How do we repair the US image among Muslims??

By telling them to go to hell.

I think that about says it.

If we let any one of these guys win the 2008 election, we’re even more craven and deserving of bad karma than I thought.

My god, you’re right. The fact that there are wacko Muslims, and that some of them even hold state power, gives us the right to do anything we want, to anyone who claims the same faith.

And it means there’s no point at all in trying to constructively engage anyone. Just send in the troops. It’s working so well, after all.

Did you see the other youtube question where the dude held up the Bible and demanded to know whether each of the GOP wannabes believes it is the literal word of God? Did you hear the answers?

Or the guy firing an auto rifle into a hillside and caressing his beloved shotgun?

There’s not as much difference between “us” and “them” as we sometimes like to think.

      2. The “us” you are referring to don’t go stoning our women, especially with the bloodthirsty lust of wanting them to be put to death because they named a Teddy “Jesus”. Nor do they strap on suicide belts and blow up people indiscriminately…they don’t make their woman walk around in a black potato sacks …yes, there is a difference between us…sorry you’re blind to the fact.

Going into Iraq was stupid…but I will never condone radical Islam and Sharia law. Never. I’d rather die first then submit to being called a pig and monkey…and Leron you too are nothing to them…read the Koran and the Hadith…you are an infidel, nothing more. The Imams and other Muslim religious leaders consider you vermin…(perhaps you don’t know it yet)

When muslims start reforming their own religion, when the so-called “moderates” take responsibilty for the atrocities of their brethern and their communities perhaps there might be some hope. As far as the jokers on YouTube, they are just that…jokers…all of them…Republican & Democrats. Imbeciles.

Did you read the article I posted….what say you?

Oh, they are just “wacko muslims”…well, tell that to the school teacher and her parents and friends. All she ever wanted to do was make a difference, unlike the muslims in the country where she was working….

Spent much time in the South? It was only fifty years ago that a black man could be killed for simply showing his face in town after sunset, and the cops would giggle and kick his body as they sauntered past. You think those crackers treated their women any better? You think they all left or died off, and didn’t pass that bullshit along to the next generation?

Been to an abortion clinic recently and had a heart-to-heart with any of the loving Christians targeting doctors for death? Or maybe talked to anyone who’s had a female relative killed or maimed by a back-alley abortion? Not a clitorectormy, true, but the result has often been the same, and the sentiment that made it happen sure is. We’ll be lucky if abortion remains legal in this country. In a lot of it, regardless of the law, you can’t find a doctor willing to do one, for fear of ending up like Barnett Slepian. Or the victims of Eric Rudolph, whose skill with a nail-packed bomb is surely the envy of many a jihadist.

For that matter, talked to a high school biology teacher anywhere in this country lately about the joys of teaching evolution? A friend of mine in a nice Northern city found a dead cat gutted on the hood of his car recently, for daring to suggest to our own stripe of jihadis that the Earth is more than 6,000 years old. He’s a nervous type and this pushed him over some kind of edge. He’s taking a lot of pills but they don’t seem to help any more. He wishes he had just never opened his mouth.

You and I could go around on this forever, I know, and frankly I have no interest in dragging this out any further. So if you want the last word, you go on ahead.

But let me leave you with two thoughts.

1 - Do not, under any circumstances, assume that I condone the evil crap done in the name of Allah, or for that matter, that I don’t understand “them.” You’re selling me short, which I think makes it easier for you to believe that you possess a handle on the truth and I just don’t get it. So much easier than principled disagreement. And so much more likely to be bullshit.

2 - The point I was making, before you saw the M word and teed off, was that we have an obligation to “take responsibility for the atrocities of our brethren” and keep these dangerous GOP fucks from replacing the dangerous GOP fuck currently leading our country. The GOP has blundered horribly and made things much worse, and breathed new life into the extremism that you decry.

You can wait for “them” to “reform their own religion.” Pack a lunch, it might be a while.

Meanwhile, I’m hoping people get off their asses in THIS country and start tipping things back toward the path from which we use science and intellect, instead of brainless swagger, to navigate the world.

