Hmm, actually not as interesting as usual, or maybe it’s just that I got that Monday feeling in my body.

Was that with Bob Barker as guest host?! We’ll be in NYC the last week of July; that would be so cool! Especially if it was a walk-about Casual Friday or a Ruud Elmendorp feature; we’d get to go to Kenya!

What is that strange object Joanne is holding? It sorta looks like nytimes.com but it… kinda…. folds up?

New RB comment sorting feature; my 2 cents:

I’d rather plow through the comments as they come; the good, the bad & the ugly, without having to make sure I set the filter correctly. With all the new show/hide/threshold etc one can easily miss something that is being filtered if the settings aren’t set just so.

Sorted by rating also takes away from the context and flow. If comment X gets negative votes and its followers get varying degrees of ratings they will not be displayed in the sequence written and thus make less sense than if viewed as a group. Then one has to go back up and reset the filter and start again; too much wasted time.

Can the ‘preferred settings’ be memorized by user ID? That way I’ll set them once and leave them.

Is the rating system actually providing RB with anything useful? If 10 of us read a comment and 5 vote negative and 5 vote positive the rating remains at zero so it gives the impression no one thinks anything of it but in reality 10 of us expressed our views. Perhaps an accumulation of neg & pos votes would be better.

That’s all I have to say (for now).

    Rock on!

    1. I don’t have a strong opinion at the moment about the ‘hiding comments below threshold’ feature. But I do agree with C-C’s point that showing both total positive votes and total negative ones would tell us more about how well a comment was received than just showing the sum of the two. I would endorse that change if it could be done easily; otherwise it’s probably not worth the bother.

    2. Thanks for the feedback, we’ll certainly take it into account while we’re tweaking things.

Your preferred settings are indeed remembered. Also we switched back to ‘oldest first’ as the default sorting style.

      1. Another comment: I sent a mail some time ago regarding implementing a rating threshold for comments. I don\’t know if it was because of my comment you implemented it, but I still want to give you my view on the current implementation and why I told you to implement such a system.

The reason I did it was because the increasing amount of spam that\’s hitting the RB comment section. My idea was to make a self-cleaning system that lets people remove spam and other trash by collective effort. So my idea was that comments that have received a lot of -\’s would eventually be hidden. My idea for the threshold was maybe 10-20, to ensure that no real comments were to be hidden.

Setting the default threshold to 0 on the other hand is not only a bad idea but according to me jeopardizes the free speech in the comments section, since the cast of a single vote by one user will hide a comment for people using default settings.

My opinion is that you should set the default threshold lower - considerably lower, (-5 or lower) and also allow thresholds down to -10 or less.

A comment can be a valid point that can be discussed even if it receives 1 or even 5 -\’s.

I too, being a brick-carrying Luddite (we don’t believe in cards), like the straight chrono comment sort. As long as that’s an option I can cope. Threads do make it easier to steer off into a corner, which is appropriate sometimes and other times seems to break the rhythm of the whole. Depends if you have 18 comments or 78, I guess.

The totals for plus and minus ratings would be nice. I seem to remember a now-defunct blog from another borough that experimented with that. Though his was too easy to run up the score on. This’n works better.

At 9:22am the above post from leron has a -1 ranking. Now why the heck would that be? Did another brick-carrying Luddite take offense? Did someone not know what ‘brick-carrying Luddite’ means?

I think this comment ranking system doesn’t really bring any true value; whether it shows totals of each, as suggested, or a cumulative total as it is now. That’s why I’m interested in knowing what RB intends to draw from it.

Ideally one should have to validate his/her vote on a comment with yet another comment answering: why are you voting this way? That, however; would take us way off this comment forum’s purpose which is to share our thoughts on the current RB episode.

I’ll keep mulling this over today!

Jeez, really. Like Nab’s -13 up there; what’s that about? Didn’t they see Kam’s shark drawing? Society is so set on the ‘got to get it here and now’ that little effort is being put into looking left and right (or researching an unknown) before making any decision. Pretty sad state when most answers are now just a click or Google away.

  16. I don’t think comments should be rated at all. If you don’t like a comment you open your mouth or in this case, your keyboard and offer a rebuttal or your own point of view. If you’re too lazy or ignorant to rebutt an argument or state your own case then who cares what you think. Pressing a button showing a + or - is an easy way out. Speak up. That’s what freedom of speech is about. That’s what differentiates new media from old… where they couldn’t care less what you think as long as the ratings bring in more shareholders.

Say what you think and think what you say.

Even an “I disagree” would suffice. Or “cool” But say something.

I think the plus/minus rating system is annoying and as Nab has demonstrated, it can be tampered with. Let’s see WHO YOU ARE MR/MS PLUS OR MINUS. Show your face. It’s only a nic so nobody knows who you are.

Just my 2 cents. (…and too lazy to correct my typos)

What??? We can use nicknames in here? Cool!

So, what do you think today\’s show will be about? Shall we speculate on the possible causes for the delay? Maybe Joanne had enough of the Manhattan heat and went to hit the beaches in Long Island, where she was lulled to sleep by the sound of the surf and finally awoke late this afternoon a darker shade of lobster. Or maybe her eBay iphone domain auction paid off and she retired.

I’ve got a question for Drew, Joanne, or another member of the team.
What do your new sponsors think of the sporadic rate at which you’ve been releasing episode recently?
Does it not piss them off that they pay to be advertised on the main page for a day, and some get 30 hours, while some fall short with about 18?
Cos it definitely pisses your viewers off.
You should just announce a time & stick to it, like you have been doing for so long. Whats up with it?

Had to chime in after reading al the previous opines.

Love the +/- rating system. (of course, I only use it sparingly)

The ’sort’ thing is LAME. Not often I see trolls on here anyway! This ain’t slashdot. ;)

(OK, I know I’m gonna get a troll rating for that one :P )
