Fun show. That was very cool. Do they mine their own gold or ship it over?
yay first poster xD
Please create a custom iPhone webclip icon for users of the iPhone and iPod touch: this would be richly appreciated!
Hi David, thanks for the interest. Rocketboom.com works quite well on the iphone but we do also have an iphone specific locale:
http://www.rocketboom.com/iphone
Hi Drew, if you don’t know what David meant by a Webclip, it’s a reference to an image that the iPhone uses when you put the webpage onto your homescreen, similar to how Favicons work. I made an example webclip for you using the rocketboom logo, and then realised that I can’t upload it into the comments section. If you’d like it, tell me how to get it to you. If not, please responds anyway so that I know you got the message.
ttyl!
We just added full webclip support!
Thanks for pointing this out.
Haha! What timing! The webclip I made had a blue background. Maybe people with iPhones can see how the white looks. Oh! Joanne has an iPhone, how convenient! I like how she uses it as a remote.
Sorry to be spamming the comments… Jamie, I just realised that your webclip icon is 75×75. The required dimensions are 57×57, so either it’s going to scale it in your favour (and the only downside will be the larger file size) or it’ll scale/crop in some undesirable way.
Funny how eps like this attract so few comments.
I love stuff like this. A little tiny window opens and you see people. After that all the sloganeering is simply not the same, it’s much harder to just let the mindless crap let loose by politicians slip past.
I thought the questions were a bit leading. Perhaps the interviewer probed the whole fighting-mother issue before film ran, and they went back to explore it again for the episode.
And I would have liked to see the shop owners address the 2-million-pound elephant looming over the room: How has your life and work been affected by the war?
But what the hell. It’s an afternoon in a corner of Baghdad where the only war, for the moment at least, is between mothers-in-law.
I hope they can sustain that.
Thanks for the glimpse.
One day we’re getting silly and quoting Wallace and Gromit at each other. You can almost see everyone sprawled on the living room furniture, the wine bottle almost empty, people falling over themselves and each other laughing. The next day it’s time to contemplate a slice of civility and hubris in a war zone. I appreciate the mix. Much.
Hey Leron, I’d like to stop and say thank you to you. When your comment came rollin in to my email, I really lit up. I was feeling kinda weird about there being so few comments here today.
Though granted, the episode did not come up until the afternoon, I must say, its been the most intense day of comments so far in fact.
Last weeks LP casual friday episode was featured on the home page of YouTube today and as of now there are over 300 comments on the episode, as well as 126 video comments.
Its been wonderful in the sense that a lot of people really liked it and were so inclined to express something as simple as “Nice.” I also think at least some will be interested in continuing to watch some episodes in the future - welcome to anyone from YouTube today who is just discovering Rocketboom, please chime in if you ever feel up for it, we’d love to have you.
I think a lot people love to watch all their videos on YT which is why we are happy to be there, though in my opinion, the comments here and the relationships allot of us have here (i.e. all you crazy characters who contribute to the conversation, influence the episodes, leave mashups of images and videos - oh the arguments and drunken nights (I wont name any names) - I just mean to say, Leron, thanks for being there.
Back to Iraq, we have been discussing in the office how people around the world are possibly not so interested in the topic anymore (+oil -social issues) imagine how the comments would be if the US just arrived there. I wonder if people are feeling tired and exhausted of even thinking about it?
That totally sucks if its a common attitude because this is possibly the most exciting time to try and help. If people applied their thinking there, perhaps some more progressive activity could ensue.
Drunken nights? Whatever do you mean? Heh.
In my opinion, Iraq has slipped from the front page and front of mind, in this country at least, for two reasons. First, a remarkably small percentage of people are directly affected. If you’re not in the military or loving someone who is, you can pretend it’s not happening. Just shop as usual. The sacrifices made by people who are in the shit-grinder are simply not part of day-to-day reality for hundreds of millions.
Second, the “surge” has brought at least the illusion of order. The number of people being blown up, U.S. and Iraqi both, is down. Just goes to shgow what an idiot Rumsfeld was.
And it will be a little while at least — say, January 2009 or so, before the bankruptcy of the current situation in Iraq becomes obvious. There is zero political progress being made. The minute there isn’t a platoon on every block, the partisans will pick up right where they left off. That leaves us with two horrible options: stay forever or withdraw and watch the lid blow off.
It’s like the old joke Steve McQueen tells in “The Magnificent Seven:” A guy falls out of a 10 story window and on each he passes, people hear him say, “So far so good.” Too bad for that ugly bit at the bottom. Bush doesn’t carew as long as “the bottom” comes after 1/20/09. None of the presidential candidates has really addressed this either, the GOP White Dudes because they are content with the myth that “the surge is working,” the Dems because they can’t bring themselves to admit that there is no good way out of this rat maze.
Gah, not I’m feeling fatigued too. C-C, pass that plunger over here.
Sniff; I think I need a tissue after reading Drew’s reply above.
I just got in. Got to trade the PC job for a plumbing emergency at a neighbour’s place today. Now I understand why plumber’s charge so much.
I have to ditto Leron’s comments; I like the mix and this was a nice peak at something else, going on somewhere else, right in the middle of a war. One has to wonder though, where they get the money to buy as much and as often as the shopkeeper said.
I’m late, I’m late! but I just spent the day playing tour guide for C-C’s cuz & just got back.
My girlfriend loved this ep, anything with gold & jewels in it, she’s riveted. I liked it because of the people & their skills, great presentation also.
Now about Fridays LP Album ep on YT
There’s 113,504 views & 361 comments. I read most of them & was pleased to see that most were complimentary but this one that made me laugh…
“This video is like shoving your head into liquid wax.” like this doofus has actually done that very thing!
Anyway guys, congrats on the exposure but I must say I prefer the more intimate comment repartee here @ RB rather than on YT.

Hey I think the end of this video is cut off.
iraq, lol
Thanks for posting this intimate portrait of everyday life in Iraq. Over the past five years there has been precious little coverage of ordinary Iraqis and Afghans talking about their lives and how they have been affected by the invasions. It’s always US or British officers going on about their latest ‘advances’. I agree with Leron, it would have been interesting to hear how the ‘war’ has impacted on this jeweller. What people tend to forget about war zones is that life goes on…people fall in love, get married, go to work etc, despite all the horrors going on around them. I would love to see something from Afghanistan if possible. Thanks for your efforts, much appreciated.
GOLD GIMME
Yeah the video cut out for me too - at the part where the goldsmith is talking about ‘nice things’ occuring between mothers of couples.
