Hey according to the Met’s schedule this show only plays on Thur Nov 13, and all the seats under $200 are sold out! I work Thursday nights, but I can listen to it live on Sirius 78 starting at 20:00 according the click-on link; think that I will! Thanks.

How utterly fantastic! A video interview with people I’ll never hear about again, concerning a show I’ll never see, taking place in a city I’ve never been too.

Any chance you could wake up one morning and realize that maybe, just maybe, New York city _isn’t_ the center of the universe? And that quite possibly a show at the Met means absolutely NOTHING to the rest of the world, and thus, people on the net?

When people talk about how new yorkers are so stuck up and self-centered, this is exactly the type of ego masturbation they’re referring to.

Your logic is flawed - this is hardly exclusive to NYC. Nearly 100,000 people around the world parked their asses in a movie theaters this past Saturday to watch this very opera broadcast live. Too bad this wasn’t mentioned in the interview. I’m was already planning to see Doctor Atomic when they show it in movie theaters again on November 19. Dragged to the first of the Met’s live transmissions by my wife, I’ve since been to a few and I’ve been floored by it – it combines a lot of the great things about watching movies (seat comfort, snacks, different camera perspectives) with opera. You net savvies can probably find some more info on the Met’s website.

You’re right, the broadcast wasn’t mentioned in the interview, nor was it brought up in a few other things I’ve seen about it. Sorry about the misunderstanding, it’s just that for the past week I’ve been inundated with smug, elitist reviews of only-in-New-York shows or events, many of which actually said that if you didn’t live in New York city, you were sub-human culture-wise.

Still, Rocketboom does dip into the “We’re in New York, you’re not!” bucket of smarm a bit too often.

I have to agree with the above sarcasm. What made you believe this would be of any interest to people outside of NYC? The parades were ok, we could watch the costumes and balloons. The street activities were ok because they could happen anywhere. But this? It takes place only in NYC and is so exclusive only a tiny percentage of NYC natives can attend. You remind me of a clique in high school who did things like this just to remind other students that they are “cool” and everybody else is excluded from the clique.

Why not interview Joss Whedon about Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog? That was something the whole world could enjoy over the net. How about the many other net-events and net-shows that are being done because of Dr. Horrible’s success? Why not interview any of them?

I enjoy Rocketboom when you do amusing summaries of interesting things. I find you elitist and boring when you do things like this interview.

Diversity is definitely a good thing in the smorgasbord of art you could cover.

hey Nik “I have to agree with the above sarcasm.” I don’t think “palapa the looza” meant it as sarcasm & don’t that chump know NYC IS the center of the universe & you agreeing with him puts you in the same category in my eyes. “ego masturbation” “elitist & boring” hey fuck you guys & stay the hell out of NYC & Hawaii!

  15. All I hear are the screams/whines of the provincials against an urban center. Take any urban center and the surrounding populace always bad mouths that center. It is certainly true in Seattle where the whole state thinks Seattle is a cauldron of debauchery, the streets are paved with gold and the populace and culture is to the extreme left and useless. In my theory of provincial centrism it becomes quite interesting depending on the urban center. i.e. Portland to the South and Vancouver to the North have their own circle of influence. The overlapping forces would be neat to track.

And of course the big Urban Centers cover massive geographical area - i.e. NYC - probably the whole country. Amsterdam, London and Paris are the same country centers.

As far as Doctor Atomic thank you Rocketboom for providing a cultural insight in a medium I wouldn’t have known about. I don’
t like Opera but I would watch this one.
