  3. That’s the problem with democratic elections, it is not always about choosing the best fit for the job, but to select the less worse of all.

…the more shameful thing is how we’re all about appearances and phenotypes instead of ideas and content.

  4. Less than half of military service members now consider themselves Republican. And the percentage is declining rapidly

(I know you guys were just trying to be humorous, but this stereotype is just no longer true.)

See this article for the proof and details.

  5. I can’t wait to see the Kerry Deux announcement. That should feature all of the flaws that Joanne so deftly pointed out. Plus it will be a lot of laughs.

  6. So already we see the claws come out from Joanne repeatedly calling Mr. Brownback by derogatory variations on his name, everything from “bearback” to “brokeback”. Why do the democrat candidates not get the same treatment? Fair and Balanced? More like: “Vote against Bush at all costs”. The democrats need to realize, they should no longer be trying to beat Mr. Bush. His term is up, he can no longer be reelected. The democrats need to put out their own strategies and ideas instead of just trying to criticize what the republicans are doing.

  9. Thanks for catching me up on this stuff…I’ve been hearing about the vids, but haven’t watch any until now. Obama’s got nice lighting, sure, but would it have been that hard to move that weird rack thing out of the way? I kind of dug the soft focus of his background though.

  11. Hey. It was a really great idea to examine all of the videos instead of the issues right now…because they all basically said the same thing in the videos anyway. “Lower taxes, Better heath care, boo war” etc. However, I didn’t like it that Joanne never really called Brownback by his actual name.

Whatever. I’ve been on the Obama train since he got elected into national government. Maybe it would be a good thing to have a president that hasn’t corrupted over time.

I like Hillary too, but she’s just too polar. People really hate her. Personally and politically. I am a woman, and I’d love to see a woman president. But I don’t think Hilary will win.

Obama and Hillary have a lot over overlapping ideas anyway.

  13. Hillary is vile. She’s the former LOBBYIST (read: pimp) for WALMART, she’s therefore a corporate whore and profiteer in the ongoing class war. Everyone agrees she’s just in it for herself and her massive ego. In polls I’ve seen, only 6% of Democrats want her to run.

On a lighter note, what’s this?

  17. That was lots of fun, and the information about video technique was interesting.

I think Hillary’s main aim was to not look angry, because the VRWC* already has talking points out about how angry she is.

Is there a way to save/copy this episode on to a disk to replay?

  20. Sen Brownback’s video was not shot on a greenscreen, - though the hard backlight makes is look that way - but it doesn’t really matter.

Most RB viewers are not his target audience. His core audience, to win the Republican primary, are conservative repbulicans, who do not discuss how tight the choke on a green screen matte is or isn’t.

None of this analysis helps in determining who will be a good president: it just determines who is a good candidate.

You guys have a great show but this episode did your reputation a terrific disservice.

Brilliant idea to do a side-by-side analysis of the candidate’s video announcements.

That said, your viewers are not children who have no previous knowledge of film terminology. The JUMP CUT of Hillary’s elbow was not “a lie.” What we filmmakers would call a lie, for example, is your ridiculous claim that a slowly-swaying camera indicates a boring subject. While Hillary is. in fact, mind-numbing, the proper terminology for the camerawork would be STYLE. An element I have to admit I have not frequently seen on Rocketboom, despite being a frequently clever show.

Also, talk about bad editing!!! How long was that inane Brady Bunch intro? And if you’re going to put us through that, make the grouping of families actually make sense! What does Bush have to do with anything?

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=KG10Ao4_LP8

After all, it featured cool music, honest lyrics and kick-ass “religion of peace” animation. Shame, shame, first I’m nominated, then ignored for that redcoat Martha Stewart Clone & Co.
Hmmm… That’s “not right” Joanne. Besides, I did all the editing* myself…
    (Lie*)

BREAKING… “Cruise ‘is Christ’ of Scientology.” I think I’ll pull out and let TC take over… he’d probably win over all those other clowns…

Besides TC ryhmes with JC…maybe those scientologists have a point. A sick one…but still a point…and he’d didn’t have to lift an elbow.

    To Joanne and Co.-
I must say that is the fairest Rocketboom that has ever been done about politics and you people know I am your toughest critic about that. You could have done without the comment about Brownback and calling him Brokeback and it would have been absoultely perfect compared to the MSM. This was well done and I never thought I would say that about you guys. You need to keep that up.

  27. Really enjoyed today’s show - RB seems to have settled on a nice pace and presentation style recently. And you seem to have cottoned onto the fact that big kids are just suckers for Dr Seuss.

I find it amusing that some people are getting stressed out about Rocketboom’s treatment of the subject matter. This isn’t CNN heh?

The Brownback/Democrat error was a bit schoolboy though (or schoolgirl) - you seem to realise he was Republican by the end mind - quality control lapse…?

A bit more attention required I think you’d agree.

great show… I must admit my attention to the RB has been on the decline— what’s up with the plastic bag messages?! (know your audience and don’t preach to the choir)— but today’s show was spot on… great RB reporting and drawing on vlogger expertise… good job… hope that this continues…

  32. I had the pleasure of listening to a speech by Obama in Phoenix in October and actually shook his hand and talked with him for a few seconds. He absolutely has my vote. I just finished his book and his theme of the “Audacity of Hope” is right on and what we need to have in our country after 8 years of George W and is inane and simply horrible leadership.

Election?, there’s going to be an election?

Who is going to win? And, more importantly, is anyone cute or funny running?

This whole “he understands America, American values, terrorists, bla bla bla better than the next guy” criteria hasn’t seemed to work this decade, so maybe the criteria ought to be who is the most entertaining, …oh wait (heckofa job Brownback), that hasn’t worked so well either…

  35. Disappointed. Though handled with a modicum of intelligence and wit, the whole analysis placed meaningless form over real substance (which was entirely absent), and as such embodies exactly what is so completely broken about our ‘political discourse’ as Bob Somerby will frequently say.

The corporate media spent endless hours analysing Al Gore’s ‘earth tones’ and inventing stories about him lying (he didn’t) about being the inspiration for a character in a movie. Buoyed by such mush, a real incompetent liar becomes president and ropes us into the worst disaster in our history.

If you want to do a ’style’ piece, great! Do a show on fashion. If you want to do a ‘horse race’ piece, that’s fine, too! Weigh the pros and cons of the Bears vs. the Colts.

But don’t do this kind of shit with politicians, and delude people into thinking they’ve learned something useful as a result.

  43. Rocketboom isn’t bound by any ethical code of fully disclosing their beliefs or relationships because its past posts are all publicly available. Furthermore, we tune into Rocketboom because of its bias (whether political or ideologocial or simply philosophical). There is a tacit bias in every news reporting agency that is implicit in the content that is qualified as “news.” What’s more relevant is the tone of Rocketboom is largely shaped by the conversation of the viewers and the Rocketboom producers as the design of the site is geared towards and driven by a blog-style conversation. If anything, Rocketboom is working towards the ideal (or antithetical ideal of news), a news program tailored to the interest of the individual.
    Cheers.

  45. I’m no conservative, but if I didn’t know who Hillary Clinton was, by her video’s background set and visual style I would have thought it was one of those pharmaceutical ads for a prescription drug that treats an embarrassing condition for seniors. I half expected to hear a complete drug risk disclaimer voiceover at the end.

I hope this doesn’t presage yet another bungled, mismanaged Democratic collapse at election time.

You should do one of those analyses of the word frequency in their speeches, like someone did for Jobs, Gates, and Dell’s recent keynotes. That stuff’s fascinating too.
