Fail (and Win) were terms both used in the ARPANet days in the early 1970s. The term “win” is documented in the New Hackers Dictionary and the Jargon file. I recall using “fail” in that time as well.

You’ll have to hire Lara Croft, or send Elie, to the Sacred Vault of Days Gone By to retrieve the punch cards on which such history may be recorded. Punch cards are a similar data recording medium to magnetic tapes, and stone tablets; sort of like the USB key of today. One filing cabinet of punch cards holds the equivalent of what … oh about 1/2kb!
