That’s great, thank you! Please let folks know it’s available and to email us their feedback (translation at rocketboom) on how it’s working so far. We’ve been working closely with dotSUB on this and think its going to be a really useful service for a lot of people, even outside of Rocketboom.

The Dotsub service seems like a great tool. I hope it picks up steam. I wholeheartedly agree with Michael (guest) that we are migrating toward using video to communicate easily and seamlessly, not just across cultures as he stated, but also person to person (or peer to peer - P2P), business to client(B2C), and business to business (B2B). It adds a much more human and dynamic element to a conversation of any kind.
Several online audio/video communication tools already exist; some more universally accessible than others (hint, hint, see link!) and videophones are slowly starting to appear in some markets but IMHO may quickly fall by the wayside if Internet applications and VoIP keep charging ahead as they are. I think Dotsub has a bright future.

I am hoping you guys share some usage stats down the road: How many languages, how many viewers in different languages, etc.
Do you have to type a transcript every day or do you have a copy of Dragon handy for that?
This feels like interim technology. Its strength — relying on the kindness of volunteers with language skills — is also its weakness. Sadly we are a few years yet from flipping a switch and having computers handle the translation bit. (I have reduced more than one elementary school classroom to hysterics by taking a paragraph in English, running it through Google’s translator into Spanish and back into English.)
But it’s a huge step.

Just wondering what would happen if somebody did a “Woody Allen” What’s Up Tiger Lily… For those who don’t know that particular movie, he replaces what is being said in Japanese by some very funny sub-titles that have nothing to do with the actual dialogue. Some pranksters (like me) might be seriously be tempted to “translate” or B-translate what is being said into something extraordinary, like “Hey, what’s up with them B-ees?”

I do and watch ES daily. The problem with translating what Katrin says is much of it is quips, dry humor, & sarcasm which does not translate literally to make any sense in English. Any suggestions?

Good job adding that last line there just to make it near impossible to translate. I did translate the whole thing into Finnish, though.
A computer scientist completes his new translation software. He types, “Out of sight, out of mind” and translates it into Chinese. Then he takes the Chinese phrase and translates it back into English, wth the result: “Invisible lunatic.”
Can the translated text be indexed by Google and other web search engines?
The ability to find videos by searching the entire text would be a powerful tool made possible with this technology.
