The look of disgust on your passing face which can hardly be seen echos ‘my’ sentiment as well. While it’s sort of cool because it’s different there are plenty of different things in the world that also don’t actually contribute to the “crude” benefit of man kind like feeding the poor, or stopping a war. Now if the money generated were to go to chairty I’d say bring it on… but that didn’t seem to be the motivation..but then I didn’t read the press. I get all my info from Rocketboom XOXO *70

Is this yet another new shirt or are these two shirts that we have already seen combined as one? Are these all Joanne’s shirts or does Rocketboom have like a huge shirt budget. I know that the journalist is not supposed to become the news, but hasn’t anyone else noticed that Joanne rarely ever wears the same shirt twice or more?

proabably just you…not being sexist, but some women just have a lot of clothes to choose from…women generally love clothes so it isnt that surprising.

I think it’s a money making venture to get people to ride those water taxis. ;)

Pardon me, did you say $15 million???

My 20 minutes of extensive online research has not turned up how much of the money for this thing came from the city, and how much was put up by the Public Art Fund. But I suspect the city’s contribution was not small.

This in a city where all the elevators in the main Bronx courthouse have been broken for a year. People have lost trials by default because they couldn’t climb six flights of stairs. I know at least one woman who had an order of protection expire for the same reason. She came from Mexico City and wonders sometimes if she ever left.

All due respect, this does not appear meant to “wow New Yorkers,” who are notoriously wow-resistant. It is meant to wow tourists, the ones who are expected to drop that $55 million.

I hope the city spends a little of that new money on the people who live there already. But I won’t hold my breath.

Sorry, it’s Friday and I’m being a skeptical buzz-killer. But more and more it seems to me that Bloomberg is running NYC like it was Las Vegas.

Yeah, Times Square used to be a pit, but it was OUR pit. Now it could be sponsored by Applebee’s.

On the other hand: cool waterfalls. And the river looks a lot cleaner than it used to.

I’m a bit surprised by all the excitement over these waterfalls, given that similar things have been done before without garnering so much attention. The first waterfall artwork of this type, as far as I know, was the High Level Bridge waterfall in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, created by artist Peter Lewis in 1980 (only 28 years ago). See the Wikipedia entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Level_Bridge_(Edmonton) or watch a video of it on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZKxyy1nVtA (wait a bit, it takes a while to get started). I guess the obvious difference is that these waterfalls are in New York City, instead of Edmonton.

I think you should have done this entire ep in a pirate costume. Combined with your wobbly sea legs & maybe a few “argh’s” I for one, would have been on the floor in hysterics. It also would have emphasized how silly (& costly) this project appears to me. Certainly just scaffolding with water falling off the top. Compared to Niagra or Angel Falls, this is one of those short, dribbling, drinking fountains that you find in the park.

What have y’all done to your website the the last few days? I’m using IE6/XP (don’t blame me - it’s a work computer) and RB is loading very strangely. The video is larger than usual and the preview picture appears distorted. Then the audio starts to play, even though I haven’t clicked on the play button. When I do click the play button the video never loads - I just get the circling dots.

  24. While there never has been any accounting to taste in regards to the subjectivity of “Art”, this is one expensive tall drink of water. In this time of a stressed economy I should think that the city of NY could have put these funds to far better use. While the idea is novel at best the naked bones of the metal support structure of seem to distract from the concept and the visual beauty of falling water. Is it art? I will leave that to the individual. Perhaps the city can employ a crew to repeatedly assemble and disassemble the structures for all future days while moving them around the river that at the very least would provide jobs in a Dadaist fashion. It could be called “The Dadaist Fashion Fountain Foundation”

The last 2 days the audio is over lapping. Joanne will be speaking and in the back ground there is a delay where everything is repeaded…so there is double audio. Makes it hard to listen to the broadcast.

  26. I would have preferred a huge waterfall spew tons & tons of water from the roof of the UN. Seeing all those welfare-mooching diplomats from dictator-run countries get their Boss suits soaked day after day with sewage water would have been worth the 15 mil. Hey Olarfur, maybe next year?

The vast majority of funds for The Waterfalls is from private sources. Since the artwork is expected to bring in an extra $55 million to the city it would make a profit even if city paid for the whole thing.

What makes a waterfall? I think waterfalls in nature are more inspiring as they are, well natural - they have the power of free-flowing water behind them. Coursing over a cliff-face on undirected by human hands. These things are basically just over-sized garden water-features. :D Might as well opened a couple of fire-hydrants! :D

Actually - I think something more impressive would be water cascading down the Crysler building or something like that. Granted it wouldn’t be very safe for the people beneath the falling water but *shrug* they want art. ;)

While art is certainly an important part of any culture, this just appears to be a huge waste of money. Are these waterfalls solar-powered? Is there any linking the art projects with measures people can take to conserve clean water? To clean up dirty lakes and rivers? To help those millions around the world who have no access to clean water? How about more public art with a purpose…
