i heard about this film this morning on NPR on my way to work, sounds amazing .. .
In other movie news I saw “Into the Wild” last night, can’t recommend it enough:
IMDB page / Wikipedia page
I read the book. What a story!
Stop for a second and just roll that statistic through your mind again. Thirty thousand children ripped from their homes and loved ones and forced into a war.
I am reminded of a project I worked on once about the Indian Schools in Pennsylvania, and how Native American children were abducted from their homes and families and shipped half a continent away and forced to assimilate. Or rather, I should say the colonizers TRIED to force them. More kids died in those schools than graduated, most of them, I believe, from sheer despair.
Working on that project then, I remember seeing the faces of the “new arrivals” in old photographs and imagining my own children in such a hell. When the gentleman in today’s clip asked us to do the same, I remembered that anguish, real pain visited on me by just the smallest taste of that horror.
Imagine your kids torn away from their books and stuffed animals and dumped into “training camps” where, if they are lucky, they will get to become killers. How can such things be permitted to happen, not just once but again and again, tens of thousands or maybe millions of times? Will the bill for this nightmare ever come due?
At times like this my whole view of the world gets called into question. Which, I suppose, is the idea.
Hug your kids. Have a good weekend. Figure out a way to make a difference.

Joanne is a FAN OF THIS MOVIE… ????
Yes, let’s be fans of movies dealing with the IMMENSE SUFFERING OF OTHERS
KNOWING THE UN WILL DO NOTHING? KNOWING THE ARMS DEALERS OF THE WORLD PROPAGATE THESE WARS FOR PROFIT.
What about the 30,000 Acholi children who have been abducted by rebels?
WHERE IS THE UN? WHERE ARE THE UN RESOLUTIONS?
Joanne, perhaps you should’ve asked: “What do you expect to achieve by having made this documentary, besides winning awards?”
“Why do think the UN has not acted on behalf of these children?
“Have you approached UNICEF?”
“What is the reaction of government leaders from around the world?”
“Do you think this film will make the world community act on behalf of these children?”
Oh, Oh Oh. …it’s winning lots of awards, well thank you so much”
THE UN IS USELESS! THE WORLD COMMUNITY OF LEADERS IS USELESS!
Yes. we can all go watch the movie, then go home; play Ninentendo, and have a big fat juicy steak…..
HOMER, THE WORLD’S GONE MAD!
HAPPY CASUAL FRIDAY…
I had the opportunity 2 days ago to talk to Ishmael Baeh, the writer of A Long Way Gone, and a former child soldier. I was able to ask him many questions, and we discussed the effects of outside countries on the use of child soldiers in war zones. He works with several organizations, and is currently pushing legislation to make it illegal for the US to give military aid to countries using child soldiers. Disgustingly, the US funds many countries that commit war crimes. But the problem is that Russia, China and certain other foreign countries have a stake in promoting the chaos in Africa and the Middle East, because it pushes oil prices up and makes it easier to get raw materials for cheap. Many major battles in the Sierra Leone Civil War can be linked chronologically to arms shipments from a Russian Gunrunner named Victor Bout. The Soviets have realized that they can make billions selling off their Cold War surplus stockpiles, while promoting their own geopolitical interests around the globe. The key to the end of the violence in Africa is not in Africa, but in the countries influencing it. As long as destructive neocolonialism prevails and countries give asylum to African war criminals, there can never be peace within the continent.

Thanks Joanne! This is a good show and good topic and I am happy that you got the producer in such short notice. If you didn\’t do this video I may have not seen this.
Maybe it’s time to change the promise of publishing at 9am each morning. I love RB, but am so frequently frustrated.
