Went to see a lecture by Brian Cox last night here in Dublin. He’s one of the main honcho mahunchas at the CERN particle accelerator thingy in Switzerland. I asked him about the court order to stop them carrying out their experiments and he blew it off as some crackpots looking for their 15 mins of fame. He was then asked by someone else as to the possibility of the project creating black holes. To which he claims he is almost nearly certain black holes won’t occur. Hmmm… But in fairness to him he is a professor of particle physics and I was just someone with a question. I think we’ll be ok. Almost nearly certain…

As far as “looking into” physics experiments - I think that is why we have, err, physicists? I wouldn’t attempt to try to calculate the probability that a black hole will develop from an experiment on nuclear fusion based on, say, the number of polar bears on fake icebergs in Al Gore’s “Inconvenient Truth”?
