Speaking of voting, it looks like Andrew B. made the big league news concerning his voting practices.
Nice one, C.C. ;)
Hm.
So, what is supposed to happen when all the info from the voting places starts pouring in?
The notion that the info “will all be made public” makes me wonder who is going to sort the noise from the real issues.
And then what? Are the Twitterites expecting that justice will be done, by someone else? Sure sounds that way. Reminds me some of the 20-century magazine muckrakers, like Ida Tarbel and Ray Baker, who thought that if they pointed out evil, society would naturally root it out.
I’d love to see this coordinated with some of the other election-protection work taking place, notably by the ACLU. Otherwise you’re left with a bunch of pissed-off techies who know the election is being stolen but so what?
Or am I being too cynical? I suppose that’s possible.
All good points leron. To address the static to noise issue, Twitter Vote Report organizers will be sorting through the data, featuring the more interesting reports, feeding them to partners like the Election Protection Coalition and NPR for verification and subsequent action. The goal is for this information to be presented in real-time as a resource to the media and watchdog groups.
Volunteer “sweepers” will be on the case, pouring through incoming reports, cleaning up messy data, and purging irrelevant posts.
We still need day-of sweepers, anyone interested in volunteering can sign up at http://www.twittervotereport.com
Maybe voting should have a specific set of rules that everyone, everywhere follows. From lowest city or town elective office, all the way to President. If you want to vote, we should all follow the same set of rules. Register where you are supposed to, when you are supposed to. Get a photo ID that helps ensure your place in line. Then show up on election day to cast your ballot. Because if you don’t then the only person you disenfranchise is yourself.
They should drum this into kids heads in school, so that when they reach the magic age of 18 they know the rules.
Then when you show up on the day you are supposed to vote, everyone uses the same verifiable, large type, ink-marked, paper ballot that is read by the same type of machine everywhere. The government is responsible for providing enough staff and voting stations in enough precincts to allow a speedy process and then it is done. No Accorn, no screwed up touch-screens, motor-voting, same day registration, no chads, no park bench addresses, no dead people, no NY activists moving to Ohio, no screwing around. The way it is done now is a far cry from “our cherished right and our solemn duty” It is treated like some sort of pinata by way too many trying to cheat the system. If you are too busy to take the time and a proper absentee ballot delivered by your city or town clerk may help you out. But other than that. If this is so important, then do it the correct way. Getting a homeless drunk to cast a ballot is not the route to democracy. Getting off your ass and doing it the right way is.
After the disgruntlement over 2000, you would think that everyone would be on board to establish a specific system of voting that is fair honest and verifiable. But they didn’t. Fraud is almost the secret that everyone knows about but dare not whisper. The fact that this is still being argued over shows how dishonest the system is. There has been no leadership in this area, by either party.
If you disagree with me, that is your right. But this needs to be fixed and now.
Excellent tycobrahe!!!
Bang on there tycobrahe! We just had a federal election up here in Canada but the process bordered on a joke. The alternatives to voting on the actual election day were close to infinite. 16 & 17 year olds were used as scrutineers due to a lack of interested adults. The actual election day fell on a Jewish holiday. I personally witnessed a situation at the local elections office, I had to go to correct my entry on the voters list, where the gentleman in front of me was asked to sign the envelope containing the stub of his ballot! As it was a pre-election day vote they said it was required as proof he voted because the official voters list wasn’t printed yet. Sign my vote? Here in the free nation of Canada? The guy almost blew a gasket and the office staff that had gathered around to hear our dispute didn’t seem to see the issue.
I too believe a little process shake up is badly needed - up here as well and then a uniform method laid down from coast to coast.
Uh, no.
Stupidity by Acorn not withstanding — and let us not forget that they flagged 30 percent of their own registrations as bogus, and no phony registrations went through — there is no voter fraud problem in the United States. The dead have not voted in Chicago since Richard Daley passed away. Court after court has looked at this and found no credible entrance of people showing up to vote in significant numbers who should not, not anywhere, not ever.
Instead, the problem we face is intentional disenfranchisement of those deemed by powers-that-be to be unacceptable voters. A quarter of all eligible black voters have no photo ID, and if you are poor and/or illiterate (or God forbid you speak no English), getting one is not easy. That doesn’t mean you should be denied your vote.
Hundreds of thousands of legitimate voters were tossed off the rolls in 2000 and 2004 by Republicans intent on disenfranchising the poor and non-white. It worked. They are up to the same tricks again this year. This is a much bigger problem than someone trying to sign up Mickey Mouse.
So are the jackasses telling college students that if they vote at school their parents will lose a tax deduction, or standing in front of polling places in Latino neighborhoods demanding photo ID, law be damned.
I agree there should be a simple and uniform process. It’s insane that we don’t devote enough resources to this, and have so many screwy systems all over.
But voting is so basic to our liberties, we should make it as easy as possible.
This doesn’t meant 17 year olds should be vetting applications. But we must resist the temptation to raise the bar for voting.
Everyone in this country has available to them a public education. Many choose not to complete it. They make a choice to limit their potential in society. But, for anyone with at least an 8th grade education there is no excuse for not knowing the rules of how to vote. It is the citizen’’s duty to understand the process. Part of the failure of that pubic education has been the elimination of civics which was replaced by multicultural feel-good dogma.
This process needs to be the same for EVERYONE that is a citizen. And this should only be for Citizens. Part of being a citizen is the ability to understand ENGLISH. When Congress starts conversing multilingually, then maybe that will change and other languages can be taken into consideration.
Otherwise those who pander to these populations are adding to the confusion. The poor and non-white should have the same opportunities as everyone else. if you are illiterate how can you engage in a private act in a private place if you cannot read or understand what you are doing. In fact they do have the same opportunity. If they don’t understand what is going on, then they need to figure it out. And before election day. Voting does not come with and “I missed your birthday card grace period”.
There needs to be fixed set of rules. Period. You register aat the local town or city clerks’ office, you get an ID (picture would be best), you vote on the day. Period. For everyone that wants to participate. It is really simple. If you are too stupid to figure that out and don’t act on your own initiative then that is your problem. Nobody owes getting you to a polling place. You owe it to yourself.
I have been involved in many campaigns and am amazed at how cavalier the public is about this sacred responsibility. You need to educate yourself. This is not hard. The stupid will still be the stupid when this is all over. Taking advantage of that stupidity gets you and they what they deserve. And for the government from both parties to allow this to happen, for this long in order to play some stupid game is very, very damaging to democracy. Otherwise you made a few good points. Sorry if I repeat myself.
Respectfully, I disagree.
Especially about the English part. Which, by the way, is a fairly recent invention in this country. Ballots were routinely printed in multiple languages 100 years ago. Somehow printing ballots in German and Polish was less, um, unpleasant than printing them in Spanish and Hmong, I guess.
And more to the point: There is no requirement to speak English, and there never should be. This is not a fascist state that demands conformity. Yes, we should encourage people to learn English, they will be as helpless without it as most Gringos are walking the streets of any city in Mexico. But the day you disenfranchise people based on their grasp of the mother tongue is the day that something basic to this democracy dies.

