Yeah Ellie! Great interview. I had to watch it twice to catch a few things said by Don & the 2 sisters. I’m sorry, but if you are watching TV, on your computer and have your Crackberry next to you, well you might be multi-tasking or have a rewired brain but, call me old fashioned, I think you (not specifically Ellie) need to get out with some realfriends; ones you can poke in the eye not poke on Facebook or whatever. As Don said, this next generation has unrealistic expectations - what, just because you know how to IM someone? Personally I’m stuck in one of those lost generations that sits between 2 others; not anymore a Boomer but not quite a Gen X’er. I think old school and new school and struggle to adopt either. I believe traditions should be upheld yet I watch RB and work online all day but without being on Twitter, FB, MySpace etc. Whoa! Maybe I have another problem. Did the older sister say she got her cell phone when she was SIX?!? What the heck were her parents thinking? Nobody needs a cell (phone) at age 6. She needs some books, some toys, an assortment of games and some friends to play outside with or she’ll end up like the humans did on the space station in Wall-E.

@ Sarah Austin: if you’re reading, I thought this one had good video!! ;)

Hey yes, time marches onward. Someone older once told me about a time when the older generation would ask the kids to help them set the blinking clock on the VCR. Those kids would then have to hit ’stop’ on their Walkman cassette player for a moment to concentrate better on the task.

And the generation of today will, no doubt, be asking their kids tomorrow how to operate the stuff of the future blah, blah. The human brain reaches a point somewhere in life where the new stuff isn’t as important anymore. When young, everything new is of paramount interest. Again, someone older told me that, I still have to find out for myself.

By the way, can anyone help me with my new flat-bed scanner? I can’t get the darned thing to turn on. I’d appreciate it.

P.S.: A side note: This Crackle player is annoying as it will only give me about 3 seconds to decide to replay before it launches into the Central Park Hangman show. I’ve seen that show. Several times now, thank you.

You have a scanner on your bed? Cool! We have a queen size bed. Will that scanner thingy fit?

Ditto on your Crackle auto play feature. HOW THE HELL DO YOU TURN IT OFF?? It streams & buffers nicely this week but the auto-play is NOT interesting but of course a great way to boost view stats.

    2. Hey Mike, there’s a teeny-weeny button on your browser called a refresh button. Click on it to replay or view same RB page anytime you wish.

Interesting show. I never thought of generational differences in terms of rewired brains or differently wired brains. Makes complete sense. At last, a scientific explanation of why most of today’s pop music sounds the same.

Cell Phone at 6 ?? I agree with C-C on this one. That kid needs anything OTHER than a cell phone or more computer games.

Funny thing is that at age 40, I still don’t have a cell phone and quite frankly, I don’t want one either. To me, a quite ride home in my car (or with my book on CD playing) gives me a chance to decompress. I can’t imagine going at it 100% all day, then spending the next 25 minutes on my cell phone too.

As for texting? To me, a phonecall or E-mail is SOOO much better becuase I don’t care that my friend just stubbed his toe or that his dog wants to go for a walk.

Sigh.. I must be getting old… real old

    Happy Wednesday everyone.

Thats a bigger deal than multi-tasking. Actually though, when you think about it, theres probably not enough said about the differences and the pros and cons of single focus vs. multitasking. Or else Sonomadave just hasn’t stumbled upon it.

Thanks so much for your work….you are the best (next to you know who).

Ahhhhh, isn’t it refreshing when the adults are in charge? Look at all those cool comments up there.

First: We’re GOING to see conflict over technology in the workplace? Perhaps Mr. Tapscott needs to visit a few more workplaces. The wars are already raging. I know a bunch of companies trying to make the jump to the web that are being beaten to death from within by managers who simply do not understand what they are dealing with.

Second: Hate to burst your bubble, but I don’t think the age correlation is as airtight as all that. I know a bunch of folks in my demo who navigate the web without a hitch. Even oldsters (and you know who I mean, though I won’t call you out) can surf with thebest of them. And I know 20-somethings who couldn’t sign up for an RSS feed at gunpoint. Younger people may have grown up inundated with stuff us old folks had to seek out in order to learn, but seek it out we did. Meanwhile, clueless CEOs in their 30s are extending their general cluelessness to the web, just like they muck up everything else.

Third: I want to see some evidence, as in scientific data, that points to a systematic rewiring of the human brain due to early-onset exposure to computer-based tasks or multi-tasking. I am skeptical to say the least.

There is, for example, credible evidence that a child who grows up in a two-way bilingual setting, actively learning in English and Spanish until adulthood for example, arrives at age 21 with a brain that is different from the norm. Hook those two-language folks up to an EEG and the screen lights up in ways brain surgeons never imagined 15 years ago.

Is there really similar evidence regarding kids who grew up googling and texting? Please point me at it, because I have never seen it. There has, onthe other hand, been a tremendous spate of BS about “brain-based learning” and the like for about the past decade, most of it based on silly science and wishful thinking. One academic wag I know likens brain-based learning with kidney-based learning: You have to take breaks to pee, after all.

    Lastly: Damn, no banjo solo?

    1. Leron, if you check out the archive section on the brain podcast link
I posted there are a few shows which speak about neuroplasticity.
It’s the latest and hottest research area in brain science. Before, conventional thinking was that the brain’s wiring was set at a certain age (or certain set points).

They now have proof that the brain can be re-wired at any age. Extrapolating from recent findings (past 10 years) in neuroplasticity I can see how today’s multi-tasking children and teens must have brains that are wired in ways never before seen. Of course, there will be those whose brains reflect high dose ecstasy & rave indulgences… who can’t seem to boil an egg.

Also, here’s an interesting talk given to Google Brat Employees on how meditation physically affects the brain by renowned scientist, author, and meditation teacher Dr. Jon Kabat Zinn. He gets into the scientific evidence at the 40 minute mark.
I suggest you skip ahead and watch from there.

      3. The question is not “can they rewire their brains?” the question is,

“Are they willing to put in the effort to do that?

        Complacency is easy.

    Nice job Ellie.
When I was 6 the phone I got to use was in a big red pill box down on the corner & walking there I would get hung up checking hedges for bird nests, or what was the content of the dog shit I stepped in, or why Jack Frost made such beautiful patterns on the glass.
Go back & interview Don on his great collection of electric guitars (which, unfortunately for most of the little buggers watching, they would have to take an actual music lesson to learn how to play) just because you wield an air guitar, don’t make you a musician!

My local mom-and-pop guitar store had a used Flying V on the wall for the past year. It looked just like the one Hendrix played at Isle of Wight, except the pickups were a little different. Once a week or so I’d drop by, buy a soda from the machine, compare gossip with the guys behind the counter and tickle that honey’s its sweet little neck as best I could. Alas, they actually (sniff) sold it about a month ago, for $900, which was a screaming good deal, I thought, though about $890 more than I could have offered. They still have quite a few very nice axes hanging on the wall but it’s just not the same.

      1. I’ve always wondered what Hendrix would have done with the synthesizer guitar.
The only 2 musicians I know who ever explored its kinetic musical energy were John McLaughlin & Pat Metheny, but I know in my heart of hearts Jimi would have created whole new galaxies of sound that reach far beyond what even the Hubble telescope can see.

This whole topic severely annoys me. I will say it whether anyone likes it or not. Rocketboom’s interviews on intellectual topics lack SERIOUS rigor. Do it right or don’t do it at all. I’m not going to nod my head up and down like an ass just because some old dude tells me he spent two years on a study. Time, although it can be, is not a determining factor on quality. All the youth presented in these videos look affluent. Interview some poor kids and see what they have.
