  4. Rocketdude… ha, I need to check with my female friends if they lied to me about watching the show every day… Must be strange to suddenly know who you are talking too. No?

  5. Check out these pictures-I think that they would make good story links. And while, they don’t have that computerized fashion sense, the beautiful scenery will grab that 8% of female viewers, and turn it into 9? or maybe even 10%!

  6. Great episode! Love it when you go back to the traditional boom stuff.

As for the male/female demographic it may have more to do with vblogging in general. I don’t think that Rocketboom’s coverage is particularly “male” on any given day. Also, I would think that the often more liberal slant on the news would attract females. Trying to feminize the show might have some undesireable consequences in terms of audience dropoff so I would suggest proceeding with caution. You don’t want to lose your core audience.

Regarding death in advertizing, I have to say that some of the VW commercials of late have been disturbing. Suicide and car crashes don’t make for a positive feeling about a product.

  7. Oh, come on. Everyone knows that there are no girls on the Internet. The 8% are just guys pretending to be girls.

  9. I can’t stop laughing about the device which “lights up when her baby’s diaper needs changing.” God, how sick can technology get? :)

The evolution of JC’s reaction to the pink purse was priceless.

  10. Those male/female demographics simply can’t be correct. I am 28, female, in a monogamous relationship, I’m a freelance copywriter at the largest ad agency in NYC, and I model part time. I’m not a computer geek, but I watch RB every day. I’m often amazed how the combination of offbeat news, political commentary, and heartfelt coverage of events in 3rd world countries influences and inspires my writing. I can’t imagine watching the show just because the host happens to be attractive. She’s also incredibly smart and witty. And attractive. My signficant other doesn’t watch the show, but I’m going to encourage her to start, if only to get this female ratio back up.

  12. So, what was Joanne doing in California?

    Tale of a different sort!

  14. Very informative stuff - great show, interesting survey and fantastic American Mic interview. Plenty to chew on.

I’m with the crowd here - RB is not inherently male-skewed. Joanne is a big part of that. My female friends who have watched find it all very accessible and… well, non-threatening. But they don’t watch regularly - they just don’t connect with the medium of vlogging in the same way? The merging of internet and TV will sort that out I expect.

Don’t change RB - wait - vlog it and they will come.

  15. Some reasons to hit a Beemer with a Hummer:

    1. To see how compressible the BMWs are.

    2. To remind BMW driver they are mortal & not superhuman.

    3. To encourage BMW drivers to switch to better cars e.g. Priuses.

    4. Because BMW drivers like getting attention.

  16. Bonsoir,

we can currently note important dominions in the higher spheres of influence in this world.

For example, the decision without discussion not to send new troops in Iraq in your country.

So, a little idealistic message from France :

    “Make love, not war”

To illustrate this aspiration, I propose to you a mythical scene (the music also) of a French cinema masterpiece, by Claude Lelouch, with the sublime Anouk Aimée and the talented Jean-Louis Trintigant:

“Une homme et une femme” (1966)

    S.

    P.S

I wish to dedicate this scene to a French woman of exception. She will recognize herself. ;)

  17. I have always felt that Rocketboom was geared more towards guys. Whenever I have introduced RB to a male friend, hosted by Amanda (especially when she wore thick glasses) or Joanne, I got a “Hey that was great; a cute, smart girl talking about nerdy guy stuff” reaction . . . followed by instant bookmarking of the website.

When I have introduced females to RB, they say “Huh, that was neat”, but don’t seem to be drawn back on a regular basis.

Being an inquisitive, 30-something, Mac using, indie news site reader guy, RB has held my interest. As a college librarian and a Gen X-er pushing 40, it is quite untypical in my work and social life that I fit into the typical demographic profile of an audience such as RB.

  18. Hey Joanne

I watch every new episode with my wife, and sometimes twice with our little boy to stop him from shouting “Rocketboomrocketboomrocketboom. . . .” (He saw it once and what can you say, he was instantly smitten.) Anyhow, I filled out a survey but my wife did not, so consider that when worrying over your demographic. Besides, if I wanted to watch a show with testosterone I’d tune in to zefrank.

  19. HAPPY YEAR OF THE PIG RBers

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=oZeGR236Vb4

It is supposed to be an auspicious year
where having a baby ‘Pig” is greatly encouraged.
So if more females are born in 2007, Rocketboom’s demographics should even out in a few years. RB 5.0 ?

Joanne is The Dudette. Her Intelligence, wit and zany charm
disarms other women, just as a stunningly beautiful woman does. Which is why many posters mentioned their girlfriends would watch occasionally.

It’s how our society functions in general. If Naomi Campbell were Oprah (smarts and all) and came decked out everyday in her supermodel fashion outfits do you thing she would be a hit with mainstream American women?

    I think not.

I predict many baby girls for Year of Pig. Not to worry, soon female % will equal 33.33%. B-man fortune cookie..mmmm!

I’m one of the women who did the survey. I like gadgets, robots, the stories of things like the group which was doing the sander racing. I don’t want to see a pink purse! Don’t stereotype the gender.

  22. Good idea, bill:

Maybe Rocketboom could add video-translation to its audio-translation where you present the same content but the host is an attractive male?

  24. those stats can’t be representative! I’m sure there are more female viewers of RB - I’m one of them!! :) Yay! Maybe females are just less likely to fill out the surveys. I only filled one out because of sheer boredom at that particular moment. Any other time and I would have just snickered and moved on. Like now… ok, bye bye ::tee hee::

  26. Oh, come on - Rocketboom is *hard news*?

This is an actress/talking head delivering entertainment *data* in a slightly salacious way, targeted towards men.

    Women could care less!

  28. Hey, fellow female fans! Are your girlfriends even familiar with Rocketboom? If not, send them the link! Once they’ve watched an episode or two, they’ll be hooked like we are. Doing so, we can help to curb gender imbalance in the vlogosphere.

  29. These are exactly my thoughts, so true I figure it was worth repeating:

    Rich:
Joanne, The best way to explain why there are so many men watching RB is to look in a mirror. You are one smoking hot woman. When you add your incredible wit, superb sense of humor, and amazing intelligence, you present a brief glimpse at our dream girl every weekday.

The hair? Do you have a mirror there? It looks like something “line-rider” would cook up.

Let me know. I’ll send a comb along with the mirror. ;)
