Interesting report. It’s more evidence of the limitations of print journalism for photographers.

A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids’ room, the father said,”Take the kids and get out of the house. We’ll call the police, we don’t have a clown statue.” The “clown statue” is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don’t post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand(SORRY BOUT BUT THIS REALLY FREAKS ME OUT)

Miss Colan is very pretty. Oh yeah, Mediastorm is a breath of fresh air. Yes, you can scrutinize the photog or writer for lack of action on behalf of the druggie, Katrina victim, or Marine, but they convey reality that otherwise would have never been exposed. Even Rocketboom is kinda goofy but it again is interesting and palatable compared to the swill that’s forced down our throat daily by the main stream media.

  8. B-man, it’s Kam in Hawaii I’m be thinking about:

“Amateur satellite watcher Ted Molczan notes that a “Notice to Airmen” (NOTAM) has been issued announcing restricted airspace for February 21, between 02:30 and 05:00 UTC, in a region near Hawaii. Stricken satellite USA 193, which the US has announced plans to shoot down, will pass over this area at about 03:30. Interestingly, this is during the totality of Wednesday’s lunar eclipse, which may or may not make debris easier to observe.”

Don’t worry about Kam. He’s probably offshore somewhere surfing on the “…swells in the Pacific Ocean west of Hawaii running slightly higher than Navy would like” area! Quote from B-man’s link.

Seriously, am I the only one here with incredibly bad download rates from RB? Yesterday 30KB/s, today… 11,9KB/s! It is the same for HD as well as the regular Quicktime file.

    1. Nope.
Me too. I even emailed Jeff and Brian S. at Dreamhost with a few Traceroutes and everything.

      1st Jeff said:
“Hrmm…does seem slow. I took a look at the server, and load seems
minimal…I can only imagine some sort of networking issue. Globix,
maybe? Would you be able to send me a Traceroute from your location, so
I can see if there’s a connection problem? If you need help with this,
      please see http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Traceroute

      Then Brian said:
“I could not replicate this behavior. Your site loads fine in my browser.
Im actually working remotely today and ran a trace from my machine. There
weren’t any timeouts at the GBLX router. That warning that was reported (
Missing reverse DNS entry ) simply means that the IP does not resolve to
a hostname. It’s pretty much a benign warning.”

-Then, of course the behavior replicates itself ?yesterday? or something. :)

Why there are 7 hops from me to DH (nnj to ca) and the .mov loads slow, but 17 from me to datagram (nnj to nyc) with rocketboom.net in the stat-bar forever, I have no idea. -There do seem to be a Lot of unnecessary hops at ntt.net (9). theplanet.com is lightning fast as usual.

Who knows. -Maybe it’s ntt or Global X-ing’s router? …Best of luck 2u; hope they resolve it soon.

Hm. I just realized something; you guys are using youtube as your player instead of blip, was it? Is there any particular reason, I hear their revenue share isn’t as good, but is there any other reason this is better than that?

Reminds me a bit of the old joke: A news photgrapher bumps into a reporter at a diner. “Hey,” says the fotog, I just saw a homeless guy with no legs begging for money in the street.” The reporter says, “Oh yeah, what did you give him?” The fotog replies: “A 125th at 3.5.”

There’s nothing wrong with “really amazing pictures,” per se. But I worry when I see Mr. Storm toss off the CFR in the same breath as National Geo. They do not have equivalent stories to tell. And we have to be careful not to gloss up stuff that needs to be looked at in the hard light of day. Art does not live in its own world.

Case in point: That photo of the soldier with the cigarette dangling in B-movie perfection from his lip (who has come to be known as the Marlboro Marine). The picture has been widely circulated as a symbol of U.S. heroism in Iraq. The soldier, meanwhile, is back home, and less well-known are his current struggles with PTSD. He’s now a divorced biker living in a trailer behind his dad’s house.

Is it wrong to tout the picture? No. It’s a hell of a shot. But careful how you use powerful symbols, please. And in the words of Joe Strummer, “Watch who you work for.”

I should have said explicitly: the Marlboro Marine piece on the Media Storm site is outstanding. As is much of their content. Rich, deep, a fine example of how the new media can move past simple symbolism.

Was Wednesday a holiday I wasn’t aware of? Did I sleep in and miss a day of my life? What happened to Wednesday’s show? How about Thursday’s show? Remember a few days back? I paraphrase the great Baron von Andrew: “… new servers, new doohickey, new thing-a-ma-bobber, and RB will be back on track posting at 9:00am as usual…” OK!

Hmmm, maybe that ransom note should be taken more seriously.

CC baby, it was a full moon, and the RB rocket had to smash up that spy satellite. Donald Trump let me watch the whole thing with his BIG telescope.
