1) How comes that they call in Kenya “scrap business” the same thing that in Senegal they call “recycling” (as in one of the last videos from Africa)? A fairer dealing with labels, please. I’d prefer to be a recycler than a scrap collector.
2) Any thought that the “ban” is aimed at keeping valuable resources from fleeing the country in a business operated by unscrupulous foreign second-hand dealers, who rob the copper from Kenya and sell it as gold to European and US companies? Hey you know, I did some scrapping back in the day, too. Cooper, brass and aluminum were paying good prices per pound at the time. Cardboard was something like one dollar per ton: well worth the effort to spend half the morning roaming about, filling my ratty old $300 van, then heading for the scrap master’s scale to cash out (to the tune of 6 or 8 bucks).
There is nothing wrong with earning an honest living scrapping, and nothing wrong with running a scrap yard. There is something wrong with stealing property that belongs to someone else and then reselling it to, say, the scrap yard; and there is something wrong with the yard master ignoring, with a blind eye, what he is cashing someone out for.
How else should a government curb theft of public and private property?
Breadwinner or not, blatant pilfering just ain’t cool, there homeslice.

I feel for them, right now, with my mom being laid off, and my step dad’s bussiness failing, we are now scrapping cables left over from my step dad work and selling the copper to pay for my college, it is hard work.
I hope for their families that the Kenyan Government changes their stance towards these hardworking people, but for the sake of the country, I hope they have learned their lesson and do not destroy more private property.

It’s funny they left the aluminum door I had to recycle myself that would have netted them more money than the stupid copper I was still using.
What I saw in this video, was an exasperated government, doing the only thing it thought it could do to stop rampant theft. I feel horrible for the honest people who are suffering, but they need to get together to police themselves and the scrap yards so the government doesn’t have to step in and take extreme measures like this.
