How sad that a school is newsworthy because it seeks to engage students, to get them to reflect on who they are, and to make them feel bad when they miss a day.

I have sat through many, many high school classes, at schools all across the country, that have bored me to tears. And from the back of the room it’s been clear I was not alone.

It’s torture to watch schools, including this one, die by the inches because there is no money. How many minutes of the Iraq war would it take to fund this school from nose to tail for a year?

Sad? Come come… The school is newsworthy as it is attempting to provide a program that motivates the students. And yes many high school classes are quite boring which is because of both the curriculum that is geared to objective goals (city, county, state, federal) and unfortunately the aging and incompetence and inability to relate to students teachers.

I was a High School Mathematics teacher until I was 25. Although there are many older motivatiing teachers I am all for weeding out those that aren’t.
Another possibility is having more motivating college graduates spend several years in the school system to provide youthful energy.

As far as War and Education - you are right but I am sure you are not in favor of a revolution to change that ratio. Our current society is not oriented to a equitable and reasonable distribution of wealth.

      1. I think what Leron really means is that all schools should be closer to this one, so it’s sad that this one school is such a different place that it’s newsworthy. If all schools were this neat, no one would be reporting on a particular school because there’d be nothing particularly amazing about it.

Uhmmm Newsworthy - well it is in NYC and that is RB’s turf. New York City because of it’s size has always had special High Schools such as Music and Art, Bronx High School of Science, High School of Performing Arts, Brooklyn Tech and more.

Unfortunately once you leave high population areas you don’t have the desire or money to foster such such schools. Of course there are regional schools but not quite the same as local schools. I’m sure (I would hope) that other high population cities - Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco would have similar secondary schools.

Ability of large cities to support and sustain their population is more reason for the suburbs to start folding into the cities. The vertical warrens of cities are the only way to have an environmental future. And it ain’t just for special schools.

  5. Great story that demonstrates well why education budget cuts S-U-C-K!!

I’m a little jealous of how cool that school is.

Hopefully those kids will grow up to be as good as this guy: http://www.rocketboom.com/vlog/rb_08_mar_28/quicktime

  6. Reminds me of the school I attended in Frammingham, MA.

As a rebellious youth going in the wrong direction, more freedom motivated me to pursue positive ideas. We treat students as prisoners to educational authority. Naturally, students will want to escape. We need more schools that teach individuals to think for themselves and process information in an effective way.

  8. This report is amazing. It’s always good to see kids realising their talent and places that facilitate that. The cuts are going to be tough for alot of schools and it’s unfortunate that it’s the rootsiest that get hit the hardest.

  9. great story. I would’ve loved to have been at a highschool like this when I was growing up.

side note - this is probably one of my favorite RB’s because of the camera work/editing/titling. Kudos to whoever shot and cut it.

keep more of this type of work coming.
