I live here, and it’s indeed a mess. However, I’m in the area of teaching, and there are still plenty of schools doing fine, so as long as I keep working for locals and in government schools, I’ll be ok. Not sure how the International schools are going to fare, however. Time will tell.

dubai had a very ambitious plan which has been halted due to the recession which is expected bcos its all made with borrowed money from banks . law is very simple you cant pay two installments you go to jail. how the hell can you repay from prison, i have no clue. this really sucks.

Such an interesting city. It was based on an economic view that sees growth as good and -inevitable.- People like Rob Hopkins of “Transition Movement” fame would say that in a time of powerdown, we should look forward to the future as a shrinking world, with less intercontinental travel, money flow, and globalization in other senses. I hope the city realizes it needs to take this perspective into account if it is to survive (one of many possible paths).

I know ex-pats who’ve been in Dubai for 10 years and are now happy to have just left as the construction boom has really taken a bad turn. Dubai may have a skyline of half-finished skyscrapers for a long time to come. I feel sorry for all the Asian migrant workers though, stuck in Dubai with little or no wages, less work and no way to get home.

I’m in Dubai. We certainly aren’t wallowing in self pity, more like a mature realisation of global events. As for sunscreen - people here work too hard to enjoy half of the luxurious pools and playplaces. But recently, a huge week of storms has prevented even the tourists from trying to catch a tan!
