  1. I just want to say, if you want to understand Somalia, check out a book called Aman, about a young woman’s experience growing up there. I had to read it for a cultural anthropology course and it was fascinating. There’s even mention of when the Islamic types moved in, and abused everyone. Clearly Islamism is a scourge, it ruins everything it touches.

  2. This story puts many ‘things’ in perspective prior to our (US)Thanksgiving Day.

One comment: why don’t these people set up latrines on dry ground instead of deficating in the river? It’s simple, easy and sanitary.

  3. Click below for the book I mentioned. It’s at Amazon or perhaps your local library also has it.

Note! Because the book was written by a liberated Muslim woman, you will see some mindlessly negative reviews juxtaposed with the appropriately very positive reviews.

  4. gmrbill: “… I can’t help but wonder about how my own government wants to only help those countries who have oil or are of strategic importance.”

Did you research your position? At the USAID website, you’d learn that the United States is providing substantial assistance to Kenya, with programs focusing on governance, sustainable use of natural resources, agriculture, economic growth, health, and education. Perhaps that is not enough and we could do more, but to imply we are doing nothing is inaccurate.

  5. Jake: I agree with the basic view that all religions problematic. To be concise I left out Christianity, which you seem annoyed by. Personally, I’ve had minimal contact with Christianity, so I’m not going to commiserate with you.

But I do think you’re ignoring that these religions vary in oppressiveness. How many modern Christians do you see piously cutting off people’s hands or heads, requiring female circumcision, encouraging slavery, requiring that infidels be specially taxed, treating women like chattel, or requiring that those who reject the religion be killed? Islamism makes Islam a totalitarian religion, as people say, but really it is worse because it resembles Nazism. (Maybe that’s why Bush has so many rich Islamist friends.)

The interesting thing is, it seems Mohammed didn’t envision the Islamism of today, which compounds the oppressions of the Koran with the oppressive Hadiths. He merely copied Judaism as he was taught it, added a sprinkling of Arab idolatry (e.g. the Hajj) and called it a religion. Then he went around killing people.

Ultimately all religions are products of the cultures that embrace them. If American Christianity seems deranged to you, look at American culture to ask why.

  6. Religion could be called the problem, but that wouldn’t be completely honest either. If some people need religion to feel better fine, but when it becomes an excuse for hatred, it is sad.

  7. The basic problem is that Islamism believes in a mandate, issued by god, for revenge.
The Christians mandate is forgiveness. Which one will lead humanity into total destruction?

  8. Usually I hate these particular pieces of “Oh look at the poor of the world and how they are suffering while you fat Americans bask in your fortune”
But the show today did not take that all too easy route. If fact when they showed the bags of food, I caught the words Canada and I thought I saw USA. So I reran the episode and stopped it. And I was right, One bag says “Gift of Canada” and another bag says “USAID”. Thank you so much for this episode.
New point - I find it very sad that when it rained, that nice fairly pure water could not have been stored to provide drinking and other sanitary uses of water (bathing, cleaning garments, use medicially for cleaning wounds or infection). I assume the reason new laterines were not built on dry areas is that the rain has made the soil unstable for digging deep holes.
I will have to thank God an extra amount this weekend that He chose for me to be born in prosperous America and ask His protection be over the refugees in Kenya (or whereever else they may be). BTW-what religion are the refugees?

  10. Lebanese Christian Cabinet minister Pierre Gemayel was shot dead in Beirut today. (That makes 5 Lebanese officials in 2 years) Gemayel was a supporter of the anti-Syrian parliamentary majority.
Syria along with Iran are prime supporters of terrorist Jihadi groups.
Further proof that Islam truly is a Religion of Peace. Did I mention the beheadings of the 3 teenage (16-year old) Christian girls at the end of Ramadan in Indonesia which was carried out to delight Allah.

I posted a link to Youtube last week on Islam Exposed. I suggest you check it out.

As for painting all muslims with one brush stroke, there are supposedly 999.9 million moderate muslims in the world who simply sit back in SILENCE.

When these tens or hundreds of millions of moderate muslims take to the street and denounce the barbaric acts being perpertrated in the name of Allah…I may put my paint brush away.

To me SILENCE speaks louder than words. I’m reminded of history and the year 1938.

As Kam mentioned, funny how UN trucks can’t reach the refugee camps…
while the RB field correspondent had no problem…

Back to Islam, look what happened to Saman Rushdie.

  11. To Jake:

Anthropologists point out that religions rarely define culture (beliefs and behaviors).