The time is here for us to choose between reason and rational argument, and lies and attacks that are caused by fear and absurd notions.
Final argument - McCain chose Palin to please the Christian Right, but now puts us all at risk of 4 more years with a president who is over her head. She believes in creationism, not the real world. We deserve better than that.
Obama and Biden can give us a chance to pay down the national debt the republicans doubled in just 8 years.
Vote SMART.
vote Obama.

Good luck mate. I hope they haven’t already voted for Cain and Barbie by the time they read your comment! ;-)
And you’re right. The world needs Obama to win. And the bad guys need the country to accrue some wealth for them to steal in 4/8 years time. They’ve already got everything that was there! ;-)
Let’s just hope that they don’t get too greedy, and decide to do a bit of election stealing instead! ;-)))

The only way Obama can win is if it’s big. Real big. The bad guys have now had years of practice at stealing elections, and the new ATM I use is now a Diebold. And that’s in Slovenia! Google us!
Vote! Put your fucking hat on, and vote for the black guy! Please!

McCain has already had 4 heart attacks. If he was elected, Sarah Palin (totally god damn screwed up) would be vice president. If John McCain then had another heart attack and died, Palin would become president. The U.S.A. would be messed up, and she could start blowing europe and asia up. who knows?
SO VOTE SMART. VOTE OBAMA

That’s because mccain was too confidident that he would win while Obama was out and about talking and listening to what ppl had to say, he won the ppl of all color, race and religion and won ppl from around the world. If mccain kept a respectful campaign, maybe that old man wouldve gotten a vote or 2, but no, he chose to take it to the next level, which took him to the wrong direction.

Obama has brought people from all around the world, american and non-american celebrating his victory, and ppl right here in america are upset about it? Its a shame to call ur self an american if you still have an issue with color of skin, face it, this day was going to come and Obama was the one!

why cant you simple minded pea brained morons understand that the same banking/corporate nwo cabal owns both major parties. its pretty simple, they get as much as they can done with one puppet party, then when the sheeple get pissed enough they put the other puppet party in charge to calm the sheep and give the illusion that we have a say in the matter.
mccain was NOT supposed to win, he ignored and insulted conservatives so that he would lose, it was time to change to dems for awhile
