  2. I liked those nary a glance on their way no matter what New Yakwers, not sure they were “moved” by your art.
I call it art if they stop and stare at it. I call it Art if a gallery owner’s line of BS will persuade Mr. and Mrs. Pennypacker to spend gobs of money on it.

  3. Anything that isn’t food, shelter or clothing or the pursuit of attaining food, shelter and clothing is art.

Any expression or act beyond what is needed to sustain us is art.

This leads to the money/art debate. I define wealth as how long can you go without working. If you create art and make money at it, it’s not art. Once you attain a point where you don’t need to to create art for money, it’s art again.

I don’t trust anyone who calls him or herself an artist or what he or she creates “art”. Those are labels for another generation to decide. To give such names in the present is just uselessly pretentious.

  11. Art for arts sake. Isn’t the creative act alone justify artistic creativity? But it is not ts is reason enough for pursuing them. There is talent, education and time that goes into art. Art is not a finished product, but the last stage of the creative process. It is the end result of the process. Not the process. Also, art does not have to serve purposes, but it does need to follow the process.

Our society is addicted to mediocrity and gets by. We have sold out as a society and ignore the arts. Unless they are graphic designers, multimedia developers and/or web developers.

So, what is good art? By today’s standards it is dependent on the flux of fad. What was it before? Art was the end result of the creative process.

    Blah blah blah….

Long fingers embrace the fruit, her wrist.

  34. God, this has got to be the most tired dead horse of a topic ever. Art is not dead, but the argument over what is, is.

It is simple folks. Art is what an artist says is art. An artist is someone who points at something and says “that’s art”.

Art is not about quality. It isn’t art if it is good and not art if it is bad. It insn’t art if it is expensive and it isn’t art if it is recycled. It isn’t art if it is handcrafted and it isn’t art if it is readymade.

Art is simply looking at things from a different angle, or though a different lens. The street looks different if you call it art. You look at it differently, consider it from an aesthetic, political, social, even economic point of view rather than just the utilitarian “street” that you usually hardly notice.

Now, some art is more effective than other art at getting the audience to look, while some audiences are more effected by certain types of art than others, but whether or not it is art is just a dumb question.

Still, I did like the show, but I don’t agree on the wig. Amanda, you have lovely hair… don’t hide it.

  35. Great piece on Art Amanda. I love it!!!

art is really anything (and I mean anything) that expresses or results from the culture of a society or individual. yes, even the stupid Geico commercials are art.

Art is whatever the “Cognoscenti” decree is this year’s Sensation Of The Century. (to paraphrase “The Painted Word” which is still a very cogent and accurate indictment of the Art world).

  47. For everyone out there who enjoys a good laugh at the whole “what is art” debate, check out some of the work of the Dada-ists.

In the 30’s, an artist named Man-Ray and his pals used to can their own feces and sell it to the “artistocracy” as high art. Then they would have a good laugh at the ridiculousness of the so-called art world.