Leron, I know you don’t condone the evil perpertrated by extremists muslims, and I’m not selling you short, as your posts over the years have shown us your wisdom and impeccable ability to express your thoughts. What threw me for a loop was your statement “How do we repair the US image among Muslims??”
And again the latest statement: You can wait for “them” to “reform their own religion.” Pack a lunch, it might be a while.”

If the muslims don’t reform their own religion and allow Jihadi extremists to continue their ways, who will?
It’s like telling a wife-beater to continue doing what he’s doing, perhaps eventually, his wife will build up a tolerance for broken ribs, bruised flesh and black eyes.

Come on. I know you are bright and intelligent which is why I wrote what I did. Also, stop mixing in thngs about USA 50 years ago. We’ve come a long way since then, even though a lot of shit still goes down. But muslim haven’t done much in that last 800 years as stonings, gay bashing, fatwas (Salmon Rushdie–the muder of the Dutch cartoonist, etc. etc. The lawsuits by CAIR which are eroding American freedoms) all still continues in 2008. Please…they, like the wife beater need to take responsibility for their actions. I was disgusted by the school teacher story. Thousands running around with swords saying put a bullet in her head…some religion of Peace.

Who rammed jet aircraft into the Trade Towers? It wasn’t the Scandiniavians, British, Irish, Swedes, French, Mexicans, Spanish, Catholics, Buddhists, Scientologists or Rosocrusians….No it was…ONE GROUP…muslims!!! Did that justify going into Iraq? NO! Bush is a dumb fuck.

And it may sound that at times I’m attacking you, but that is not my intention. Perhaps I should reread my posts before I post to remove any invective on my part.

I love your contributions to RB. I apologize if I don’t come across in a respectful manner. Oftentimes, I’m not responding to you directly, but to the other RBers who are not so well informed. It seems there’s a very young crowd out there. When I read if it wasn’t for RB I wouldn’t have know about the debate and its issues, I get very worried.

It is so frightening to see what the media wants to many of our “fellow” Americans to believe in. This debate presented a refreshing representation of what most of America believes. Do you know that 82% of us are Christian?

I didn’t like Andrew’s little editorial at the end. Our country has so many more important issues to deal with other than gays in the military or abortion. What about the ever increasing taxation or loss of liberty that we incur from Washington? To me that is much more important.

Thanks Andrew for waking me up to try to find the video of last night’s debate.

Taking responses completely out of context and creating phony questions that never happened, this video had about as much to do with the actual reality of the Republican debate as Harry Potter does with the reality of school life in England. Given that there is already a great deal of misinformation out there for young people, and that many who saw this did not watch the actual debate, I’m disappointed that Rocketboom would air this as if it were real. Note, I don’t plan to vote for any of the Republicans, but at least people should be making an educated choice.

    1. bdw, thanks for commenting. I think your characterization is more extreme than the reality. Much like a political cartoon, this video was edited to illuminate these 8 characters in an extreme and hopefully insightful way towards their actual, obviously outstanding characteristics.

For instance, the candidates answers to “how to regain world respect” were in fact about winning the war and proving that the US is great. Thats crazy but thats what they were saying!

Also, Mccain said “my friends” more than you would want to count without a transcript.

What is an example of a case in the video that you saw which exemplifies the extremity that you speak of?

Whenever you are questioned by a citizen (potential voter), you have 3 simple choices
    -tell the true
    -tell nothing
-tell “whatever he/she wants to hear”
Never take option one, not even in front of the god/demon of your choice.
Second choice is the all around second best choice. Example:
-voter: when the war is gonna end?
-candidate: if there is a god in heaven and a president in the white house and a pope in rome, my answer would be, let us pray

  23. Although the whole clip was rather sickening for me to watch, I should metion how surprised I was to hear that according to one of those candidates (they’re all the same to me), the united states cannot afford a space program. Like, ugh, I don’t even want to get into it. It’s just a stupid unbacked claim (Yes, just like my claim).

B-man, I think you, like most americans, are currently too far removed from teh middle east to have a reasonable view of what life is like there. I don’t know for sure how many muslims think of everyone else as vermin, but the same problems exist here. Take people who believe in abortion, birth control, and gay rights and ask them how accomodating they feel americans are. Looking at how well the average american lives compared to those in 2nd and 3rd world countries, it’s surprising how much aggression they still have.

