I love the fact that cell phone use is increasing by such massive leaps and bounds in the developing world! It’s so cool to watch countries go from virtually no telephone communication, to virtually 100% wireless phone communication- makes the developed world seem pretty old, having participated in that whole land-line craze.

  6. I just got rid of my cell phone. I had it for just a little over a year. I truly hate it. It’s interesting to see a culture that requires a cell phone for more practical uses.

“If you want a stable and robust network, wired has got it over wireless anyday”

True. But stating it that way is to miss the third criterion - “cheap to deploy quickly and massively” - and the developing world gives that criterion the heaviest weight, especially when it turns out that the stability and robustness, while not the best, may exceed their requirements anyway.

  14. What, and we’re supposed to believe that Africans are poor and eating bugs? Shit, I don’t even have a cell phone because they’re too expensive. Susanne Sommers and her starving children can go to hell.

  15. So, does that mean the good old fashioned “jungle telegraph” (drums) is defunct? Is anyone trying to preserve that tradtional way of messaging that we all grew up with in Tarzan movies for the younger generation? Or will it be like great music, all dwindled down to he choice between Britney and Kanye at the download record stores of the future. I bet there were some African Beethoven’s of drum messaging out there who will be long forgotten before long.

  18. It’s pretty cool seeing all those familiar Nairobi places even though cell phones have been this big of a thing for several years now in Kenya and Africa on the wider scale.

It’s also useful to see the reactions of people not well associated with Africa as a way of gauaging how much information people have about places like Kenya. The verdict? Not very much.

    Thanks Rocketboom!

  21. As a Kenyan, Ruud’s reports are a special treat! This report was excellent because he showed how enterprising Kenyans are using the phones to increase their productivity to make up for other infrastructure deficiencies.

    Keep them coming.
