck, or simply contact Newark/Teterboro Airport for clearance?”

I had some questions for Dr. Dietrich: a) If I got one of these Terrafugias would I have to get an extra endorsement on my driver’s license? b) Can I use low octane gasoline, or must it always be high-octane? (I’m on a budget) c) Can I customize the color of the wing-tip lights? d) Would I need a helmet? e) Does your Terrafugia come with a tube of touch-up paint in case one of those bumpers fails to protect me from damage due to somebody slamming their car door into my wing? f) Will you be offering 0% financing with ‘nothing down’ (airplane humor) in the future?

Thanks. And again (back to being serious), cool vehicle. I guess I see now that if you can dream/imagine it and are driven (car humor), then you can make it happen.

    Nice interview!

This drivable plane would make 100-400 mile weekend getaways really convenient. LA to Las Vegas would be sweet except for Sunday when you’re hungover and have to fly home. Only problem is light sport rules limit the aircraft to 2 seats. Maybe a lot of retired people who drive the country in RV’s will put one of these on their wish lists.

Most light sport aircraft are $100K and if you can afford that, moving to $200K isn’t that big a deal. The loan periods are usually 10-20 years

You’re a complete dumbass if you think the average person could afford a 190k carplane, another 10k+in maintenance and storage a year, and we won’t even estimate the gas price being their 30MPG estimate in the air is complete BS.

Oh great, old people flying around, yay. And don’t forget FWIs!

Again, this is a hobby for the rich and will never be the norn for most of us for a variety of simple reasons.

  91. Roadable aircraft are more a novelty than practical. If you’re wealthy enough to afford maintenance for such a vehicle, buy a Mercedes and a Piper Cub instead. Why settle for this hybrid? I can’t envision mass-production of these vehicles.

Invention of a personal jet backpack that put thrust out for a couple hours would sell like hotcakes, though.

Everyone keeps asking about fuel consumption - -

According to the webpage, it gets 5 gph (gallons per hour) and has a 20 gallon tank. With an average cruise speed of 115 mph, you can safely go about 400-450 miles on a tank.

Nice improvement over Bob Cummings’ car-plane of the 1950’s … for those of us who remember the “Bob Cummings Show.” I always enjoyed the scenes where he converted his car (which towed the wings like a trailer) into a plane and took off. The Terrafugia doesn’t require one to get out the car. Reminds one of folding wings used by the Marines and Navy to save room aboard aircraft carriers.

To name a few real issues:
-weight & balance problems by the public.
    - possible crimminals & terrorists gettaway vehicle or weapon.
-drunk flyers after closing time over your house, playing ‘chicken’.
-engine faillures over surburbs, crashes, bear misses, illegal entering airporsts, take-offs & landings.
The list goes on and on.

“Maybe a lot of retired people…will put one of these on their wish lists.”

If old people start buying and flying these things en masse…I’m moving underground.

I’ve seen a cat who was afraid of his shadow, yesterday. Are you afraid of shadows, too?

NathanSt, someone with enough cash to afford this should have at least rudimentary understanding of Latin. This isn’t a McCessna

you obviously don’t know many people with that much money

    money /= intelligent

even if a guy made a shitload of money, his wife will probably be a pretty little idiot barely capable of walking and breathing simultaneously leaving a basic understanding of latin out of the question

now my question is why does the guy who built this monstrosity not have enough advertising sense to name it something pronounceable?
