74 Comments on Life? on Mars?

That’s a fancy intro there! It’ll be interesting to hear what information is being withheld. Maybe they’re just doing it to promote interest in space exploration, and all they actually found was a sweet heart-shaped rock.

For the past month or so, I’ve been having technical issues with Rocketboom. Going to the default video page, I typically get both the YouTube version as well as a wmv version that downloads in the background. If I wait long enough, it starts to play, and I can hear it but not see it. I’m using the latest version of IE6.

  3. Big Press release today about Rocketboom:

They almost titled it “Beyond Mars” but in the end everyone decided to stick with something more specific:

Sadly, there are two fairly obvious reasons for all the secrecy:

1 - The Boosh administration is trying to figure out how to make the most political hay out of this. How can they leverage this fact to their greatest advantage? Keep in mind these are the people who routinely twist science to suit their political agenda, on everything from climate change to literacy acquisition to reproductive health. Finding the right spin on the Mars discovery is just what they do. And as always, they do it behind closed doors.

2 - The same feckless thugs also realize that this will blow the minds of their core constituents: We’re talking the 27 percent of the country that still thinks Bush is doing a good job as president. Most of them believe God speaks to Bush directly and that Obama is an anti-American elitist who was sworn into the Senate on a Koran. A headline like “LIFE ON MARS” could shake them up a dozen different ways. Best to have all one’s ducks in a row, all the cable TV preachers and radio talkers and Fox pundits wired into the talking points, before the big announcement, so the faithful don’t skip voting to stay home praying to the New Martian Overlords for deliverance.

Think I’m exaggerating? Go back a couple days and watch that Jesus Camp video clip. You could make those people do damn near anything, unless something came along and frightened them so badly that they couldn’t process your message for a little while. Something like, say, the first-ever confirmation of life on another planet. The GOPers know they’;re going to need every lunatic to vote their way if they want to take down Obama.

God, what a world. When’s the next Mars shuttle?

    1. I think the “Life on Mars” issue is quite a delicate matter. Afterall, it would upset the applecarts of many world religions. Remember the news story that broke from the vatican about 2 months ago? They claimed they would have NO PROBLEM if extraterrestrial life were found in other parts of the universe. (That’s a pretty HUGE PRONOUNCEMENT given the religious scare tactics employed by the Church over the millennia) When I read that report, I knew then we were being set up for something big, which just might be the coming announcement. I don’t think there is a political agenda involved as much as a control agenda. A study done in the 50s by some think tank whose name escapes me at the moment claimed “pandemonium” would ensue if it were revealed ETs exist.

Here’s to pandemonium :) And condominiums (they have to live somewhere)

  7. -Ok RB, I pulled a few strings with my buddies working in sigint for the DIA and the NGIA.

According to them, this is ~more or less~ what the rover found:

The DIA guys were specifically concerned about ~’not knowing how to defuse an “Explosive Space Modulator”‘-or somesuch, but I think they were purposefully vague. Oh, well…

  13. Mars secret? not likely anything earth shaking. Might just be the finding of perchlorate on Mars soil which is not conducive to organic life. Likely also not as much a secret as not enough information to make conclusions. Best to get as much data as possible.

I’d like to think of this with Christopher Columbus. They thought there was Europe and ONLY Europe. Just like (MOST OF US- I AM NOT TRYING TO OFFEND!!!!) we think there is only life on Earth and ONLY Earth. I am sure there is life out there… maybe not the creepy big eye ones like we see in movies, probably bacteria. Once again YouTube Comments can have opinions… This is mine.

Why is it anytime someone mentions life that does not reside on Earth, even molecular life, everyone starts calling that person crazy? Even scientists, credible people, think that person is crazy for believing such things.

Are we really that closed minded? Is it really that much of a stretch to think that somewhere, even close by, something is forming that could become life? It happened here, so why not there? Besides, we’re not talking full fledged aliens, just small bits of matter.

I think we are in our “the earth is flat” phase as far as mars goes. In 100 years people will look back at us and say , dam they didn’t even know there was life on mars at one time? Just like we look back and wonder how people could have believed the earth was flat , and the scrutiny people faced for saying it was not flat but round.

i think religion has made our population really closed minded
so when we come up with actual evidence people tend to question the evidence as fake or not believe it at all

i believe that religion controls the mind and doesnt allow the mind to really examine life as it really is

    just my opinion

If Bruce Willis can do the impossible and Arnold can live on Mars, and be on Earth as the governor of California, Arnold has shipped the small population of aliens which came from Mars and Mexico to MANY states such as California, Massachusetts and others. The aliens will soon appropiate and take over. Thanks Bruce and Arnold.

Actually, a Very high percentage of oxygen is in gas form, just not in a form humans could use it, plants could. Mars is made up of 95.72% of Carbon Dioxide. But to your point of there being oxygen, you are quite correct.

  55. GuitarSnipper

Because there is Carbon Dioxide it should prove there was life on Mars as Carbon is what was at one time something that was alive. You get Carbon Dioxide from burning wood or fossel fuels. Cardon Dioxide is what we exhale after Oxygen is mixed with organic waste in the blood that we used as energy to move or grow ect,(to keep it simple)as do other animals.

Carbon is also created in vast quantities during the normal lifespan of a star, out of nuclear fusion processes.
It was here long before life ever existed.
