  3. Uhhh. Okay, I am little concerned… Normally open minded, however the resources, the backend infastructure, and the processing of the data, even for a company as large as Google would be an insurmountable task, today. Seems easier, ummm less cumbersome to tag items and recycle based on the tags and not worry about tracking. Insurance, and disaster relief takes care of the personal loss issue, forget the fact that people in hurricane “zones” should have some knowledge of where they live and the consequences of that choice.
To that end, Mr. Olsen may be better served to let that idea take less control of the rest of his life, the same advise doctor Phil recently gave to an inventor of a nail polish holder. Otherwise, OK show.

But hey, I could be wrong ;)

    Peace OUT!

  4. I don’t know. The jury’s still out on the RFID thing. The proponents claim they will revolutionize the way things are bought, sold, and now I guess recycled, and the opponents fear that they will be the next salvo in Big Brother’s war on privacy. I think the reality will be somewhere in between. I don’t think I like the idea of some agency knowing what all my stuff is doing all the time, nor do I think that a disaster large enough to require immediate governmental mobilization is likely to need my sneakers to alert them, but it would be handy if I can just pass my cart of groceries through a large scanner and get an instant total. This is, however, a good interview, and should spark some spirited debate. One question I have, though, is how much energy and material would it take to break down a pair of sneakers into their constituent parts for reuse, and would it be less than making a new pair?

Um, yeah. Sign me up! If I could do away with the large ring of keys I have now, I’d accept a chip in my neck. I would love to put tracking chips in my kids…why is it okay to put chips in your dog in case he runs away but not your child to protect them from those who would do them harm? Their rights? What rights? It is my job to get them to the ripe old age of 18 without becoming a drug addict / corpse / prostitute / what have you. Happy 18th, let’s get you un-modded, shall we? Wow, this turned into a rant, didn’t it?

My heart is unburdened my souls been set free,
    beautiful dreams returning to me,
I longed for the moment my eyes would not mist,
feeling at last I really exist,

The grass looks much greener, the skys a clear blue,
the smell of spring flowers, the damp smell of dew,
    looking forward no longer back,
my demons are gone, no longer attack.

  8. I think i’ve just seen Big Brother! And it’s frickin scary. He looks like one of those men in black. Tagging is okay???? Hey buddy, why not donate your hair to the Wig Society for chemo cancer patients when you cut that rag of yours. Tag my shoe? Over my dead body.

And the thing about in a democracy we don’t have to worry? Has this guy been looking at the Bushy headlines in recent months.

This is the most frightening episode of Rocketboom I’ve ever seen. These people suck you in with “environmentally friendly” candy like RDIFs, saying they want to keep track of things for benevolent reasons and like he said, the next thing their breaking down your door cause your eating Cheerios and not new improved Corn Flakes with Omega Factor X.

Speaking of flakes, I think the guy (whatever his name is) interviewed is one biggun.

    RDIF my ass.

  9. The manufacturer already knows what’s in my shoe, or my chesterfield, or any of the other things that would normally end up in a landfill. The energy required to pull my shoe apart and recycle it is significantly more than is required to replace it.

Sterling’s fiction isn’t bad, but the man is a quack.

Arghh. I wrote a long comment but lost it due to server error. Oh well. To summarize: I agree basically with what B-man said. This argument in favor of surveillance-out-of-control under the guise of environmentalism is preposterous.

My idea: spend a slightly less astronomical amount on nanotechnological development, and learn to disassemble all waste- animal, vegetable, mineral- molecularly into their constituent elements. They can then be reassmbled appropriately. Who knows, you might cure some diseases in the process. And we’ll all save time sorting trash! OK, I admit I kinda stole my idea from Neal Stephenson.

On an unrelated subject, I think it’s great that Andrew personally responds to emails, even when a response is not needed or expected. That’s why vlogs are better than TV, and that’s why RB is a paradigm for blogs. You guys rock(et).

  23. THIS JUST IN… A crazy man was arrested this afternoon in a upper east neighborhood. Eye witnesses say the naked man was running around with a stolen shoe, blabbing about how somebody had taken his identity and had all his personal possesions hacked and transferred to their name instead of his, though he had possession of a shoe the police had used the S.P.I.M.E.S network to verify it wasnt him…though the man had a scar over his right temple, investigators say it’s doubtful that anyone could have replaced his RFID tag and lasered the wound together so precisely without the proper equipment of at least a Quickie Med (located at finer Get Healthy 4 Less Wal-Marts). The man, Bent Toofar, has no prior history, no family, and it is likely he is just crazy. In an un related story, Former host of Rocketboom, Amanda Congdon, was arrested for criminal mischief at a downtown concert, police say she was yelling “free Olsen” and gesturing to the crowds with one finger proud… Congdon, has been relocated three times since the show ended 4 years ago… She is awaiting trial and a new RFID transplant so her identity can be hidden from the public domain… Apparently she was upset that people were selling knock off versions of her “tagged underwear” on EBay.