Thus religion is a parasite. It adapts to an society-wide audience, i.e. to both peaceful people and to killers, so major religions tend to support both killing and peace.

Thank you for asking Ruud to cover Somalia. I knew from being there that the situation was not as stable as it is in Kenya.

To the rb viewers, this will be my last post. It seems I have offended Drew and one of my IP addresses have been blocked from posting to this site. I hope this post will not be deleted but that is in Drew’s hands.

Leron, our political views may differ but we could always discus our differences in a logical manner. I appreciate that courtesy immensely.

For the record, I was uncomfortable with Joanne commenting on the American political system but I have no personal beef with her. I like to think that I am still loyal to the original hostess who will remain unnamed or risk deletion.

  19. Jake & Leron,

There are a handful of muslims who have spoken out about the Koran, Hadith and Islam in general. Its tenets, principles and beliefs. What has been the result? Some Imam immediately declares a fatwa on them. Many of the fatwas’ are death warrants ready to be carried out by the radical extremist muslims. There are many in the USA who presently have bodyguards and must hide their whereabouts for fear of being executed/asassinated–why–because they chose to speak out.
Because they were ashamed of what was being perpertrated in the name of their religion. They were courageous enough to come out and speak the Truth.

All I’m saying is, there is strength in numbers. If you don’t want the world to view your religion as a “Cult of Death” speak out, march, do something. Don’t cry victim, victim. And Leron, SILENCE is the reason Hitler rose to power and caused the mass murder of 12 million people, yes, 6 million of them Jews. Germany at the time had the most educated and cultured people in all of Europe. (The lesson here— Evil can rear its ugly head anywhere)

Comparing suicide bombings, barbaric hateful beheadings, 9/11, the debasement of women, and the fornication with animals as allowed by the Koran ( yes, there are explicit references) doesn’t compare with priests molesting young children. (Unfortunately, not only preist molest children—whole other topic)

In a way, you’ve made my point for me….The Religion of Peace behaves like The Cult of Death. The hatred of extremist muslims hell-bent on Jihad is frightening. I guess you didn’t watch the video Exposed??

It portrayed a tiny sampling of what goes on in the muslim world.

All American & European muslims do is complain and cry foul at how they are being victimized. Well, to muslims everywhere, continue to keep silent about your brothers in masks and things will only get worse.

What’s Darfur about? Who’s doing the killings?
In today’s report on RB, who was that man with the cane running away from. Why were 3 beautful 16 year old Christian girls beheaded and their heads displayed as trophies? There are hundreds of other examples with one common thread: Islam.

It doesn’t take a political genius to figure this one out.
It’s 2006, not 450 AD which is where the radical Jihadis would like to take the world.

    Allah Akbar!

  23. Leron you wrote: But B, when I look at the examples of extremists gone wild you provide, all I can think is, well, no wonder the vast majority of Muslims can’t/don’t rise up. They’d get their heads cut off.

Exactly my point. The 1% intimidates the 99%. That’s no way to live. And these extremists can’t be allowed to hold the world hostage. The bombings in Spain, in England, etc, etc,

My links were presented as examples to a few of today’s posters. Do I hate what they are doing? Damn right. I hate people who behead 16 year old girls, who blow up buses with innocent people, who bomb embassies killing hundreds, who blow up tourist resorts, subways. And don’t think if they got their hands on a dirty bomb, an American city wouldn’t be sanitized. If you accuse me of hatred, yes I hate these vile inhuman extremists, islamo-fascists, jihadis—yes I DO!

The world would be a safer more peaceful place without these suicidal maniacal murders.

They have been introctrinated to hate since they were tiny tots. The thousands of madrasses in India
are creating the next generation of Islamic suicide bombers, because like American kids go crazy for PS3, these kids can’t wait to martyr themselves for Allah and kill as many infidels as possible.

To me hatred involves presenting misinformation, like Ernst Zundel and the Iran dickhead ruler, both of whom deny the holocaust ever happened. That’s pure hatred! Not simply ignorance.

For someone so well versed in the atrocities of humanity, you seem to jhave a rather nonchalant attitude. Go ahead, kick back and have a shot of tequilla,..have the whole bottle. What will be will be won’t make those nasty headlines go away.

  26. Regardless of the religion debate, this video shows us in the west that we have lots to be thankful for (regardless of who we thank for it). Lets allow that thankfulness to motivate us to help those around us. We may not be able to help those in Kenya as individuals, but we all know people in our lives who need a kind word, a new friend, or a helping hand.

Thanks Rocketboom for providing glimpses into the things that we do not typically see on the mass media. I am continually enlightened by your creative content.
