OK… .dirty, but “Steamy Man holes…”
Wow…. can’t believe they wrote that even.
god that chick is pale
uh…random. If I cared I would’ve wikied it.
I agree
lol. Im with Molly on this one. I thought this vid was abt Valve. Oh wait… It was…
i agree
Valve?
hey wait ¬¬ tricky title….
Lol, I thought it was going to be about steam in which I play my wonderful games.
I think of Half-Life, too.
what?
Um, I still don’t understand why there is a factory that generates steam, I now understand how they make it, where they send it and how, and how to tell if it’s dangerous, but WHY do these buildings need steam delivered to them?
steam power?
ya, i was lookin forward to see the working developers in steam lmao
we need to use this steam to make steampunk robot servant.. or a half life gravity gun.
haha i thought of team fortress 2…i think thats what its called well whatever it is it look like a cartoon and ROCKS
steam turns turbines which are hooked up to big generators that create electricity
That was interesting but Ella could have elaborated more on “cogeneration plants” which produce electricity and use the surplus thermal energy for space and water heating. These plants can reach over 90% efficiency. Con Edison, in operation since March 1882, distributes 30 billion pounds of 350 °F/180 °C steam each year through its seven cogeneration plants to 100,000 buildings in Manhattan from the Battery through 96th St.—the biggest steam district in the world.
(source: Wikipedia)
Let’s have Molly and Ella generate some steam together. woot!
that’s cool
lol when I thought of steam I think of Day of Defeat
When I thought of steam, L4D came to mind… o_o
<3 love it
lmao!! oh dea
half life was the first steam game, lol
saw title, then forgot to log into steam
Lmao I expected half-life
yeah i totally did too :P
I was like dam thats a realistic CS map! *clicks on vid* wtf is this?
aww man, i though i was gonna be getting interviews with Gabe Newell and the fine folks at Valve… ah well, good vid, enjoyed it ^_^
steam is hot
it’s turning into Fox News..
anchor link…hands over to reporter with namecheck
presenter voiceover, tiny interview, ends
I’m Ella and this has been rocketboom..
these are TV style cliches…think RB used to be cooler and one step beyond this
old school approach.
I doubt anybody can be up to a comparison with Fox News.
Right today somebody is highlighting FN’s competence in Middle East geography. This map is out to become legend.
I’am Sometimes Awake All Night Thinking About Vapourised Water !!!
Half life 2 FTW!!!!!
holly is a hot nerd
Useful information + hot chicks = win
holy shit ellen glows in the dark lol …. yay an aussie is on rocketboom!
i mean ella
Is it wrong that I’m the only one who saw the word Steam in the headline and immediately thought of vaporised water, rather than Valve?
Also, I could see how steam would be created in a powerplant, as it’s the byproduct of the cooling process. What I don’t get is why they transfer that steam all across New York, instead of condesating and reusing the water for cooling. I think that would be more water efficient.
Molly rocks!
why do the people of new york need steam?
Are new yorkers still using steam powered elevators and toilets! Jeez!
Guess NY is showing its age, but at least they’re trying right.
its rlly scary how pale she is i thought i was whit but holy shit!!!
its called white balance. which basicly means shes not that pale, the balance isnt right.
Yay for Aussie representation on Rocket Boom! GO ELLA!
BUT - one question wasn’t answered. WHAT is the steam used for!?! I’m sure it’s not some sort of Victorian-era Steampunk fad gone horribly awry!
Steam in pipes.
What for?
Molly: Your Steaming HOT! ;-)
Steampunk: brought to you by the New York city council.
But seriously, when confronted with some unexplained gaseous phenomenon it is often best not to questions yourself as to its origin. It has been said by the oracles of the ages that quite often he who in fact smelt it may have in fact dealt it. It should be noted that the oracles have been known to be wrong from time to time.
lol
I was in DC once and this, I think, explains that as well.
how about Steam Community? D:
“steamy manholes” sounds like a gay porn
Very well made, Ella.
Don’t worry, the shadow of the hot dog debut won’t curse you long.
The steam plant’s not the only one steaming. ;)
Ella Morton is SMOKING hot!!! or steaming hot?
Either way…
why steam? WHY STEAM??
When I clicked this I thought it was about Valve. YOU HAVE FAILED ME ROCKETBOOM.
fuck, thought its about valve….
Steam is used for heating and cooling buildings below 96th Street in Manhattan. Check out the ConEd link in the video info for more steamy goodness!
67th!!!!111one lolz
I digress, you do get cuter every time I watch Ella.