If you think about what the USA could have done with all the money they spent on Iraq and all the tension they have created in the world so quicly, I think it’s quite obvious that they could and should have done other things. With the money they had, they could have gone a long way to controlling hte spread of aids in Africa, or they could have provided infrastructure such as fresh water to most developing nations of the world, allowing the people to adjust their effort from trying to survive to actually being productive and self-sustaining. The world could have seen a massive turnaround with the amount of money they’ve spent so far, but alas it’s more exciting news to drop a bomb than to dig a latrine pit.

I wish Bill Clinton was still in office. It’s a shame that his personal life ruined his career, because he was actually on the way to doing good things for the world.

    Few muslims back suicide bombings

    10% of pakistanis = 16.5 million people
    20% of bangldeshis = 30 million
    30% of Lebanese = 1 million
    20% of jordanians = 1 million
    10% of indonesians = 23.5 million
    40% of nigerians = 54 million
    15% of turks = 10 million
    70% of Palestinians = 3 million

total = 139 million Muslims support suicide bombing…and that’s just in the countries polled

Yup, no need to reform Islam…

“139 million Muslims support suicide bombing”

I would bet it’s worse than that. I never hear any muslim complaining about suicide bombers, or what the muslims call “holy martyrs”. There is no question about Islam being a dangerous and insane religion. Of course all religions are insane. The christians and jews are a big part of the problem. All religious people are childish. They believe they have an invisible friend. Because they all have different invisible friends, there have been centuries of religious violence. I’m sick of religious stupidity. People should grow up and stop acting like idiots. The world needs to rid itself of all gods and all religions, and the sooner the better.

  26. How amazingly differentiated their views are!

We recently had elections over here in Switzerland. Unfortunately a quite extremist party won, but due to the coalition character of our government that’s not a huge problem. They have ‘only’ 28% of the mandates in parliament. Also, Switzerland doesn’t play a very important role in the world.

What frightens me when I see these republican candidates talking is that one of them could become the president of the most powerful nation in the world.

I don’t know whether democratic candidates are better or not, but I know for sure I wouldn’t vote for these republican guys….

But then a manned space program could become an entire new meaning when it could be used to get rid off political opponents. Great thinking, hands down!

Boy you sure chopped up the answers to those questions. Yasmin, the first questioner is from my home town. In the local paper she replied that Giuliani’s answer was satisfactory –especially the part where he says we should not confuse average “Muslims” with radical Islamic terrorists. I noticed you left out that part of his response. Huckabee said he would support the space program-you left that part out. It’s easy to make fun of anyone if you take things out of context, delete the parts you don’t like to support your agenda. Yes, the debates so far are not remembered for dissertations on policy as much as sound bites, but that is the sad state of the “debate” process on television. Most people see through partisan attempts to make fun of people who are putting themselves up for political office and for exposing themselves to potential ridicule by opposing groups. They all deserve a certain measure of respect for that even if you support another candidate. Your video today…well, a pretty lame attempt to push your agenda.

    Reply
    1. Dean, you cited two examples. In the first, you bring up Giuliani. While yes, some parts were left off, he only had about 1 minute to answer what he would do to improve the image of the US, and he started off talking about 9/11 (as always) and wasted his short time talking about separating the people he DIDNT discuss (most of the Muslims) from the people he kept discussing (terrorists). In my opinion, the video on Rocketboom was meant to illuminate these flaws that were present.

Regarding your second example about Hucklebee, the question was not “Do you support the space program”, but “Will you fly to Mars by 2020″? Hucklbee didnt answer that question and once again this video on Rocketboom portrayed that reality as the driving point.

      1. If Dean is right about what was left out (and it appears that he is), I felt as though this rocketboom episode has been deceitful, not informing. What I hate most about standard media is it’s nothing but sound-bytes intended to push you to one side, and the opponent that’s learned to speak in (often meaningless) sound-bytes is the one that is typically portrayed better.

I’m disappointed that Rocketboom would do such a thing in this show. Overall I’ve been impressed that when Rocketboom covers a story that matters, they typically dedicate a whole show to it, and run straight through an interview with few cutouts.

Drew, please leave this form of media manipulation to the likes of Fox News et al. who we have already learned not to listen to.
