Yesterday I wrote that you matched my mood, well, today you didn’t :-)
Once the radio station is up and running, perhaps they can feature the world’s finest drummer.

That’s nice but really, how useful is radio any more?
Maybe if they transmitted Rocketboom across a digital radio signal, with a receiver connected to my laptop, I might still find radio useful.
As it is, whenever I turn on the audio-only radio I just find the content is so thoroughly bad, so filled with the worst content and ads and in a word propaganda, both from mainstream stations like NPR and independent ones like Pacifica, that radio is frankly quite useless.
I don’t need more ads, more sickeningly scripted content, more corporate crap-music.
Put some Internet content on a data-only radio and make it cheap to download it to my PC, and it would help me more — if the receiver is cheap, that is. Even though it would be only 1-way, some content I download every day anyway, like weather info, infowars.com content, the best videos, and blogs. They could even have a world map that is slowly downloaded over time.
Anything… other than what’s on radio now.
The old media are just that: old.
It’s nice to see Pine Ridge popping up on Rockeboom of all places. But it might have been more interesting to see the actual context of what the radio station does rather than watching the construction of an antenna. Although I’m a big fan of antennas as objects, KILI is a unique station and it would have been nice to see more of it operating as a station. Though I guess that’s what the links are for.
Just curious where the funds came from for rebuilding the radio staion??
If Pine Ridge can get new radio station equipment, then can America get a new President? We really, really need one!

Yesterday, I replaced the ink cartridge in my pen….I’ll send you a vlog on that if you would like. Really, sorry to say, that was quite boring…I didn’t learn a thing about what or even where Pine Ridge is, or what kind of radio station that is, or what it means to the local community, or for that matter, how a transmitter and antenna work….or even how a guy feels climbing up a thin stack of metal so high up and what looked like a cold day. RB and its field correspondents can do much better. Oh, and my ink cartrige is a MontBlanc into a less expensive case, which I learned a year or so ago, on RB.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Pine Ridge is in the Western Half of South Dakota. It was interesting to see something from SD on an international stage again. Usually the only time we make the news is when we are having -20 weather or a big snow storm. (The eastern half is being shut down today because of blowing snow, yipee). I found it very interesting that none of the workers looked Lakota to me. I hope we have a follow up with some actual Lakota content. I will assume that the tower and transmitter is being paid with casino gambling money as the unemployment on the Rez is normally pretty high (75%+ vs 2.5 for the state). This also tends to lead to high rates of alcohol and drug use. But enough of the depressing stuff, maybe they can grow the radio station to the level where they will bring in advertising money from the “white man’s world”. Oh and for all you “right to choose” liberals. Pine Ridge banned ALL abortions including the day after pill in June of 2006. Since they are exempt to a certain degree from federal regulations, the Supreme Court most likely can not overturn this abortion ban.
I’m with you Drew. I always feel enriched when I hear of other cultures. We have been isolated and insulated in this country from knowing of other cultures. Keep up the good work.
Your webcast sucks, but it has addicted me. I can’t go a day without watching it. But nevertheless your web cast sucks…

Great News for the Lakota station, congrats from us up here in the far north at http://www.midnightsunpowwow.net
We love to see something done for our Lakota friends
We will be listening over the web for sure.
I disagree with those who say radio is outdated. AM radio which today is basically “talk radio” as it should be, provides a forum for local, national and international issues. It is a chance to voice your opinion using a real voice, and interact with another human being on the other end. It is also an invaluable tool for the elderly, many of whom are lonely and so it provides them with a sense of community as well a friend they can listen to throughout the day or night.
Don’t expect them to get on-line. Sure there are your Rush Limburgers and Hannity’s etc. but there are still quite a number of good local radio hosts who provide many different services. Podcasting radio shows are fine, but it won’t allow you to interact with an interesting guest, speak out on a certain topic or tell you there’s a traffic jam straight up ahead.
Did you record the intro yesterday?
Just curious.
I would have.
What happened to the “good” camera and where did the lighting go? I know Joanne is pretty, but the other camera was much better…
Didn’t really get today’s episode but I can profess my love for radio. Never used to go for it but it’s definitely an age thing - it’s a total comfort blanket now and it’s so great when you stumble on a great local station. I’ve lived in developing communities where radio is a real-life line.
Also as a brit, I cannot quite describe the feeling of hearing BBC World Service wherever I may be. And the feeling of total inner peace when listening to Test Match Special… it’s priceless. I love radio.
I liked it. Nice, slowpaced, and something we don’t usually see. I agree - the great thing about rocketboom is its variety. For those who didn’t like it - wait til tomorrow, you know it will be different (unless we are going through another of those “everything is going to be NYC-centric” periods.
This webcast was very unique, interesting, and perfect for a slow news day. Was today a slow news day?
No Mr. Vandalay, you importer / exporter / you architect it was a busy news day…
