I’m no genius, but I’m a sociology major so that’s close enough… but as a Christian, I think I can explain why Christianity is going down the crapper in popularity. It’s because like, 95% of us love to hate on science, equality, and rational thinking. And people are sorta kinda tired of it.

Something like 50 percent of Americans do not believe in evolution. And more americans can name 20 brands of beer than can ID 20 states on a map.
So, I wouldn’t put too much stock in what Americans think. (See current “recession is over” balderdash being vomited into our media stream by various talking heads.)
I highly recommend the under-promoted and under-seen 2005 movie “Kingdom of Heaven,” in which Ridley Scott uses the Crusades to demonstrate how fanatics of any stripe are pretty much one and the same, regardless of the symbols they choose to hold dear. And how true leaders must push the fanatics aside. As a bonus, he provides a succinct definition of the difference between religion and godliness. Oh, and there are flaming catapults, lots and lots of them. Makes “Gladiator” look like a junior prom.
