FIRST!
(Had to do it at least one day.)
Wow… as usual, Joanne got skillz!!!
AND… she looks like Princess Lea (sp?) too!
Jo need to learn how to use her weapon?
I think not!
Wow. I had started feeling bad about the fact that I just ceded another $70 to George Lucas for the new old versions of the original trilogy on DVD - but now I see that I’ve nothing to be ashamed of.
Joanne. As usual you continue to amaze and astound. May be force be with you.
Anyone know if there is a similar group in Boston? I totally want to try a bo staff form with that Darth Maul thing…
That’s the best one yet. Joanne, you are getting there. Though we/I miss Amanda. :) cheers.
=;-)
have are noticed the Joanne factor of adaptation
day after day ?
Today, Its haircut: Princess Leila one. :)
S.
Joanne,
Do or do not, there is no try
May the force be with you
How old is that guy to be playing Star Wars? He’s just a skinny version the the Star Wars kid. Joanne is being very charitable to say it’s not that geeky. I wonder what she’s really thinking?
Joanne,
Great fun to see you strut your stuff. The light saber is classic. Does the thing really have sound effects or was that dubbed in?
Nice reflexes there, Colan. But oh my, regardless of what the drooling guest had to say that is not a martial art. I don’t care how badly anyone howls, the fanciful activity in which the young guy was participating was not a martial art. It is to martial arts as Numa Numa is to Dragostea Din Tei by O-zone.
.
Entertaining! Fascinating! But, that guy was just a little but creepy. Cudos to the Colan for not playing along when he stated that he had forseen her arrival…

Very gracious interview. Good stuff for a Friday!
the sabers really do make that sound … flynn has actually studied a lot of different martial arts beyond light saber fighting … he’s in the process of putting together a martial arts movie, so maybe we’ll check in with him later!
Joanne;
May the force be with you!
I’ve always tried to be supportive, but that just sucked. It’s bad enough for an adult to pretend to be a Jedi Knight behind closed doors, but to do it in public and act like it’s some kind of martial art is, like, “Betty Ford Clinic” strange.
B-Man’s link “http://www.grapheine.com/bombaytv/play_uk.php?id=1628444″
needs to make it into a rocketboom cast! That is a cool video and a cool site!
Do you take us for a bunch of weak minded fools? Dressing up like Leia and recklessly waving an uber cool light saber around - Good Lord!
We will not fall for your paltry Jedi mind tricks.
Well…some of us probably will.
Hey, I’ll be the first to admit to being a bit geeky. But…yeah… That’s a couple of levels up there. Anyone remember when Triumph the dog visited the Star Wars fans at one of the movie openings?
You were being quite polite Joanne. How you didn’t snicker is amazing. Anyway, fun little show!
Another version inspired by B-man :

Good WE,
S.
Hi Joanne,
I know something that will help your snowflakes to settle, but I’d better not say what. You did look really cute with your hair up, very nice. You are such a beauty Joanne, see you next time. Just hope I can make till then without you.
On one hand I’m amazed by the passion that these people have for their craft, on the other hand I’m wondering…who has the time for such things?
Well, I guess everyone needs a hobby. And in New York everyone loves to put their eccentricities on display for all to see. Even geeks need to battle for attention.
Ha,
next Friday, Rocketboom vs. Ask Ninjan materializes in the physical realm. Keep posted!
Make it stop, please.
For the love of god, make it stop.
Very nice. Rocketboom is at its best when it shows us things that the mainstream media would probably scorn.
Ah Grahsswatcher, learning the ways of the force are ya? Good. I don’t know though…the sounds of clashing plastic kinda ruins the effect. Anyways, great show!
They should learn some basic sword play before trying to pawn this off as an art. First and foremost, protect yourself: keep your elbows down!
No true fighter would expend the energy of holding the weapon so high (exposing the body so completely to the opponent) and no true fighter would let his or her opponent get away with it. Instead, they would attack the target presented by such overhead shenanigans.
Great show….nice saber work Joanne!
Some of you boomers could relax a bit. Geeky! Cm’on, who runs around calling people geeks anymore, so 80’s. Take it easy, let your snow flakes fall and enjoy what you call fun, and encourage others to enjoy what they call fun -
I am surprised at the negative responses and the arrogance of some of the comments. My son was a martial artist who represented the US at a world competition and I am sure he would say that skill is involved here. It is wielding a sword that just happens to make a noise and is lighted. I say it is cool.
I just hope that light saboring… dueling…twirling… or whatever… isn’t a profession somehow. I still can’t believe that a friggin’ skateboarder makes more money in a year than I as a teacher with 30+ yrs experience have made in the last 10 years. If he DOES make money from that.. please don’t tell me. :-(
JOANNE! Awesome interview! You guys rock, thank you for taking the time to feature our little crew. It’s fast becoming an international interest no kidding in the slightest!
As for the doubters, this really is becoming a martial art, and pulls in multiple forms of dance and other martial arts. No, it’s not real, it’s stage combat, and no, we’re not teaching “Jedi Ways”, we’re acting. We all make time for the things we enjoy doing, right?
Come and enjoy some fun, why don’cha!? (thanx jj and LH! - right on!)
Creepy? Me? Geeky, but mos def’ly not creepy.
:)
Well, I thought it was cool, anyway. Would I go out on the street and do it? No…but that’s because I’m super self-conscious.
And I have to imagine that if you get really into it, it’s probably a pretty good workout. Sure, it won’t do you any good in a real swordfight, or anything like that, but at least it’s activity! And it’s fun to suspend reality for just a little while!
This is how you should really train:

