Wow. I had started feeling bad about the fact that I just ceded another $70 to George Lucas for the new old versions of the original trilogy on DVD - but now I see that I’ve nothing to be ashamed of.

Joanne. As usual you continue to amaze and astound. May be force be with you.

Anyone know if there is a similar group in Boston? I totally want to try a bo staff form with that Darth Maul thing…

  8. How old is that guy to be playing Star Wars? He’s just a skinny version the the Star Wars kid. Joanne is being very charitable to say it’s not that geeky. I wonder what she’s really thinking?

  9. Joanne,
Great fun to see you strut your stuff. The light saber is classic. Does the thing really have sound effects or was that dubbed in?

  10. Nice reflexes there, Colan. But oh my, regardless of what the drooling guest had to say that is not a martial art. I don’t care how badly anyone howls, the fanciful activity in which the young guy was participating was not a martial art. It is to martial arts as Numa Numa is to Dragostea Din Tei by O-zone.
    .
Entertaining! Fascinating! But, that guy was just a little but creepy. Cudos to the Colan for not playing along when he stated that he had forseen her arrival…

  15. I’ve always tried to be supportive, but that just sucked. It’s bad enough for an adult to pretend to be a Jedi Knight behind closed doors, but to do it in public and act like it’s some kind of martial art is, like, “Betty Ford Clinic” strange.

We will not fall for your paltry Jedi mind tricks.

  18. Hey, I’ll be the first to admit to being a bit geeky. But…yeah… That’s a couple of levels up there. Anyone remember when Triumph the dog visited the Star Wars fans at one of the movie openings?

You were being quite polite Joanne. How you didn’t snicker is amazing. Anyway, fun little show!

  27. They should learn some basic sword play before trying to pawn this off as an art. First and foremost, protect yourself: keep your elbows down!

No true fighter would expend the energy of holding the weapon so high (exposing the body so completely to the opponent) and no true fighter would let his or her opponent get away with it. Instead, they would attack the target presented by such overhead shenanigans.

I am surprised at the negative responses and the arrogance of some of the comments. My son was a martial artist who represented the US at a world competition and I am sure he would say that skill is involved here. It is wielding a sword that just happens to make a noise and is lighted. I say it is cool.

  30. I just hope that light saboring… dueling…twirling… or whatever… isn’t a profession somehow. I still can’t believe that a friggin’ skateboarder makes more money in a year than I as a teacher with 30+ yrs experience have made in the last 10 years. If he DOES make money from that.. please don’t tell me. :-(

  31. JOANNE! Awesome interview! You guys rock, thank you for taking the time to feature our little crew. It’s fast becoming an international interest no kidding in the slightest!

As for the doubters, this really is becoming a martial art, and pulls in multiple forms of dance and other martial arts. No, it’s not real, it’s stage combat, and no, we’re not teaching “Jedi Ways”, we’re acting. We all make time for the things we enjoy doing, right?

Come and enjoy some fun, why don’cha!? (thanx jj and LH! - right on!)

Creepy? Me? Geeky, but mos def’ly not creepy.

  32. Well, I thought it was cool, anyway. Would I go out on the street and do it? No…but that’s because I’m super self-conscious.

And I have to imagine that if you get really into it, it’s probably a pretty good workout. Sure, it won’t do you any good in a real swordfight, or anything like that, but at least it’s activity! And it’s fun to suspend reality for just a little while!

Reminded me of that silly kid in his basement “Star Wars Kid”…..is this his older brother?

On the other hand….is it any sillier than grown people pitching big ceramic-like balls down a wooden floor to knock over wierd shaped statues????

  51. It’s pretty fun but why the blind faith toward Lucas all the time? When they invent swords like this they wont be hiltless. They will have all kinds of hilts to block blows near the grip. Maybe that’s just what the look Lucas wanted for the camera. Their group should invent a few other types. The samarai sword does have a small hilt unless there going for more of a staff approach.

People should make sure they learn sword techniqe as we lost it.

    Steve L,
A doubter still, I see. My son represented the US in the Second World Wushu competition in 1998 in Rome, Italy. Of course the US team did not compare well with the Asian teams, but was a standout then among non-Asian teams from Europe and North and South America.

What’s age got to do w/it? I’m hearing about the 60+ age group having a blast w/light saber training. Looks physically challenging, great exercise, and brings a smile to the face. Very cool.

  57. You can buy those lightsabers at some book store/video store chains, and at novelty stores in the mall. They cost a mint.

Joanne gets bonus points for graciousness in the fact of extreme provocation.

This “martial art” isn’t very martial or very artistic. You would need exponential notation to quantify the geek factor. It is on par with learning to speak Klingon.