Chuck and leron’s comments have reflected pretty much what I’ve been thinking. Actually, Chuck’s comment sounded like I wrote it myself.

I agree nanotechnology can be used as a weapon, particularly a rich vs. poor one. I was talking about a controlled environment such as at a waste managment facility, not all over the place, but I suppose there’s always the Andromeda Strain scenario. Also see Stephenson’s book, “The Diamond Age: Or, a Young Lady’s Illustrated Primer.” Anyway, technology already abounds that allows rich people to “melt” poor people- i.e. neutron bomb. Biological viruses are already much more powerful than any “robotic viruses” that a government would likely invest in. As far as wise guys “taking care” of evidence, well, there’s always the wood chipper, Fargo style. I guess my point was that there’s no doubt that, eventually, we will have to recycle 100% of our waste, and I’m not sure tracking every molecule of matter is the answer.

Anyway, I digress. I agree with Drew that too little information was revealed about Bruce to come to much of a conclusion. I had a feeling that the interview was taken a little bit “out of context” for those people, like me, who don’t know much about him.

  28. Let’s see if I can summarize what Bruce Sterling was saying: “Won’t anybody think of the shoes?”

Hm, doesn’t have the same ring to it as “won’t anybody think of the children?”–especially when being used to justify more efficient concentration camps. Or wasn’t that what Bruce Sterling was trying to say? I got distracted by all the straw men in that room.

    Boomshanka, Bruce!

BTW, Chuck, if you do not like us coming here because of the pretty lady and her bubble-gum presentation, then stay at your own vlog, where you have, what?, three viewers? That’ll teach us!

  31. The idea of tagging a shoe with information as to what it contains is a good one, but does it really need to be a radio frequency tag? That seems a bit overkill to me. And making it some other tag could likely get rid of all the other concerns Sterling raised.

Seems to me more like he was showing us you can’t get the good without getting the bad, rather than the other way around….

  32. Call me stupid but I don’t get what this whole thing was about. So you tag a shoe. Then what? I don’t get it. What do you differently with a tagged shoe than a normal one? And what the hell does a tag on your shoe have anything to do with hurricanes? Huh? I guess I’m stupid. Please. I’m a journalist by trade, and not to be high-minded or condescending, but you guys need to better explain your stories for the mass audience.

  33. It is a difficult concept. Believe it or not, this is actually one of the more down-to-earth discussions on spimes. Wikipedia’s Spime entry is a great launchpad to learn more about them.

Spimes and hurricanes: If your shoe is a spime, the rescue teams know where to find you. And your dog. It’s just a hypothetical situation showing the potential benefit of trackable objects. I’d rather not be so trackable by the guv’mint, myself.

    Chuck,

I appreciate, as I’m sure thousands of others do, the variety of information that you and the other RB staff pack into a three-minute show every day, particularly on the subjects that aren’t likely to be brought to our attention otherwise. As Drew stated in Austin, a benefit of vlogs and the whole long tail thing is that obscure or initially shunned ideas can more easily come into widespread acceptance, perhaps for the benefit of all. I’m not convinced that spimes are the best solution, but I suppose I agree with the intent. You’ve done a good job considering the amount of time you had for presentation- I hope you guys get the monthly subscription service up and running soon so that more crew and resources can be paid for, and we can get longer shows. Keep up the good work.

Having intimate contact with the refuse stream leads me to applaud this man. Refuse is a problem. We (Southern Connecticut) burn some of ours and alot (ten rail cars a week) is shredded and shipped to a giant landfill in Ohio,
There are scrubbers now that promise zero emissions at the stack…
so we could burn everything, but higher uses could be found. As far as I am aware, no one really sorts garbage at all now, but it is huge problem that must be addressed. If manufacturors can be co-erced into embedding a twelve-cent tag with all that info, it could lay the footwork for countless types of sorting and high-grade removal of various materials.
As far as potential abuse goes…hasn’t man abused every invention since fire…the wheel, the knife, the boat, modern medicine, the computer? I can see dudes scanning people, peoples homes, businesses, factories, vehicles…
