steam turns turbines which are hooked up to big generators that create electricity

That was interesting but Ella could have elaborated more on “cogeneration plants” which produce electricity and use the surplus thermal energy for space and water heating. These plants can reach over 90% efficiency. Con Edison, in operation since March 1882, distributes 30 billion pounds of 350 °F/180 °C steam each year through its seven cogeneration plants to 100,000 buildings in Manhattan from the Battery through 96th St.—the biggest steam district in the world.

Is it wrong that I’m the only one who saw the word Steam in the headline and immediately thought of vaporised water, rather than Valve?
Also, I could see how steam would be created in a powerplant, as it’s the byproduct of the cooling process. What I don’t get is why they transfer that steam all across New York, instead of condesating and reusing the water for cooling. I think that would be more water efficient.

But seriously, when confronted with some unexplained gaseous phenomenon it is often best not to questions yourself as to its origin. It has been said by the oracles of the ages that quite often he who in fact smelt it may have in fact dealt it. It should be noted that the oracles have been known to be wrong from time to time.

Do you really want to know where steam on New York streets comes from?

It’s doggy doo. Yes, doggy doo.

See, when a dog has to take a dump it blows out a load that reflects heat from the sun or some technical shit like that. The dog generate 31 DTU’s of energy of the steamy shit it released.

And SINCE I know you don’t know what that means (becuase I’m making most of this up, with a bit of help of spell-checking) it’s like bullshit, only from a shiatsu.

Believe it or not, hot water pipes are actually an effective way to transfer heat.
Water has a high specific heat, low viscosity, can safely be pumped through pipes at high rates, is readily available, and poses no environmental risk. It’s one of the best substances overall for moving heat around.
Brick, rock, and sand, are poor thermal conductors, although proper insulation would be better.
Cogeneration and centralized production are efficient enough to offset the losses over local generation.
