You look better in pink Amanda…. you kind of get lost in the map with the greenish shirt.
The earthlink ad is acceptable….but it could have been done with more zest instead zzzzzzzzzz….I’m sure that’s not your fault.
It was a very good show today. Thanks RB
This ain’t the first time a politician has been caught doing stupid things with their cars.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/1459928.stm
I also remember a story about John Prescott (Deputy British PM) doing a press meeting at a British Train station. He said he’d take the train to work as a testament to their reliability. What the press didn’t know is that two stations along he had his chauffeurs wait for him with his two Jaguars. He just got off and drove to work…
excellent. Love the way you are rolling with your chair.
Great show as usual. I wasn’t that surprised at those Congressmen with their SUV’s - realistically most politicians on both sides of the political spectrum don’t practice what they preach. What I did find funny however, is that with the size of both those guys’ fat asses…they could have used the walk, plain and simple.
BTW, nice credits page! The red and white rocks.
Time to raise the bar of the show.
Instead of getting better you seem to be phoning it in.
The content is slipping and you are replacing it with commentary.
On the flip side you looked great .
I understand that HBO wants to make you the fourth wife on “big Love” - is this true?
Isn’t TV better for Amanda? What is a video blog?
Hey Amanda,
I may be reading you wrong, but if it weren’t for immigrants there wouldn’t be anyone here? Mayhap there are some tribal folk out there that might disagree? Otherwise a great show as usual. :-)
Hey Manda,
Nice show, great you. As Bill Parcels says, “you are what you are,” and you, Manda, are a superstar.
Good idea to shift stage left and get Japan out of your hair.
“We’re all immigrants, man; otherwise there’d be no one here…”
Um, er, except those who are indigenous, or native, to the Americas.
The earthlink ads were not as fun as I was expecting. They’re well done from a corporate video production standpoint, but they’re too serious.
[disclosure: I am an earthlink employee]
Seems to me that there’s been a recent trend towards less Amanda and more field correspondents. As interesting as the non-Amanda reporters are, my preference is for Amanda and her on-screen personality and opinions.
..and I seem to recall that the issue concerns immigrants who enter the country without registering, hence they are “illegally in the country”.
Unless I missed some dialogs, I’m pretty certain no one in Congress has raised any issues about immigrants who follow the official rules for entering the country.
When did the ‘illegal’ qualifier dissapear from the arguments and protests?
also, if the laws are modified to grant this amnesty, shouldn’t everyone be required to file tax returns and pay back tax contributions, and shouldn’t every employer be required to submit back FICA and Unemployment Insurance payments?
I guess the amnesty issue is still up for discussion, but this is the US: we may grant citizenship, but its never been free.
Well… (cute cute cute)
Nobody in America without immigration? Shame on you rocketboomers. That’s awfully imperialistic :(
Lane,
I have nothing against the commontary but without content it’s useless.
All I’m saying is the show has the potential to be better all the time.
best

Ahhh Immigrants!!
Let the human race expand the horizon of self-improvement by
embracing the opportunity of new lands and dreams, having the chance to built a new future where peacefull co-existence is the common denominator.
We (humans) have been doing the immigrating thing(from Africa) for new lands for over 200.000 years, so Amanda is right we’re all immigrants!
even Native Americans.
(earliest EarthLink)
Cheers!
Amanda, you said “There would be nobody here if not for immigration!”
Well, the indigenous people we have aptly named North American Native Indian wouldn’t have been wiped out by the millions and would now be thriving while respecting
the land, promoting their own culture and would NOT be building HUGE CUBES to shop at.
Today in 2006, they wouldn’t be confined to little concentration camps where they are the truly forgotten, alienated and ignored.
Oh yeah, let’s let them build casinos, that’ll keep em off our backs. Outta sight, outta mind, right!!!!
Maybe if WAL MART would do 38 BILLION dollars of business with Mexico instead of the wicked regime in China half way around the world, Mexicans wouldn’t want to leave their own country and would enjoy a higher standard of living.
(not that I’m a fan of Wally Box- but seems they are here to stay)

AS an aside: When will ROCKETBOOM BROADCAST IN 3-D?
I WANT TO WEAR THOSE FUNKY 3-D GLASSES AND HAVE AMANDA IN MY FACE.
