Once upon a Monday morning, while I rose all tired & yawning,
I picked my clothes up off the floor.
While I nodded, nearly crashing, suddenly there came a thrashing,
As of someone violently kicking, kicking in my chamber door.
‘Tis some idiot I muttered, kicking in my chamber door-
    only Chris and nothing more.

In the dark I hit the crapper but I forgot I had the clapper
But my feet were stuck in sand
Shirley, said I, is that someone eating lettuce at my window
And I only have one hand
Then, upon the velvet sinking, I betook myself to thinking
Who the hell is kicking, kicking in my chamber door
Lo & behold I discovered, it aint Chris but Mother Hubbard

    huh? oh sorry…gotta go…lp

Maybe you godless liberals call that “clapping,” but to me it’s some sort of Satan-inspired hand undulation.

  7. Beautiful!

Now to quoth from Poe’s essay, ‘The Philosophy of Composition’:

“…and all experience has shown that this tone is one of sadness.
Beauty of whatever kind in its supreme development invariably
excites the sensitive soul to tears. Melancholy is thus the most
legitimate of all the poetical tones.”

    Nevermore!

  18. The Sound of One hand Clapping

What is the Sound of the Single Hand? When you clap together both hands a sharp sound is heard; when you raise the one hand there is neither sound nor smell. (Smell?) Is this the High Heaven of which Confucius speaks? (I don\’t know, I\’m just a B-man) Or is it the essentials of what Yamamba (…sure that\’s not Yamaha?) describes in these words: \”The echo of the completely empty valley bears tidings heard from the soundless sound?\” (definitely Yamaha-beyond sound™) This is something that can by no means be heard with the ear. (Unless Kam made an audio version of his poem) If conceptions and discriminations are not mixed within it and it is quite apart from seeing, hearing, perceiving, and knowing, and if, while walking, standing, sitting, and reclining, you proceed straightforwardly (to fall asleep?) without interruption in the study of this koan, you will suddenly pluck out the karmic root of birth and death (man can I use some plucking or ____ing) and break down the cave of ignorance. (oK. I\’m sold) Thus you will attain to a peace in which the phoenix (Joanne) has left the golden net and the crane has been set free of the basket. ( A tisket, a tasket) At this time the basis of mind, consciousness, and emotion is suddenly shattered (it already is); the realm of illusion with its endless sinking in the cycle of birth and death is overturned. (Like the Titanic) The treasure accumulation of the Three Bodies and the Four Wisdoms is taken away, and the miraculous realms of the Six Supernatural Powers ( YES!!!) and Three Insights (YES!!! AGAIN!!!) is transcended.

My humble apologies to: p. 164, Yabukoji, in The Zen Master Hakuin: Selected Writings, Translated by Philip B. Yampolsky, Columbia University Press, New York and London, 1971.

  19. Shame on us Rocketboom team, not only do we bastardize the man’s poem, may he rest in peace, but we add insult to injury by misspelling his name.
It’s Edgar Allan Poe, for those of us who noticed.

This is an example of a perfect episode of RB. Internet culture, literature, humor, information, and lots of Joanne doing what Joanne does best. Joanne, I adore you. To everyone else at RB, I adore Joanne….and great work on today\’s episode.

I love the words and the rythym of them in this episode. The writer (or modifier in this case) should indulge themselves more often. It was a brilliantly executed, er, execution of one of my favourite poems.
