Great ep. For maybe the last decade I’ve been saying “Gee Life was better in the last century”. Is this just “angst” over the dot com bubble burst or is it just expressing the ending pangs of USA as a “super”. I do know countries at the top don’t regain it for a long time. i.e. Holland was at the top in the 17th century and hasn’t come close since. I’m sure other countries fit the pattern also. Hey you know the remnants of the Roman Empire receive millions of visitors each year. Perhaps we can get used to manufacturing lots more souvenir refrigerator magnets and post cards in the future. Empire State Building: 102 stories. Went there for the first time in 4th grade. Then my dad took me to the Garden where we watched Willis Reed, Bill Bradley and Walt Frazier kick the Warriors’ butts, 133-130.
World Trade Center: 107 stories. Used to be a freight elevator in Tower 1 that ran straight from the sixth sub-basement, where a lot of food was cooked and the like, to the 107th floor, where Windows on the World stood. When he got on the radio, finally, to speak to the terrified and tumble-dried passengers, he famously said, with classic British understatement: “As you all know, we’ve had a spot of bother.”

Good points, but when looking at the whole picture, no country is the best in everything. US can be counted as the only superpower because of three factors: it has the world´s largest economy, it has the world´s best military and it has very large political and cultural influence on every part of the globe (you know you are in the middle of nowhere if you can´t find a Macdonalds). China and India are lagging behind for the next 30 years, and EU is too busy with its internal problems.

First, I´m not an American, and I don´t get how you got that picture. And there are more aspects to economy than how much money you have, something far more important is how much money you can make. American GDP per year is still larger than their national debt, so it can be still considered as reasonable. Why 9 trillion dollars seems so bad is because actually no other country could handle such a large debt. But by this pace, the loan will get out of their hands.
If you can print as much money as you want no matter how much you have gold, oil or brains, you can have largest economics in the world and GDP for some time but after that will be tha payment. Largest debt, and then, bankrot. Huge bankrot. And when they will be bancrot(all finance piramids are foll one day), you think thay will sit on their butts in theyr island? With theyr army of pure educated idiots? They will eat you.

I´m sorry, I was a bit unclear in my last post. By “making money” I mean how much one can produce goods and services that have a real value. And America is capable of producing those more than anybody else. What my point is that America could get through their current crisis, if they changed their policies. But if they keep importing goods with loans their economy will eventually collapse. And it sounds very unlikely that America would try to solve their economic crisis by attacking others.