I liked the Harvard protest touch. Maybe they would start taking illegal students? You know, screw your tuition. Just teach me for free. I’ll do the studying that nobody wants to do. Just give me my degree. Hmmmm. That would work. NOT. What if somebody got a prettier girl and just copied your scripts and images the very next day? And started siphoning off your customers. Some wouldn’t know the difference. Some would. An Illegal Rocketbam with Samanda Kongdan would be fair game. But, hey It’s a free country. Or is it? Really. Oh, and I missed the pic of Vanity Fair’s latest Enviro Fairy, Julia Roberts not taking the subway from her broadway show and dutifully plunking down in her giant Jimmy Suburban for that four block ride back to the hotel.
I read the sign that said
“WE NEED USA TO WORK BUT USA NEEDS US TO WORK TOO………”
as
“…but USA needs US to work too…”
and think: The US needs itself to work? What?
then realize it’s all-caps-related placard-confusion.
Sharpie should have a thing that pops up “CAPS LOCK IS ON” as you’re making a big sign. That would help.
guees
The entire planet is a land of immigrants if you go back in history. Every country is a manmade construction, so lets have that Alien invasion (extra-terrestrial) and maybe we’d all finally unite on this magnificent BLUE BALL.
(the original blue ball)
I think the Earthlink ads are much more aesthetically pleasing than the ATM thing ads. Much better. Shorter. I like them. I hope they don’t start cramping your content though.
And as far as the immigrants go, while all humans are immigrants in so far as when our ancestors evolved in Africa they “immigrated” into existence and when our ancestors left Africa, they emigrated out of Africa and immigrated into the rest of the world. But this kind of immigration is completely different from the kind of immigration that is at issue today and I’m not sure that saying we’re all immigrants (in the evolutionary sense) nullifies people’s concens about modern day immigration.
Double *Yuck* on this episode.
First, your immigrant stance sucks. I’m lefter than thou, but immigration should be done legally. (I’m an immigrant.) The current laws should be enforced, with provisions for folks with no criminal record and employment to stay. Throw the rest out. You can’t keep a nice place nice if you just let everyone in.
Second, these adverts are too much… namely too much time. I appreciate that you folks need a way to pay for RB, but how about more subtle and shorter in length.
But they’re at the end of the episode! Don’t like ‘em? Then don’t watch ‘em.
It’s ironic that marches seeking to grant extra-legal rights to undocumented foreign workers took place on Law Day (May 1st), the annual observance the the United States is committed to the rule of law. “Immigrant” is a term of law that refers to a person seeking to enter a country legally for the purpose of permanent residence. Without America’s commitment to the rule of law, we’d devolve into chaos.
A woman’s right to choose? Guaranteed by law.
Freedom of speech, of religion, of assembly, and of the press?
Guaranteed by law.
Two-term limit on Presidents?
Established by law.
Grand jury investigation of Presidential aides who reveal spy names for political gain?
Established by law.
I don’t want those laws ignored, do you? The problem comes when we think we can pick and choose the laws to obey; that’s a slippery slope to dictatorship. The same is true for our immigration laws. Immigrant forebears fled to here from tyranny and the absence of the rule of law to seek freedom and the rule of law in the U.S.
Sure, there are unjust laws. Work within the system to change them; don’t flant your disobedience. Flaunting unlawfulness is what people blocking abortion rights do. I wouldn’t want to emulate them. However, if one believes that the only remedy to an unjust law is to disobey the law, then one should be willing to be a witness to the injustice. Accept the penalty. That’s what Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., did. It’s what Nelson Mandela did. Gandhi would have neen insensed if he was not meted the punishment required by law.
If every illegal alien, instead of marching, were to present himself or herself to U.S. immigration officials and said, “Deport me”, could the Government handle it financially or organizationally? If they all said to their employers, “Pay me the legal minimum wage, pay social security taxes for me, withhold my income tax”, what would happen to the economy? Rule of law. Yes.
Just imagine, if the Europeans hadn’t invaded America, the native Indians could be all the way up to the stone age by now. And the illegal Mexicans could actually raise the average income and standard of living for Americans.
1)I don’t know if the best way to proclaim your right to work is to take the day off.
