  1. Many of you wish you had a B-man-B-Gone remote, don’t you?
My fondest dream for 2008? Joanne telling me face-to-face:”You’ve been a naughty boy!”

Can the IR ports on the TVs at the show be covered? to prevent this if they must? Kinda silly i\’d say (the \”this is horrible reactions\”)

  3. Demure devilish deviant, oh so dewy!

    Hey I think that a new-media channel-changer may-might-can-should have been more cutting-edge appropriate than a power-off button.

You will be waving while riding down Broadway upon the shoulders of supporters soon, I\’m sure!

    P.S.: It was funny!

Looking like a character from Oliver Twist, Richard only needed Joanne’s mittens to complete his haute couture ensemble.
Turning off a few TV’s, a true “techno-prank” of new age hooliganism. If I only had one @ the Macworld Keynote!

So that’s where my kafia went.

I haven’t worn it since 1986, when I decided it made me look like a self-important dweeb.

I think Richard has mistaken momentary notoriety for impact. Kinda like a streaker at an NFL game. After a minute he gets hustled off the field and the game goes on.

I think this whole episode will have the same lasting impact as the “don’t tase me bro” incident had on serious discussions of police training issues.

The prank was funny. Making more out of it is silly, on all sides.

Was that a precautionary move interviewing him out in the park as opposed to inside the Rocketboom secret lair?! He may have zapped the RB server or worse; zapped Ellie!

Over the years I have exhibited at several trade shows, often using TVs (anybody out there old enough to remember those big CRT types?!) and would not have been too amused by some geek toying with a remote. “I only did it during the boring parts”; who the Hell is he to decide what part of a presentation is boring? Those people paid good money to be there and hawk their wares. “It was funny”; huh? A foot up his @ss on the way out the door is funny. It’s bad enough speaking in front of large groups without having to alter your script adhoc making excuses because some anonymous moron is goofing with your show for fun. What he did was a pathetic grab for 15 minutes of the spotlight - and RB just gave him 3 more. Granted the initial reactions and outcries were extreme but I do hope CES organizers don’t let this go. I can’t say what my suggestion would be; I’ll let cooler heads prevail.

    Peace out.

    1. It was funny. He probably thought it was funny.
It wasn’t so funny for the person presenting.
So what was learned? He probably won’t do it at the next major event, that he isn’t blacklisted from. ;)

      PS. Gizmodo rocks.

Don’t get me wrong; I like delivering or watching a good prank just as much as the next guy but, funny or not, there is still a time and a place for everything. What ever happened to respect and professionalism?

  11. Totally Agree with C-C\’s first.

I say that if a prank is to be done At All, it should be done Very Well.

It is a good point Giz made about many journalists being nothing more than lackeys with keyboards ( http://gizmodo.com/344447/giz-banned-for-life-and-loving-it-on-pranks-and-civil-disobedience-at-ces?cpage=4#viewcomments ). -But it has No-Thing to do with their prank.

**To be done well, a prank should have at least some MerryPrankster-ish type of all the following: message, exclusivity, purpose, high technical difficulty, planning, engineering, rules, restraint, targeted focus with ~0 collateral damage, a certain amount of respect, relative harmlessness, and high creative flair.

For example, hijacking a Microsoft presentation for its new OS by interspersing something like the ^^^ images of Big Brother with Bill Gates\’s face instead and overlaid silly comments, etc. -THAT would be clever. Or as someone else noted, jacking The Steve\’s presentation at MacWorld; even for a few 1/2 second subconscious blips.

I realize Giz staff are just geeks who write, but they need to refine their technique.

Otherwise as in the CES spot (for which they rightly deserve at least 1 smack), giz comes off more like the dipshit 18th sequel to \”American Pie\” instead of the Mad Geniuses behind the original \”Animal House\”.

(and giving Blakely an interview is like giving Jerry Springer a TV show)
