Rocketboom

  1. I agree that spore will completely change computer gaming. When you watch that full video, the “wow” and “holy crap” count is through the roof. Will Wright is a genius.

Are we obsessed with RSS 2.0 on Rocketboom? It’s becoming the latest geek question, replacing “Does it run on Linux” with “does it handle RSS 2.0 with media enclosures?” - should a video camera (yesterday) really support RSS?

  9. I was a geek AND I went to my prom… but I was the kind of geek that attended the prom with hair styled like Princess Leia in Return of the Jedi…

Too bad you didn’t include pictures of Amanda and Andrew at their respective proms!

  10. Is it me or has Amanda just talked directly about a computer game for the first time ever?

That horse song was great, now I wonder if we can make real horses sing rather than neigh by using genetic manipulation, what would the world be like…

    Anyways great show :)

  15. I’m thinking RB should put out a call for geeky prom photos. Mine is really horrendous! Um, I’d have to figure out how to scan it in. Er, maybe not.

Great episode, lots of interesting things today.

    Cheers,

  29. Oh Most Excellent RB Staff:

Allow me to geek-out a while with an extra long comment. And please pardon the irrelevance to today’s topic as well as my risking setting off another powder keg in the otherwise begnign batch of comments.

I’ve only been a fan for a little over a week, but am sure that I’ll be a fan and loyal viewer for a long time to come. I’d have been a fan for longer if I’d known your vlog existed, or if I’d been watching vlogs/podcasts at all. What can I say, I guess I’ve been living under a rock.

I can also say that, in the eight or nine days since first viewing RB, I have gone back and watched every single episode in the archives. Well, except for the four or five that aren’t loading correctly for one reason or another. Sound obsessive and dysfunctional? Well, maybe. So the ultra-conservatives, instead of tearing me a new one upon reading what I have to say, will dismiss this as ramblings of a madman. Those fans of RB who truly support everything that Andrew, Amanda, et al have done (yes, including the Katrina dramatization, the young republican “switch,” and the pledge omission) might just know what I’m talking about.

This comment is mainly about the people who have such an adverse reaction to some of the material and behave as if one of you had just murdered their close relatives. Frankly, I don’t understand it. Of all places, this vlog should be a venue for you to freely express ANY sentiment without being harassed and threatened with deportation. Then they say “this country was founded under God for…” and “they fought for you to be able to…” and “if you don’t like it, then leave.” All I can see in these comments are hypocrisy and contradictions. Expressiveness: good. Rude, redundant, and relentless badgering: bad. Or annoying, anyway. I can’t pretend to know exactly what the founding fathers were thinking, but if I remember my junior high history correctly, I believe what they probably would have said was, “if you don’t like it, then you’ve come to the right place!” I think it’s probably safe to say that one of them, at one point, expressed a sentiment similar to Voltaire’s: “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.”

I think we live in frightening times. Not just because of terrorism, but because of how easy it is to scare people, to appease them or to make them flee in a stampede of so many fascist sheep, with a few words (or lack thereof) about a fictitious character who, dare I say, they portray as being on par with the flying spaghetti monster and the invisible pink unicorn. My favorite color is green. Does that offend anyone?

I haven’t excluded what many call God entirely from my philosophy. But really, if one thinks about the size and complexity of the universe- with its 70 sextillion stars and 100 nonillion-or-so mile diameter- its life span being estimated by some to be one googol years- it’s difficult to imagine that its supreme creator really cares about earthly things like testing faith, pitting one army against another, or pledges of allegiance.

Mr. Orwell must be quite rapidly turning in his grave right now. I mean, like a Dremel tool. Um, unless he was cremated.

Keep up the very good work. I hope nothing changes, even after several million in corporate sponsorship. Well, I suppose things should change if you see fit, which I guess is one of my points. One change I’ve noticed is that Amanda has become much more “authoritative-” and mature-sounding over the past 16 1/2 months. Shiny. Not that there was anything wrong with her delivery in the early episodes.

I’ll end with the dying words of a character from my favorite space western:
“I don’t care what you believe. Just believe it!”

    Oh, and…
    “All Hail The Great Alliance!”

    Just kidding.

P.S. Congrats on the 40K! It’s kegger time!

oops- 180 sextillion miles in diameter, and I misspelled benign. I shall now flog myself.

Another question: I’d like to do what I can to help RB. In seeding a torrent, are there any inherent risks to my computer or files?

I’d volunteer as your San Francisco correspondent, but I have a problem with cameras being pointed at me.

From the German-speaking part of California,
