OK, the Google pix are cool as hell. I was able to “walk” right past the block I grew up on, and to note that the little post-mounted mailbox I remember so vividly from childhood has been replaced by your standard boring blue mail receptable. Pretty amazing.

But seriously, and without trying to be snarky, what is this good for besides making people like me go “wow”? I can’t think of a real-world application that even begins to approach the utility of, say, being able to call up street-level maps of the entire country, and even look at the sat photos to spot landmarks.

It must cost a fortune to send the camera vehicles chugging down all those streets. Any real purpose to it?

And: via reddit, here’s a guy who probably thinks Google should just mind its own damn business:

Origin of hole on the moon:

One cow didn\’t make it as he tried to jump over the moon.
He imploded, the rest is history… the bees\’ sensitive
radar honed in on this newly created home and figured,
it\’s now or never. \”We\’ve been slaves to the Queen bees
for millennia, let\’s make a break for it.\” And so they joined
forces and flew to the moon. Bee mystery solved.

      Moral: Beeware of missing cows.

    1. well that is simple

First : get the web adress of your image, something like \’http://nameofmysite.something/mypicture.jpg\’
if you don\’t have a site see http://www.flickr.com they provide you free space to upload your pictures
and retrieve you the web adress of your picture (several sizes available)

Then : in your comment just write

      <img src=\’http://nameofmysite.something/mypicture.jpg\’>

check with the preview option and that\’s it.

While creating this mashup above, I came across some interesting history about the Mars Attacks cards that led to Tim Burton\’s movie. You can find it at http://www.marsattacksfan.com/homepage.htm

From the site: \”The cards, which sold for 5 cents a pack in 1962, were quickly denounced by parents who were shocked by the bloody, gory, graphic (cool!) pictures, and were pulled off the market after a very short time.\” Now a complete set is worth more than $2000.
