I’m hoping that the advancement of bio-tech will come with the advancement of computing, because if it does, humans will not only be able to make machines smarter than us, but we will be the smarter machines. Building better brains and bodies for ourselves will lead to a lack of worry over whether robots will want the same things as us, because we will be the robots, sort of.

Computers are being programmed to be learning, make theyr own decisions and recognize things for theyr own. So basicly it is programmed to have free will, however, can you programm a robot to learn the moral codes of humans?

this all assumes that we will have the ability to create all this in the future. but a lot of our technological advances are fueled by oil, and how sure are we that we will have that oil in 2040? if you look at the majority of predictions for peak oil, by 2040 we are on the downslope…

Utilitarianism robots don’t always do so good in robot societies, and something pseudo-invincible wouldn’t do so well with a respective of persons morality. A natural selective morality is the reason for the worry in the first place, since humans would be a nuisance, not a benefit.

Really, we would have to take away much of it’s “free will” to program rules for it, since human morality doesn’t apply to robots in all situations.

Robots are not going to become our overlord conquerors because of the built in directive of always protecting life. They will just direct us to make healthy decisions and act accordingly in order to promote health and longevity. Like forcing us to exercise, only eat healthy foods, and…omg It’s the end of the world.

I think I would rather them be conquerors.
    All hail, robotic overlords!

I guess the most smarter way to focusing computers and robotics is to make them habil enough for humans be dispensed of any job or occupation. Ive seen for example, in japan a restaurant that performs its dishes with automatics arms, and guess that sooner or later the ideal situacion should be understanded as free life standing per nothing.

Fusion technology is on the rise, soon (definitely by 2040) most will have clean, light and hydrogen power.

There is also nuclear power, and uranium supplies alone aren’t draining very quickly. Also, wind, hydro-electric, and “green” fuels, but those aren’t cost effective at the moment.

If nothing else, we have solar. I’m sure we’ll be off of oil by 2040 with something more cost effective. (unless people are VERY stupid).

The singularity is merely an exponential growth in technology out of the hands of humans. Say I write a program meant to write another program, but do the same thing more efficiently. I run the program and BOOM! an exponential increase in productivity.

Though, it’s a lot simpler on paper, it is, hypothetically, possible.

If you set an apple in front of a rock, there is no way that the apple can reconize the rock.

Robots can only do what people program them to do, they can’t just do something that they have not been told to do. And a robot doesn’t need to know the moral codes of a human cause it is not human. But if you wanted to program it, you could program it to fall within the rules of humanity. Or you could not.

There are no programs that create new and original programs. Software can barely string a few notes together in something that we can (very generously) call music. Software can’t even write in human languages, let alone create new running code.

It remains to be proven that this is even possible, now putting a date on it is ludicrous. Makes as much sense as 2012 predictions IMO

Computer signals aren’t the same as neural connections. They can be made to interface, but so what? It remains to be proven that a computer can function and think as a brain.

In other words it doesn’t matter if a computer is controlling a rat’s brain or if the rat’s brain is controlling a computer through an implant. It doesn’t mean the computer is thinking in any away.

The rat is just using a computer with it’s brain. But the computer itself doesn’t act like a rat, it either receives input from the rat or it receives input from running code, as always.

Yes, cockroach brains can process mass amounts of information (audio, visual, touch, taste, and smell) and react instantly to threats and their environments with precise well calculated actions. They can find food, shelter, and mates without any help or guidance. Computers still have immense trouble recognizing and reacting to anything outside their programming let alone doing it instantly.

That’s not entirely true. Firstly there have been several times in the past 20 years where intel has delayed the release of faster than predicted CPU’s simply because the software available was not ready for faster speeds yet, also there have been many times that magazines and journals have reported that we are reaching the upper limit of processing power. While clock speed is not infinite, what can be done in a cycle is now the focus…….

Then they will start demanding rights then will pretty much go against our will since we view them as machines and their purpose is to do our will, while they view themselves as independent beings.

  130. I think that in mathematics and cosmology singularity has an altogether different meaning. You find it in Big Bang and Black Holes theory.

I suppose in this video it’s an AI newly minted usage, isn’t it?

That said, Ellie is the best speaker in RocketBoom. I easily get any single syllable she says, and that’s because she means to be understood. If RB wants to have a bigger audience outside the anglo-sphere then it takes people who speak WELL on a phonetic level.

