What Does It Mean to Be Human?

im a journalist who covered this story back in April of 2006 for Current TV. I think the context your provided for the 2000 refugees being in this shelter is inaccurate. The reason these refugees are here has little or nothing to do with the xenophobic violence of late. We know this because the methodist church had refugees in it well before this violence took place. The vast majority of the refugees are Zimbabwean who are in the shelter due to the crumbling of that country, not violence in South Africa. While this violent outbreak poses a new set of problems for the refugees, that is not why they are in Bishop Paul’s shelter.Check out my report from April 2006:http://current.com/items/77065052_saving_us_from_a_tyrant
Hey Jaron,
Thanks for your comment. As soon I have a fast connection somewhere here in Kenya, I’ll check out your report.
Yes, I know there where Zimbabweans before in the church, but after the recent violence the number rose substantially, and still keeps rising. Also they definitely are in the church because of the inferior treatment they get in South African society. The recent violence has been smoldering for longer time. Many now even contemplate going back to Zimbabwe, accepting the situation over there. ‘It’s better to die at home than here,’ one of the refugees told. So it’s the same xenophobia in South African that keeps them in the church. So that keeps the story accurate, although with a slight shortcut to keep it understandable for viewers who are new to the subject.
