  2. That is quite the video. Who is that girl in the end of it praising a flag so footloose and fancy free?

I suppose it is not important, but reverence to those that fought for freedom before, and saludos to those who fight for freedom now, and in the future wherever they are are.

  4. War is revolting, sickening, nauseating,
    it’s foul, and disgusting.
It’s atrocious, horrid, sickening, and ugly.
    It’s vile, wretched, and repugnant.
    It’s depraved, perverse.
    It’s hell.
    Lets honor and esteem
    all those who participate.

  9. Nice call on the 48-star flag from the black and white era to match the footage. Doubt that the tank top short shorts and hair style would match though. Unless of course this was taken at the Swedish Embassy in the summer of ‘45.

to die on some wars frontier.

it is so peaceful on the bone yard,
we will put your name on the heroic gun chart.

it is good to kill those who are bad…
even their wives and children won’t be sad.

the beautiful fabric of the holy woven flag,
will be you comfortable body bag

relax my friend, many have died
    the death came with explosions
    no reason to sigh

another perspective on mother US shows how proud we are that
    in honourable murder you rest

the stars will shine in burning flames and wash away those enemies and smash them down like clay

breath up you proud nation, breath up and shine
my enemies mother and daughter will wine.

breath up and burn them all away and open a channel
    for the american way

    Come you masters of war
You that build all the guns
You that build the death planes
You that build the big bombs
    You that hide behind walls
    You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

    You that never done nothin’
    But build to destroy
    You play with my world
    Like it’s your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
And you turn and run farther
    When the fast bullets fly

    Like judas of old
    You lie and deceive
A world war can be won
    You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
    That runs down my drain

    You fasten the triggers
    For the others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
    You hide in your mansion
    As young people’s blood
    Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

    You’ve thrown the worst fear
    That can ever be hurled
    Fear to bring children
    Into the world
    For threatening my baby
    Unborn and unnamed
    You ain’t worth the blood
    That runs in your veins

    How much do I know
    To talk out of turn
You might say that I’m young
    You might say I’m unlearned
But there’s one thing I know
    Though I’m younger than you
    Even jesus would never
    Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
    Is your money that good
    Will it buy you forgiveness
Do you think that it could
    I think you will find
When your death takes it’s toll
    All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
    And your death’ll come soon
    I will follow your casket
    In the pale afternoon
And I’ll watch while you’re lowered
    Down to your deathbed
And I’ll stand o’er your grave
’til I’m sure that you’re dead

  20. And which President and his minions was selected to be the target of Dylan’s lyrics in “Masters of War”? Most of the historically illiterate will automatically shout out Nixon. But sorry folks. It was the war monger brother of Senator Ted Kennedy: Saint JFK. Ah, for the good old days. And that good old chestnut delivered at a ‘bed-in’ in Montreal: “Give Peace a Chance” Why that must have been Nixon’s fault too? Even though he’d only been in office less than 120 days and didn’t even have a cabinet in place. But to those same historically deficient know it all’s, that is probably enough to pin the blame on him for something that was started, promoted and allowed to get completely out of control by Democrats. But, hey, never let a few facts get in the way of the truth.

  21. The flag at the end was the one covering her grandfather, Kenyon Congdon’s, casket and presented to her grandmother at his funeral. He died in the service of his country in 1942. The last shot was taken from the second floor of our house, and to my knowledge is not altered.

  23. CEM: Maybe you should be locked in a room with @ 100 Afghanistan women and try to convince them that life was better under that Taliban, burkhas, no female education, and being murdered for no good reason other than not being a virgin, or wearing finger nail polish which would cost you a few lopped off fingers, etc. etc. Oh, and in your case they would probably just stone you because you cannot spell. But then again, on second thought: You would meet their ideal as an uneducated oaf and probably be canonized as the new prophet.

  27. I see the Charles Lindbergh Society is alive and well. Me? God? Nah, just an ordinary American who celebrates their Constitutional right to spout off about anything I choose to regardless of who it offends or pleases. Which is one of the wonderful blessings that we celebrate today in this country and those who died to make it all possible. Now I don’t know where you come from, but, I don’t think this will change anytime soon. So you may as well get used to it.

  37. Re Spazo’s comment to Amanda’s Mom — unless there’s been some name changing, the older Ms. Congdon grew up without a father-in-law rather than a father, since the fallen soldier’s name was Congdon.

  38. Amanda,
That’s some good Boom. At first, I thought it might be a tongue-in-cheek comment that was disrespectful of the idea of Memorial Day due to the old worn footage of Memorial Days past, but the shot of you standing reverently at the end dispelled those notions. (I think RBs usual tongue-in-cheek approach to the news set it up that way.) CEM: Get over yourself! It’s no small notion to sacrifice your life regardless of the motives of the current administration. I happen to feel the war in Afganistan is the right war to fight; the war in Irag is the wrong one. The current U.S. Adminstration is a bunch of lying morons, but the men and women dying or living scared of dying should be honored for their willingness to put it on the line. Christopher

Over 50,000 Americans and millions of Vietnamese died in the Vietnam war. The same Vietnamese government that posed a “threat to US national security” then is still in power. Today, airlines and travel agencies from around the world offer cheap beach vacations in Vietnam. Some security threat…

We must honor the brave people who fought and hold our elected leaders — especially the Congress, Democrats and Republicans alike, who authorize these wars — to a much higher level of accountability.

Assessing threats to national security and giving the President authority to wage war needs to be done much more seriously with a much higher burden of proof.

  42. I wanted to say something about all the people who seem to be condemning memorial day. In the end this poem from Charles Province says it best.

It is the soldier, not the poet,
who gives us freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the reporter,
who gives us freedom of the press.

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
who gives us freedom to protest.

It is the soldier who serves beneath the flag,
who salutes the flag, and whose coffin
is draped by the flag, who gives the
demonstrator the right to burn the flag.

    Bye Charles Province
