Doubt it. They’re being raised as conservatives. Man made global warming doesn’t affect them.
But think of it this way: how’d you like to be able to drive a car that you never have to fill up at a gas station? You save money. And isn’t that a great conservative value?
You also misuse the term “efficiency.” It doesn’t mean that the car does what it’s supposed to in the end–it refers to how much input you have to give the car to produce some amount of output. Your pickup is probably near 10-15% in that regard–and again, that means you have to spend more money.
I thought the Bushists subscribed to the idea that global climate change (when they even admit its scientific basis) should be combated with technology rather than policy. Well, these students are the next generation of engineers, and they are doing just that. It’s only Bush’s ties to the oil industry that make this objectionable. But since when was “supporting the oil industry” a good old-fashioned middle-American conservative value?
Since it is the conservatives who want to spend resources liberally, and the liberals who want to conserve, I think those two terms ought to be switched!

You are discouraged by my philosophy, even to the point that you think that I am not truly “American.” So far, all you really know about me is that I own a 4wd Chevy pickup that gets 14 mpg, and that it has the potential to go really fast (even at night), that I consider myself to have conservative political and financial values, and that I am not convinced at this time that global warming is caused by the activities of human beings. As a renovation contractor in northern Indiana, it would be silly to attempt to make a living with a solar powered golf cart. I, like practically everyone reading this, fuel my vehicles with gasoline. I happen to buy Marathon brand because it’s an American company as far as I can tell. So, please try to understand my circumstances, and don’t hate me for being an American. I just can’t bear the thought of you being angry with me and all the other pickup truck owning conservatives out there.

I’m tired of using a gasoline-power vehicle frankly. After all the hassle and costs, I’d rather use anything else.
If I could get an electric car or electric motorcycle, that would be a step in the right direction.
I learned recently that a fully electric motorcycle, without any solar cells that is, comes to about $6000.