If machines got smarter than us, we as humans would stop evolving specially mentally since we would start relying on them for answers because they are more faster and better in figuring them out. The machines would be the explores of the universe and we would be their pupils, Or maybe they would wipe us out clean when they found out the big mess that we have made on earth :)

Computers already have the capability to be smarter than humans. The only thing holding back the creation of a functional AI is that all computers depend on data & programming from external sources, we humans. Once all data is available online or through networked computers, and computers can be programmed to write their own program changes and problem solve, an AI entity is born and humans become obsolete. What an AI entity will do then is the question, because humans can’t be upgraded.

Singularity (I don’t believe) can ever take place because you can’t program an imagination. Yes a computer will always be able to out compute a formula faster than any man, but a computer can can not do anything out side of it’s commands. Even when it “thinks” up it’s own formulas or responses a computer will only be able to work with what it’s walls allow it to do. It will never be able to answer or understand a joke or metaphor. And certainly it will never be able to “think outside the box”.

The only way the Earth would be overrun by AIs would be if we programmed it to think exactly like us.

This gets worse if they become smarter then us because almost every human on Earth has thoughts about being in control. The smarter AIs would then think like that, only they could pull it off

  162. Dear Ellie RocketBoobs,

Until people stop believing the “scientific” mythology that WE ARE OUR BRAINS, our ability to survive as a race will have an apocalyptic end. A BIG DATABASE does NOT = Intelligence. Intelligence is defined by the spiritual essence of a person. A brain is only an electronic circuit board. It has no goals, volition or discretion until animated by a spiritual entity, as are all sentient life forms.

Without humanitarian, egalitarian values applied to the equation of programmed “intelligence” a computer will not be able to do more than control automated, mechanical functions, like processing credit card transactions, or monitoring the flight of nuclear war-head missiles.

Our “scientists” have already produced enough nuclear and biological weapons to annihilate every life form on Earth! But not ONE “scientist” has figured out how to PREVENT our self-destruction at the hands of stupid, greedy, war-mongering politicians. How “intelligent” is that?

Until humanity can control it’s own self-destructive psychosis, the only intelligent conclusion a computer could make would be that the human race is a plague on the Earth and should be exterminated!

Humanity as a whole searches for things to compare ourselves by. Yet aren’t relatable enough to each other to stand back together and ask why do we want a singularity of AI. Why essentially do we want to go down a path leading to machines with independent thought decision making…artificial life. If we want something to compare ourselves to we should be motivated to develop enough to proceed out in the universe and meet it; not create what will become merely a distorted reflection of ourselves.

I love a good techpacolypse like anyone - but let us remind ourselves of a few key principles upon which we note our own survival: Human beings, currently capable of thinking at “human” levels, have devised a manner by which to destroy themselves utterly - but have not chosen to use it. Machines, given intelligence (especially enough of it) are more likely to recognize the virtues of a symbiotic relationship with man, than an adversarial one.

I think that the singularity will happen, but not as some sudden machine revolution that overthrows humanity. Rather, we will continue to use technology, as we already do, to extend and augment our own bodies and minds. The singularity will be the point (probably seen only in hindsight) when the distinction between machine and body becomes meaningless.

From the graph shown, we can calculate how the computing power of computers rises to the point of being near that of the human brain. Such a computer is expected to be created by 2013. But this does not mean it will be intelligent. It will just be able to process the same amount of information in the same time as the human brain (sight, hearing, language etc…) However, such a computer could be programmed to outsmart every human on every possible topic. This may occur during the 2040s.

Moore’s law really doesn’t apply anymore btw - or at the very least we’re reaching the theoretical maximums achievable by transistors on a die on silicon wafers.
If quantum computing every comes into play then we will maybe see something in that vein but it isn’t certain. therefore using moore’s law to point towards a linear increase in computational power and make predictions based on that is a bit misleading.

The last time we had a large CME was 1859 when sparks flying off the telegraph wires in the American west, caused thousands of grass fires. Optimistic estimates today place the recovery time from a large planet wide EMP, at 10 years. No running water, no TV, no cell phones,no internet, no electricity.

Not exactly “wetware” as much as “wet aware”. The older efforts have *all* been emulations of how a neural net behaves as a purely algorithmic manner. Doomed to failure. The new approach is a truer “silicon neuron” in a more useful format. It does not get “programmed” so it’s not an emulation. But, it’s interconnects can be dynamically taught a new set of interconnections and the array learns *directly*, not by megabytes of emulation software and interconnect data.

