As 4 fast browsin’, try out Firefox with the plugins ’stop autoplay’,'noscript’, & ‘remove it permanently’ installed =) VERY fast - AND U can simply click elements 2 run them, or remove them permanently so never loaded again. These also run in Netscape if U create a boolean ‘estensions.checkCompatibility’ key in ‘about:config’ & set it 2 ‘false’. Also set ‘image.animation.mode’ 2 none.

Some people spend hours each day on SNS. If they have a day job, they only have so much free time, so SNS do reduce face-to-face time. I agree there’s no case for diminishing empathy.
Finding things that cause brain damage, jealousy and cancer is what highly qualified people who have given up on finding a cure for brain damage, jealousy and cancer spend their day doing.
No, there is a lack of empathy and face-to-face time everywhere and before SNS. They are created according to the values that produce this deprivation and go global. They are the only way to meet new people. People’s face-to-face time was non-existent before SNS. SNS promotes bad values, the spread of false sociality and they will soon be abandoned, unless they become non-anonymous online.
I disagree. Their use is skyrocketing and SNS will not disappear alone. I have noticed that the SNS leave people unable or entirely unwilling to communicate with those who don’t use them (myself). No hard feelings, just lack thereof.
Their use is skyrocketing only because they have the hegemony of the Internet. People complain and while they market themselves as a competition against other false forums, they will subsume to the problems of false sociality. They make people socialize falsely and for fun only, and that is fundamentally unsustainable.

I’ll add a coupla words.
Both for personal and professional reasons the bulk of news I digest every day comes from Central and Southern America,though I am European. Now, I can’t rememeber a single time that surfing websites in Spanish language on themes socially or politically sensitive in combination with SNS, the lead of the game couldn’t be tracked down to a well charted body of interests, namely:
- US department and CIA’s longa manus: NED and USAID;
- creole (white power) oligarchies in controls of land, mining, banking, and so on.
For that I know it’s Facebook that rules, particularly in Colombia, number one US poodle.
Unions, genuine human rights activists, progressive movements, organizations of natives stay far like hell.
Of course, there’s nothing in SNS in itself that determined this course of events, but it’s a fact that the typical SNS user is the breeding ground more conducive to that kind of interests. At least this is what I’ve been witnessing in Latin America.
We can wonder if SNS is open also to other cultural and political developments, and I have not an answer for that. But the way it actually took shape has a well defined slant.
