  1. When this guy is done dropping out of college, he should go back and get a degree in ethnomusicology.

There are grants for people doing this stuff! He should go after them!

    Great work

By the way, it snowed in Philadelphia today. The Robin outside my window looks a bit miffed.

Nice. Very. An excellent way to prime the mental pump for the week as the first coffee seeps in.

But Chuck, I am confused. I can\’t find Kenya, Minnesota on the map…?

  6. Great piece, I really liked it… what would anyone like to write about the Maasi, travel abroad, or The Boom in general?

  7. Those wacky Massai. Aren’t they adorable? They must be, because everyone adores them. Can you imagine if people were adored without being adorable first? It would be illogical!

But wait, the argument that the Massai are adorable because everyone thinks they are, I recognize that as an appeal to majority. Oh no! Bogus reasoning.

But of course we know that the media love the Massai and frequently visit them to videotape their antics and music, and this is surely because the Massai have something interesting to offer. Thus the media imply they’re adorable.

But wait, the argument that something is true just because the media say so is an appeal to authority. Hm! Just as bogus.

Well, still, if I could get myself the shots needed to go to Africa I suppose I would.

  9. Hans is back in school thudying anthropology, and I know he wants to study ethnomusicology as well. He’s also formed a nonprofit foundation with some Maasai) to help them things like AIDS prevention and clean water wells.

Oh, and check out Hans’ funky Dance Band. :-)

Hans, a very interesting & compassionate chap, thank you for building the school, great report, well done.
On a lighter note you prove once again that \”White Men Can\’t Jump\”
There is a brand of shoe on the market called MBT \”Massai Balance Technology\” supposed to emulate the way Massai walk through the sand, good for the posture etc. I bought a pair (impulse buy) They suck! & @ $265 they could have @ least enabled me to walk for days in the desert or even jump a little higher but alas, my posture remains the same & my vertical leap pales in comparison to even Hans. I got sucked into the ad hype, what was I thinking, the Massai don\’t even wear shoes, so I\’m back to going barefoot & I don\’t think any money is kicked back to the Massai (could be wrong there, I\’m sure someone will inform me) oh, & since I\’m on the subject of shoes, Crocks are a piece of crap too! very bad for the feet, especially the yellow ones.

  13. Yes, I\’m disturbed by some aspects of Maasai culture too - how about drinking cow blood for a special treat?!

By the way, if there are any fans of the band Low, you can spot Alan Sparhawk in this video walking in the school. Low held Christmas concerts and have all the money to this project.

not only is this a beautiful story, but a perfect illustration of how everyone needs a significant and meaningful experience in their young life in order to develop perspective on what is real. a life changing experience such as this helps to define the individual and open up. especially useful in answering the personal question - who am i…

  15. I know this doesn\’t have anything to do with today\’s show, but it\’s tough to not talk about the mass shooting at Virgina Tech today. I wonder if anyone, like me, is so tired of our incredibly liberal and insane law that permits people to own and carry guns. Not to say that if we didn\’t allow this, there would be no killing like today, however, in countries where guns are illegal, the rate of gun-afflicted murders pale in comparison to the USA\’s. It\’s just sad to see our President come on with a statement about the \”rights to bear arms\” but we should respect the laws. That surely didn\’t work today or pretty much any day in America where people die from guns. I would much rather face a knife-wielding maniac than someone with a smi-automatic. Does it really make sense to still have a law in place that was written in 1776? And for those of you who say it\’s not the guns, it\’s the people using them, that\’s a really weak excuse. As I said, people will still find ways to kill, but I like my chances more less guns out there.

Yes, I meant to mention that we have isolated incidents like this were in other parts of the world, especially Iraq, this is an everyday occurrence. Very sad indeed.

Yup. 33 dead in Virginia makes people spit out their coffee and run for the TV. Thirty-three dead in a Baghdad market bombing is one line in a story about the war.

As for guns: I think it’s too late. There are a gazillion guns in this country.