And I thought that it was used to keep the road temp above 32 to avoid freezing and all the dangers that come with that..
me 2
me 2, bad vid rating it a 0
I KNOW, faggoty rocket boom, ever since ive subscribed they make shittier and shittier vids >_>
honestly, If you need help coming up with new topics rocketboom, I can help. Hell, I know a couple people who would love to do nothing BUT coming up with interesting topics. If you need help, just ask, don’t continue making stupid videos.
I though this video was about video games. :P
new yorkers are full of hot air :P
HAHAHAHA
I’ve always found it weird whenever I saw it in a film, but I just assumed it was no big deal. I wouldn’t feel reassured by this video if I lived in NY :)
ok, that was a shitty one.
Oh i thought it was going to be the story of steam the game thing
yeh me too
So that’s why New York is so cloudy!
End of story-line, VALVE would never let us down…oh wait.
I don’t know about everyone else, but I find alot of these interesting.
I second that
“steamy man holes”
oh god, bad image in my head….
steamy molly holes, omnomnomnom
lol “When I see the word steam, more inclined to think of Half-life”
This episode is steaming
… pile of turd.
I just thought it was coming from steaming hot poo.
Interesting. Thanks!
Steam = Half-Life. Forever.
Steamy man holes… xD
0:48 is that Nat?
meh. it got better like halfway through. still not what i’d call a GREEEAAAT video.
Thanks, interesting stuff.
Cool stuff
Maybe underground hobos are taking massive hot dumps. This could account for some of the steam coming out of the manhole covers. Look into that.
Ha, when I saw the title of this video, I thought Half-Life aswell.
Hmm ive always wondered about that,,,now i can go on wondering about something else…Thanks RB
wait I missed that, what purpose does the steam serve? I’m from London, we don’t have steam under the ground.
hehe. half life. epic game…
the whole time i was thinking about steamy man holes… it was kinda freaking me out…
Yet another example of patent office stupidity:

Ha! True: the first thing I think of is Team Fortress 2…
teehee steamy man-holes teeheeheeheehee!!!!
Lol, I think of Portal. xD
But you never answered the question: what is the steam used for? You say it goes to buildings, but for what? Does any other city in the US do this?
Good man, you are incorrect, punch an Iranian, it gives you good luck …
LOL JK
I think of portal : P
lol ew portal :P L4D!!
I thought of the program steam.
In other words, much of Manhattan still uses steam power !?!? WTF!
You make me all steamy MOlly I love you :)
Same. lol
OMG what a waste of my time Molly.
Who cares about steam, unless it’s servers are down.
Wow, you read your scripts, Sooooo well.
I <3 mememolly.
Make more stuff about you building Jenga or whatever. I rarely think about anything else.
And on that note. i only sub’ed to you because I needed, (not wanted), needed to hear which lie was the the real one.
OMG just tell us already!!!

1:01 It’s the pipes screensaver!
wow, what a terribly inefficient way to transport energy. more than a hundred miles? no more crack for you, mr. engineer…
On cold winter days, the steam might just be coming from a sanitary sewer manhole. The volume and temperature difference often creates steam.
Do you really want to know where steam on New York streets comes from?
It’s doggy doo. Yes, doggy doo.
See, when a dog has to take a dump it blows out a load that reflects heat from the sun or some technical shit like that. The dog generate 31 DTU’s of energy of the steamy shit it released.
And SINCE I know you don’t know what that means (becuase I’m making most of this up, with a bit of help of spell-checking) it’s like bullshit, only from a shiatsu.
Interesting report. Have never been to NY and have assumed that the steam I see in movies and television shows was lost steam similar to the loss of water through pipe leaks. But what is that steam used for … heating? If so, is that all/it?
R- Rocketboom? Are you…?
I don’t care where the steam in NY comes from.
Wow, I didn’t know all that o.o
Your so smart, Rocketboom should hire you!
Good work Ella & Molly, you “foreign” girls are taking the show to new heights, keep up the good work.
Vapor =/= steam.
True steam is invisible, what you’re seeing is water vapor …I’m probably the 200th person to point that out
Believe it or not, hot water pipes are actually an effective way to transfer heat.
Water has a high specific heat, low viscosity, can safely be pumped through pipes at high rates, is readily available, and poses no environmental risk. It’s one of the best substances overall for moving heat around.
Brick, rock, and sand, are poor thermal conductors, although proper insulation would be better.
Cogeneration and centralized production are efficient enough to offset the losses over local generation.
steamy man holes??
is your energy transference system better? please explain
Steam, the gaming client?
You betcha, and them’s the best kind.
lol sounds like a porno “Steamy Man Holes” XDDDDD
STEAM FTW
FUCK YEAH