Hey Joanne,
After meeting you at PodCamp, having a staring contest, and telling me your though process behind it, I can see how you would be good at this and enjoy the challenge.
Nice episode.
–Steve
LH,
Perhaps you’re right and some of us went a little overboard with our comments.
I’m also happy your son represented the U.S. at a World competition…. WHICH WORLD!!
Always something new! In the words of Austin Powers - RB has its mojo back … go JoCo!
Great episode - loved the show. Now then, if you REALLY want a lightsaber, check out Brian Silva’s “Sith’d” at:

Now THAT’s a lightsaber!
Happy Friday, MoonLitNite
oh!joanne, you are true star wars.where j can to find it?j like to be in an uproar it.thanks you
Is it true?!?!?!
Did I catch a glimpse of a tattoo on Joanne’s flat tummy? (right side).
Doesn’t matter what you do, you are fun!!!
It took about 5 minutes to load the entire movie, this site is dead in the water if it can’t even get the front end working.
http://www.rocket.boom.justgotowned.com/
1.Replace rocket with a first name
2.Replace boom with the last 3.them then send it to you ever you just noobed.
4. repeat and laugh at them.
Another brilliant Friday episode! Better than the last three Star Wars films in fact:)
Lightsaber deuling seems more reminiscent of Kendo to me. e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh2TNO5CGXQ&
Da forCe is strong, wit dis one, yo’!
Misa thinky Joanne sa bombbad warrior.
First she takes Amanda’s job; now she wants to be Princess friggin’ Lea! I can’t wait ’til she tries to take Monica Lewinsky’s job…he, he , he said “job”. Dang, Drew just censored me,…again.
Oh~~~~Joanne~~~Princess Joanne~~
May the force be with u~~
Great episode! That looked like a lot of fun… and Joanne’s hair and white outfit worked perfectly, good choice.
Fun, fun, fun–I really like it when you go out places and do things in the big New York world. Why not learn how to do lighted swords? You’re a good sport, sweet one.
genius!!!
I have to agree with Steve…..it was very lame…..
Reminded me of that silly kid in his basement “Star Wars Kid”…..is this his older brother?
On the other hand….is it any sillier than grown people pitching big ceramic-like balls down a wooden floor to knock over wierd shaped statues????
It’s pretty fun but why the blind faith toward Lucas all the time? When they invent swords like this they wont be hiltless. They will have all kinds of hilts to block blows near the grip. Maybe that’s just what the look Lucas wanted for the camera. Their group should invent a few other types. The samarai sword does have a small hilt unless there going for more of a staff approach.
People should make sure they learn sword techniqe as we lost it.
That was cool.
Steve L,
A doubter still, I see. My son represented the US in the Second World Wushu competition in 1998 in Rome, Italy. Of course the US team did not compare well with the Asian teams, but was a standout then among non-Asian teams from Europe and North and South America.
Wow, so much fun! Flynn seems great, would like to really see him in action.
What’s age got to do w/it? I’m hearing about the 60+ age group having a blast w/light saber training. Looks physically challenging, great exercise, and brings a smile to the face. Very cool.
Joanne, Drew, and Elspeth, it was great meeting y’all at Podcamp Boston 2006 last week, May the force be with you, I love how Rocketboom keeps evolving, ever changing, redefining the medium as it goes.
Excellent! My little brother desparetly want one of those lightsabers :)
You can buy those lightsabers at some book store/video store chains, and at novelty stores in the mall. They cost a mint.
Joanne gets bonus points for graciousness in the fact of extreme provocation.
This “martial art” isn’t very martial or very artistic. You would need exponential notation to quantify the geek factor. It is on par with learning to speak Klingon.
As usual Joanne looks great, although that episode is as boring as most other episodes of this week. I hope this week is going to be better again…
Great fun, I want one.
