Odd coincidence: I just watched “Lawrence of Arabia” again the other night — sitting four feet from my 20-inch TV. I didn’t start until after midnight and most definitely was not antsy. Though on the whole, I wish I’d stayed in Tunbridge Wells.
In the summer I find kicking back on the porch with my laptop and an episode or two of “Battlestar Galactica” quite pleasant. Especially with headphones. At two bucks a pop it’s a nice alternative for those of us who think cable TV is the Antichrist and would never spring for it.
Has anyone here actually watched a 60-minute TV show on an iPod? I hear the picture quality is good but still can’t see doing this.

Interesting observation on distance. Although I suspect distance isn’t the real factor. You can watch longer flicks when you are more comfortable and relaxed (stretched out on your big black naugahyde) or when there are few distractions (in the big black darkness of the movie theater).
I hereby disagree with your screen distance/content length thesis. In your ‘closer screen’ examples, the CONTROL/INTERACTION tool was also closer/easier, which is a matter entirely separate from screen size/distance.
And in fact, a small amount of interaction makes people more likely to handle longer-form content — eg, the ability to pause makes someone more likely to watcha four hour movie (albiet with breaks) than they would be in a movie theater.
A whole generation watches more feature-length movies on their computer than in theaters, and though they may engage in other activities while they do so (though many dorms rooms will ’screen’ downloaded movies communally) it doesn’t negate the fact that they ARE watching long form content on a small and close screen, despite high interaction points.
And the parts of the brain that go into passive mode when watching television don’t necessarily when someone’s on the net, so we may not in fact be dealing with a sliding scale, but with two wholly different viewing modes.

I don’t feel like I can afford an ipod, or an apple tv. There are toys for dilettantes, or people with strange priorities. Apple knows many people feel this way, and they’re happy with being a fringe phenomenon.

For anyone who is curious, the “extreme uni wheeling” thing is actually called an “impossible wheel” (also known as a “BC wheel”.
