  1. Rocketboom’s going up.. up… UPPPP!!

I like the Earthlink ad, nice and simple. On the topic of adverts, I found myself thinking about TRM cash machines the other day, despite the fact that the last time I saw your TRM ads was weeks ago. Those ads really stuck in my mind (good thing for TRM, damn annoying for me!).

  5. UGH!!! — it’s for days like this that I’ve bookmarked your 12/31/05 show (or the more respectful 8/19/05 show edited to replace dancing at the tomb with a shipside boogie).

Earthlink ad: Quaint but lacks the energy and creative oomph of TRM!!

Geek Prom: Scary!! I guess that I am looping. Also, why the delay posting today…technical difficulties with the Geeks or the Earthlinks???

  13. The Geek Prom reminds me of the one and only Star Trek convention I went to. It showed me that I’m really pretty normal, relatively speaking. It does look like a fun party, though. And even though I was pretty glad to get off of Earthlink, I like the ad.

  15. Seems to be a great divide among the fans over RB selling out. I think there’s definitely a better feel to something that doesn’t look corporate, but it’s also probably the only direction one can go.

All in all, the ad was kinda lame. Well edited, well executed, but why shove it right into the episode? Give us a banner, a link, something other than shoving the ad right at us. Only the hardcore RB fans will worship you for that, and that’s just because they’ll worship you for anything.

I’m not angry. This is probably the direction RB has to go, but it’s also nice to remember the good old 4:3 aspect ratio days…

  18. I don’t mind a little advertising. After all it’s the second largest business in the world. A girls got to do what a girls got to do. It’s sell out, not put out.

Selling out. We so often talk about it. We get pissed when our favorite band goes in a different direction or takes on sponsorship. I can remember aroud 20 years ago, going to see Steve Winwood in concert and the curtain in front of the state had a micelob beer logo on it. I was frustrated. Here was one of my favorite rock stars “Selling out”

As I have gotten older, my views have changed/softened on what I consider selling out.

As for Rocketboom, I trust that you guys are dedicated to keeping Rocketboom real and am all in support of whatever you choose to do to grow and keep Rocketboom coming.

“Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone.”

You guys are my inspiration. Taking an idea and doing something you love, and changing the way the world works. Enjoy the ride and just remember to always stay true to yourself.

  20. Well said Ken. Seeing an ad was disheartening. But I haven’t been sending rocketboom $20 bills either. Making this stuff sure isn’t free. So I can understand.

  22. RB having one lil ad at the end is just fine. at least its at the END. if anyone thinks that amanda and drew should let RB continue on purely for fun without making a dime, they are foolishly mistaken. honestly, to all those who think RB has “sold out” wouldn’t YOU take this opportunity to make a lil dough? they’d be crazy not to and as long as the material is still golden, i’m fine fine fine with it!

  24. Amanda,

My two cents: Today’s outfit was professional and flattering. The ad was an improvement over TRM, nicely done. I’ll pass on the Geek Prom.

  28. I wish I could go to Geek Prom…I don’t think I’m geeky enough, but I wish I was a bit more, at least in an analog old skool sense.

Are there going to be ads everyday?

BTW I just got a perm and I think that Amanda should get one, too.

  29. The 1st Earthlink ad was better than the 1st trm ad. Nice form, a little entertaining, even.

But…it was lacking, sadly. Where was the bottom line? This ain’t an ISP you’re selling - it’s a phone service running over a high speed connection. At least that’s what the 1st thing you see on the page is: EarthLink TrueVoice. That’s misleading bc many of us primarily know earthlink as a dial up isp from the stone age. And..why’s this voip better than vonage or any other voip service? Why shouldn’t I just use skype?

Also, it says they’re offering 8 Mbs down for $70/mo, but doesn’t say what they’re offering up. Yes, we care about upstream. Not to mention the somewhat nefarious practice of fine printing the soul sucking yearly contract w a hefty termination fee of $149.95. And…why’s this better than Verizon Fios, which offers 15 Mbs/down for $50/mo, anyway?

And did you notice that earthlink has links to all 5 of your commericals (v.o.i.c.e.) but as of 8:02 pm est 5/1/06 they all link to today’s commercial - that’s misleading. Again. Sigh…

Seriously. Your audience is not composed entirely of technophobes. Don’t treat us that way. I hear the words “Earthlink TrueVoice” and it directly translates to “Pure Marketing Crap” like so much else in the world.

A good ad is both entertaining and treats the viewer like an informed and educated consumer, telling the viewer why their product/service is better than everything else that’s available. Of course, by that metric, good ads are like a needdle in a haystack of crappiness and deception.

Oh well at least seeing the geek prom was sorta cool.

Very nice work on the ad. the “official” credits at the end are a bit conventional though, the old anonymous credit roll is one of your trade marks. Perhaps what you could do to give credit is put a link to detailed credits on the site for each episode.

I am and remain a big RB fan.