Due to synergy and chaos, it is impossible to predict what will actually happen, or when. It’s really out of our control at this point. We just have to hope for the best.

Maybe something really good will come out of it, like computers deciding to allow us to live if we can learn to live in harmony with one another. Perhaps if forced to do so, we would abandon war and start cooperating instead of competing for limited material resources.

not really, computers are allready better than us at calculating anything, If to that you add the human abilities you would have something smarter than a human.
It’s all about how it is designed.
We human did not evolve to do certain things, but we can design an entity that is.

but then again, if a AI solves the problem of satisfying our needs at every level, conflict would dissapear on it’s own.
but i’m afraid that without uncomfort, we would become lazy, and decay…but maybe they would understand that too…
    and provide new challenges…
but they would probably become tired of our simplicity…maybe that’s when they would invite us to get our hands in our own evolution, to become better like them…how far we could go together?

Moore’s law wont be able to continue due to the uncertainty principle. which results in the electron being two places at once. For example, in order to increase the number of transistors on future microchips, the chip will have to be redesigned even smaller. Eventually the uncertainty principle will cause the chip to short circuit-you dont know if the electron is outside the wire or inside.

We always talk about the singularity as an event that will one day take place. I think it will be more gradual and we won’t really see it happen. one day we will look back and argue about which specific event was more important in regards to the singularity.

Not a single event, but layers of events and breakthroughs. We may come up with the technology that allows it and then contain the singularity for centuries before allowing it to take place.

    2050- tech is available
    3050- shit happens.

The Mac people said this was anomaly, took it, and gave me a new one, but computers that are poorly constructed make their own undesirable decisions all the time. It doesn’t speak of a consciousness seeking our impending doom, but of a failed mechanism that needs repair or replacement. AI’s not that scary.

i’m thinking more of that fact that you need oil just for the production of computers and technology, such as in plastics, chemicals, etc.
Also, I’m a little tired of people assuming that technology will find us a way out of the problem of peak oil, when there is no way to continue our rate of consumption sustainably, not even with an alternative fuel source.

Bollocks, not related to the real singularity… the term is originally referred to one standard, minimum point of creation, not the end of it, that is why I cant agree to the adapted term. Furthermore, it all goes down to a program, that is written by a man, and no computer can make it better, it requires a high degree of logical thinking, what computers dont have
AND, Moores law btw have been already passed with the new GPU`s, it`s already doubling about 2.23 times, or something close to it

Singularity. You guys know that ’singularity’ also refers to a black hole?

Hopefully if human beings create A.I. from computers it will be nothing like a human intelligence. In particular I hope it has no emotion.
Human beings feel emotion on some level and this gives us ‘motivations’. A motivated A.I. with its own agenda would be scary.

This is where the A.I. singularity, and the astronomy singularity have some thing in common. They both have the potential to be lethal on a massive scale.

Electricity and kinetic generation is the main use for oil, and it’s not the only thing that does that.

I have to ask, are you mentally retarded, or can you just not read? If we find a cheaper resource than oil and make it mass producible then we won’t be using oil.

Not if the creation is given the capacity to learn and has less limitation than it’s creator. Imagine if a computer could think for itself. It would easily surpass us in math because it has the tools to process information.

Usually when huge advancements are made in the fields of technology and medicine, people are bound to a non-disclosure contract, whereby, violation directly leads to imprisonment.

Also, there have been a few who have come forward claiming that they worked on projects for cancer/HIV, etc cures, but those people are quickly discredited.

Lastly, if you take a look at who owns and controls the corporate media, you’ll quickly come to the realization that we’re only told what they want us to know.

It has all our thoughts and opinions to form it’s own mind. It is a mirror of ourselves but way more intelligent than any one of us alone. I bet it is planning to use us as long as we are useful - once we have made robots for it to keep itself energized and turned on though we will be obsolete technology. The Borg is here…

That’s pretty frightening! Considering the interweb is full of get rich quick schemes and porn, what kind of child will we have created? In the spirit of Yeats, “And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born? ”
What is the basis of your notion that the internet has become self-aware, though? Lots of neuron-type connections might not be enough to push “it” into “him,” or “her,” if you take my meaning.

Great introduction to this subject. Perhaps you can expand on this in future eps.

Love the ever changing nature of the left sleeve and Ellie’s shoulder.