2)I liked the commercials. People who bitch about selling out usually aren’t doing anything worth selling out for.
hey…what happened to Amanda’s cool t-shirts? there been one for a while :(
ps..don’t mind an ad at the end just don’t eff up a brilliant show by letting the $$ control it
I want the media to follow me to work and see the 20,000 folks who do not agree with protesting in support ill-eegal aliens right to work by not working. I pay more taxes than any 3 ill-eegals combined. I say “Raise the income taxes of all protestors to 50% to pay for services provided to illegal aliens!”
Drew, Amanda,
Kind of walking the ragged edge of preachiness with the immigrant thang. Wouldn’t want to see RB turn into a bully pulpit.
As to the Earthlink spot, I think you are doing a good job using imagination and creativity in the ads. Like RB, the ads seem to be different each day. If you keep them to a couple every week or two, it should be possible to avoid repeating, which is what really makes advertising *tiresome*. As I was watching today’s trailing ad, I realized I really did want to stay and see the rest of it. Good ads can do that. Keep at it, and let’s see if you can change the paradigm a little. I recall in a previous installment, you discussed (with Dave Winer maybe?) the whole notion of experimenting with ads in the same spirit that RB experiments with video and vlogs. Please, just don’t go corporate on us! It’s Amanda’s zaniness and the whole personal ambience that makes RB and other vlogs (DriveTime, for instance) so great. I feel like you guys are my friends even though I’ve never met you.
Joe C.
Don’t need no more lies!

Ok folks, a few things to kind of summarize what I’ve read in the comments today.
1. Yes, the Native Americans were here first, however I believe what Amanda was implying is that the vast majority of United States citizens today, for one reason or another, are descedents of immigrants from Europe, Latin America, or where have you (don’t want to offend the where have you’s so: Africa, Asia, that tricky area of Eurasia and Australia).
2. People complaining about ads. If you had any idea of the offers Rocketboom is receiving for ads or sponsorship or even corporate take over, the kind of money that they are turning down because they want to keep doing their own thing and be true to their fans, would you still complain? Probably. Thats why you dont have to watch the ads since they are placed at the end of the episode. So anyone saying the advertisements are shoved in their face needs to figure out there is a pause button.
With that, Rocketboom has done an incredible job staying true to its roots while revolutionizing the medium (great new search feature by the way!) and I want them to keep going because they support the internet community and we should support them.
It is funny how any science that does not fit into the Conservative agenda is fake. Of course, if the much learned, Rush Limbaugh says global warming if liberal jibber-jabber, it must be so. The only scientist who say there is no global warming are the one who are paid to by big business. WE can only hope that somehow global warming is not happening. The sad truth is that the most objective of scientists believe it is happening — and it could have deveistating effects globally in our lifetime. Of course, this big problem has to be put on the back burner until it is irreversable, because the current administration had made such a mess of the world.
Why do we care who was here first? The issue is who is here now (otherwise the cockroaches and rats would kick us all out).
There are rights and privileges associated with citizenship, and there are associated costs.
When the “illegal drivers” rally together and demand amnesty for their illegal driving, then we’ll deal with them (or not); so far no national group of illegal drivers has demonstrated the balls to protest for their right to violate the law and not be prosecuted.
Currently people in the country illegally are massing to demand amnesty simply because they managed to violate the laws, and they attempt to legitimize their demands by ignoring that their actions are illegal.
Try that in Nevada: protest that you should be allowed to keep the winnings you obtained illegally - maybe sometime in the next 20 years someone will find your corpse.
This protest is an insult to those people who follow the laws, and to everyone’s children of as it teaches them that they can do anything they want, legal or otherwise, as long as they cry loudly enough and throw a temper tantrum.
The is especially heinous as its obvious that the rule is really that you can do anything you can pay for.
“r.f.i.d. flame shooting trampoline” is listed in the “Story Links” section, but wasn’t mentioned. Hun?
Here’s an excellent non-partisan resource for all political issue from global warming to illegal immigration. http://www.opencrs.com/ They warehouse reports created by the Congressional Research Service.
This is so twisted. The issue isn’t about immigrants. It is about illegal aliens. When I was a younger lad, I got arrested for pool hopping, er, criminal trespassing. That was a reasonable charge, even though it wasn’t like I was breaking into someone’s COUNTRY! I suppose if I went pool hopping again and got busted for breaking the law, I should demand a free lifetime pass. Afterall, it sounds like people are going to start getting free passes to stay after breaking in and trespassing in the US.

