Does Billy Bob Thorton know about this?
Guess it’s time to take a look at

That’s
http://www.vbs.tv/
Shouldn’t they put one camera pointing down or at least varying the angles on the others? I can’t imagine it’ll be too thrilling to capture varying shades of blue as the baloon ascends. Ooooh ooh, they can tile the images onto google maps or some such thing. aaah, I’m being a passenger hobyist.
Mighty neat project!
Hey Sandeskimo,
We’ve got a hacked cvs cam facing down on the balloon that will run for the first 20 minutes of the flight and get that footage. To learn more, go read our wiki at http://balloon.pbwiki.com

That’s an awesome idea–but don’t give any false impressions. It is impossible for a balloon to make it up into “space;” the best you can hope for is just a really high altitude. Even if the balloon doesn’t pop, it will not be able to go any higher than the altitude at which the density of the ambient atmosphere equals the density of the gas inside the balloon. That’s still definitely inside the Earth’s atmosphere, and well below the 100km altitude official definition of space.
Not to rain on the parade, though–it’s still an awesome idea, and I can’t wait to see those pictures!
JP,
I suppose we could call it “near-space.” The sky is black and you can see the curvature of the Earth from 100k, which meets my own personal criteria…
but now that you mention it, I suppose we’ll just have to launch an o-engine based rocket from 100k!
:)

Nab,
Hydrogen is cheaper but I don’t want to drive with a tank of it accross the state! I’m wiling to pay a bit more for safety… however a lot of people do use hydrogen!

This is a feature length documentary that uncovers a retail giant’s assault on families and American values. The film dives into the deeply personal stories and everyday lives of families and communities struggling to fight a goliath. A working mother is forced to turn to public assistance to provide healthcare for her two small children. A Missouri family loses its business after Wal-Mart is given over $2 million to open its doors down the road. A mayor struggles to equip his first responders after Wal-Mart pulls out and relocates just outside the city limits. A community in California unites, takes on the giant, and wins! Producer/Director Robert Greenwald and Brave New Films take you on an extraordinary journey that will change the way you think, feel — and shop.
“Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price is an engrossing, muckraking documentary about the retail giant that’s been called “the world’s largest, richest and probably meanest corporation.” But if you’re expecting an angry diatribe, you’re going to be disappointed. Instead, the predominant feeling coming off the screen in the latest film from director Robert Greenwald is a kind of baffled disenchantment and sadness.”
Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
“The High Cost of Low Price makes its case with breathtaking force. Mr. Scott of Wal-Mart declined to speak on camera, Mr. Greenwald says. The company is worried enough about this film and growing opposition elsewhere that it has hired high-powered former presidential advisers and set up a public relations ”war room” to deflect and respond to criticism.”
Anita Gates, New York Times
“The movie’s masterstroke is to avoid interviewing the usual anti-globalist suspects and let solid, hard-working middle Americans speak. These testimonies, taken from towns and cities across the country, are cripplingly blunt. … By the final credits you may want to picket Sam Walton’s grave.”
Ty Burr, Boston Globe
Launch a rocket from the balloon? Now you’re talking!
What if it lands on my head?
Who writes the English subtitles on dotsub, and what’s the best way to report mistakes?
“bod” should be “baud” and “e-prompt” should be “EPROM”.
Dear whoever-wrote-this, of course you’re not paid enough and can’t do proper research, but _please_ just leave the difficult bit out instead of inventing bullshit. Think of the poor people that become confused when you write sentences that don’t make any sense.
Caught another one: “time track” should be “tinytrak”.
What is your water landing plan ?
