Call in Bono to save the day. I’m sure he or his blue, green & red shades could solve the problem…besides the cash U2 hides in various corporations to avoid paying taxes could rebuild the whole town and build a proper distillery. Listening Bono? Put your hands in own pocket$$$ for a change.
If I were living there, I’d drink myself silly everyday too.
Hmmm…To think we have worries…
P.S. Nice shirt Joanne!
Very shocking and eye opening to see how these poor people live. And we go mental when our cell phone is out of range !
Aww, in Dutch. How confusing! A very sad story, I think it was also broadcasted on Dutch TV.
I was being facetious when I suggested Bono clean up the mess. Then again, let him put his money where his mouth is.
In case you didn’t read the link within the Slate article, here it is:

Looks like a great opportunity for Walmart.
Its a win-win.
Poverty, one of this worlds biggest problems. Even here in the land of Milk and Honey we have problems with poverty. Alcohol, and greed just makes the problem worse, and in the 3rd world countries the gap between the rich and poor is tremendous.
I recently have had my car break down on me, and also had a mechanic tell me it was going to be extremely expensive to fix. That has bummed me out, as well as being carless. Watching your show today made me rethink my current situation. And I think that is why I like the 2.0 version so much more. You guys show me the world, and remind me everyday how lucky I am and how much work we all have to do to make this world better. Thank you very much. I am in you debt.
It shifts perspectives. I wonder how we manage to always find new glasses that seam to ‘correct’ the distortions.
Bonsoir,
The human forfeiture has of limit only that of those who contribute to it. Follow my eyes.
Across the alarming report which marks in this report, it is true that the RB format reduces the field of investigation, it had been interesting to have points of thinking on the knowledge of the saving (humanitarian) initiatives in becoming or in installation, if existing, at the level of this overwhelming context.
S.
What a great piece… thanks very much for that RB. I think the variety of stuff you cover very much sets you apart from anything else out there at the moment.
Can we please not draw assumptions about these people on this board? Frankly I doubt very much that they choose to live in filth and destitution.
I’m sure most Africans are nice people, but let’s face it, their problem is overpopulation and that’s caused by their conscious choices. I read an ethnography about one tribe and it was their practice to be very promiscuous. I heard an interview on NPR where an African said that in his country, a person who doesn’t sleep around is considered crazy. So, too many people means competition for resources, and that means conflict, some of it gruesome.
Where does all the bono anger come from? I mean I have no idea if he is a good guy or an ass, but I guess we think he should sit around in the Four Seasons doing coke, getting hookers, and working hard at self destruction like any good rocker is expected to? Shame on him for thinking about something other than himself even if it is only for a moment.
Excellent piece.
On a purely technical matter, the white subtitles are hard to read. Maybe color them?
wow thats sad a couple tribes get in a fight all about some ooze wow.and i disagree with retodd the subtitles are large enough to see
More than a billion people worldwide live like the people shown in this piece.
A 2002 UN report defined a slum as: overcrowding, bad housing, inadequate access to water & sanitation, and insecurity of tenure (meaning they don’t legally own or rent their homes). The UN report estimated that in 2005 the number of people worldwide living in slums would pass 1 billion. Good book: “Planet of Slums” by Mike Davis.
Ruud’s stories are always interesting. This one is no exception.