Interesting show as always. The immigrant protest stuff prompts me want to paraphrase Orwell: “All would-be immigrants are equal, but some would-be immigrants are more equal than others.” I’ve got many friends and acquaintances in places like Zimbabwe who are waiting to legally immigrate; their places in line for the American dream have been stolen by some of those marchers. I’d tell my friends to go to Mexico and try to cross into the U.S. from there, but it’s a felony to be an illegal in Mexico.
Amanda, you came dangerously close to flame baiting your viewers with that immigration comment…be careful there, you know I hate it when you do that.
So…Immigration. Lots of passionate opinions about it in the comments. Not too many facts. Anyone know where to find out what the laws in question actually are and just exactly what particular laws these folks are trying to have changed and in what way they want to change them, and what the ups and downs of doing so would likely mean? I honestly don’t feel I have enough info to come to an informed decision on this hot political issue, and in order to understand enough to…
Oh wait I forgot, its just whoever cries “Injustice!” the loudest wins the public and whoever has the most deep pocketed lobbyists wins the policy makers.
Also Amanda’s commentaries kick ass, people! Even when they don’t, cuz she’s Amanda Congdon for RocketBoom, yea!
See my comment from yesterday about yesterday’s ad for my opinion about today’s ad. It’s meant as constructive criticism btw.
have a nice day!
:)
Right on, leron!
Seems like our government does not have a very good grip on processing legal immigrants in a timely manner, going by the letters to the editor in our Omaha Weird Herald. I am thinking that is big part of the problem for folks who might like to do it legally. Look at Germany and other European countries that have not tried to make their “guest workers” part of their country and how that has bit them on the butt. We would be doing ourselves a favor to make these people real Americans, I think.
The “best_of_rocketboom.mov” won’t work on my system (WinXP). Quicktime plays only the audio (no video) and the DivX player (6.2) plays only the video (no audio). Is there a trick to get this to work? When I play it in Quicktime and ask for the Movie Info it says it’s a DivX AVI. Do I need a Quicktime-specific DivX codec to play this puppy so I can get both the audio and video at the same time?
Thanks!

Amanda-
OK First off about this oil profits business. Just two simple stats you need to keep in mind. Gov’t Taxes Per Gallon. 50 cents. Oil Company profits 9 cents per gallon. They just are selling more oil these days to India and China.
Now Kudos to you on something you did note the fact that other politicians did drive gas guzzling cars to their gas press confrences. This is a step in the right direction for you. However, you didn’t name Schumer and Durbin and those guys in that mix but this is good this is a start.
Now as for the picture as a whole. You see MSM gets it wrong and it was purely knee jerk. You see Hastert and all of the Congressional Leadership ride around in those suv’s and armoured cars for a reason: SECURITY. Do we want people who are in the chain of Presidential secession taken hostage and extorted for ransom or killed ? There is a risk to those people in the jobs that they do. Both the Republican and Democratic Leadership does that. You should have given Hastert credit because he was the only one that did show up in a hydrogen car even for the brief period that he could.
Now you mentioned about the illegal alien business if I have it correctly you said they had an impact. Well if they had an impact why did the Washington Post say their economic impact was unclear?
Nonetheless that was progress for you in mentioning that your liberal friends drove gas guzzlers too. Let’s see more of that.
God Bless,
Cheers,
RF
The impact, at least from what was reported on the “news” here in Seattle, was that a lot of businesses closed for the days of the marches, or simply struggled to remain open. They had their pictures taken with the most bizarre, red herring signs I’ve ever seen in my life, trying to make a point to… their bosses, who know very well why they employ them.
I wonder how they will feel when they get legalized and have to start earning citizens’ wages… and competing with the illegal aliens.
There were civilized Native American colonies in the Americas. Whoever wrote that they were “stone age” is just ignorant of the facts.
I would certainly have been here had the Europeans not immigrated, as I am of NA descent.
Andrew, thanks for clarifying Amanda’s statement, but it was still insensitive and bristling. Very Victorian-era, and not in that “oh, what a cute bed & breakfast” way.
Still love the show, that line just made me a little ill.
Cooler than usual.
