remember guys and gals Global Warming not only mean we are getting hotter temperatures, but it also means extreme weather conditions and that includes colder temperatures as well.

Entire communities of homes build of wood and linked together… sounds like a fire hazard

I guess the age of the igloo is nearing it’s end!?! Maybe THAT’S the reason the Mayan calendar runs out in 2012!?! :D

Maybe the movie Waterworld wasn’t so far fetched after all.

I worked for a year on Waterworld as a boat captain, ferrying Kevin & Dennis back & forth to the atoll that was floating just off the coast. But early in the morning it was also my job to dive & check the positioning & security of the huge anchor & swivel holding the atoll to the bottom. 4 other corner anchors could be released & the island rotated for the correct shot. After it was destroyed in the film I was hired to collect all the 50 cal brass casings & debris littering the ocean floor. Quite ecologically conscious of them really.

I agree, we haven’t had much innovation here in the US for floating structures. But there is something interesting happening on the East River in NYC. It’s called Solar 2. The only net-zero (produces all the energy it needs) building in NYC, slated to break ground in 2009. Solar 2 just won the prestigious Holcim Award. What’s the Holcim Award? The short answer is the Pulitzer Prize for Sustainable Architecture. Solar 2 won the Gold Medal, North America, up against 5,000 submissions from 90 countries. Check it out….and go down and visit it if you’re in NYC: http://solar1.org/solar2/

Don’t forget to mention floating islands ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floating_island ), especially the islands of Uros on the Lake Titicaca in Peru ( http://www.andrys.com/peru9.html ). They built “floating structures” already hundreds of years ago!

  27. Hey our brains are a floating structure inside the skull, right? We humans are too adaptive; we melt the ice by foolishly burning fossil fuel, then adapt to the rising water. What else will we need to get used to?

    I am dreaming of Dubai.

  48. What is the source of the photo of the islands at :14? It’s obviously a Dubai design, as it spells something in Arabic. I don’t quite know what, so I’ll have to ask my friends, but I would really love the source for some help

I was just looking at that!

“If you were to look at the proposed islands from an airplane or an orbiting satellite, they would spell a bit of Arabic poetry written by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the prime minister of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Dubai.”

      See article here; 7th paragraph.

After your statement at 1:00 I was expecting/hoping to at least get some sort of mention of the peoples who have long built their homes to float… I remember hearing of it but can’t remember where (somewhere in South America I think - Venezuela?) … Google search suggests Thailand, too… :P Hrmph. It was like this, too… huts built to rise and fall with the river, attached to poles to stay put…