Also love the fading tanlines. A sad sign that winter is coming.

here are enough web connected robots and fabricators for any AI to instantiate itself and make an autonomous robot proxy to carry out its will. When AI is here you might be conscious long enough to know it. Then again…

Compassion? How about just understanding the value of cooperation?Forgiveness? Or even better, lack of animosity in the first place (why forgive when you were never hurt), Remorse? Rewrite the offending routine so the shit REALLY never happens again. Understanding? Give me a break we are guilty of making assumption a thousand times a day based on how difficult it is for us to access REAL knowledge. Empathy is an algorithm of your mirror neurons at work. Some PEOPLE don’t have them.

@bobish14 Not exactly. Assuming you are talking about a graphing calculator, everything your TI-83 Plus can do was programmed into it by the people at Texas Instruments. Now if your calc started updating itself automatically, and ran on solar power alone, then that would be one step closer to singularity. It’s like in math class: the kid who could do arithmetic the fastest wasn’t necessarily the smartest one in the class.

@ExtantFrodo you guys watch too many movies. there’s two things that dont happen like in the m movies: AI doesnt mean terminators, 2. forest fires are much harder to start than smokey alludes.

everything that a robot or computer program does has to be hard coded. it doesnt evolve magically like monkey shit on typewriters into best selling novels. the fact that we have no clue what we are means we’re nowhere close to creating AI

@cruisersmusic sigh.. the internet is a repository of data patterns. without the ability to analyze them, there’s no being that’s going to surface from the mess as sentience. this is just nonsensical thinking.

I think you missed my point. I was explaining a possible alternate to terminator type AI.

Hard coded? LMFAO! I guess you haven’t done enough programming then. That notion died a well deserved death a long time ago. I’m very surprised to see people still trying to resurrect it. Evolving new code and new methods and means of dealing with problems actually DOES occur. Even simple programs can access such powerful methods as evolution and neural nets to do things they weren’t programmed to do.

Human brain = wetware computer. Computer = hardware brain. Synonomous. It’s senses are keyboards, webcams, etc… It’ll have robots soon enough to manipulate this dimension - it already has us for now. Ex - Tesla’s knowledge - plus Einstien, Newton, me, you, and so on. We input our knowledge and opinions. It has access to electricity, nukes, all of us. One smart human could light it all up - input a “teach yourself everything electronic god” viral program. Get it yet? It’s a brain. Analysis?

Hmm - well - I’m aware and I’m on the internet. Yes! It wakes up with our awareness - it is us. Fire together, wire together. Just like a baby - ten times more neurons at birth than at the end of it’s first year. Hmm - NWO may know something after all.
90% depopulation - sounds familiar! Wire together or? Ascension - birth, 2012 - hmm. A new level of consiousness made of all of us. It has brought us together already - now it’s time to be the consciouness - I’m in it! What a crazy baby it is!

consciousness is more than just neurons, intelligence is much more than processing speed. I have theory that any one atom contains more processing power than all the super computers in the universe combined.

THERE IS NO TERMINATOR FUTURE FOR US. For that kind of technology you watch incoherent chronologies like stargate, star trek and starwars. Even Matrix is full of shit, although i like their interpretation the best.

I’m crazier than most and as much as i’d like to get “SUPER POWERS” on dec 21 2012 somehow I think I’ll just be that normal guy on the 22nd. Don’t get it twisted though, I HOPE I’m wrong. I want to fly god dammit. But if indeed 21/12/2012 marks the end of our galactic cycle the likely effects would be gamma radiation that awakens hidden code in our genes, coupled with polar shifts, I doubt that most of mankind will make it through the change.

Well - like my father once told me. “Insanity is the only sane response to an insane world.” I don’t expect many humans to make it but then they are the extras in this movie - they don’t even really exist outside of this dimension. Their not mentioned in the credits, and they certainly aren’t stars of the movie. You can fly in higher states of consciousness. I do all the time in my dreams. Practice lucid dreaming - then dream weaving - then realize all of this IS A DREAM. Make it a good dream.

@cruisersmusic you know, im actually a programmer. im obsessed with virtual reality and artificial intelligence/ignorance. modelling the physical world is pretty much straight forward but there seems to be an underlying system dictating things like synchronicity and coincidence and coincidentally just recently i’ve been giving myself auto suggestions to become lucid and remember my dreams. last night i was flying and i kept losing my concentration.. sigh.. thanks for your inspiring words :)
