More non-English language reports!
Thank you for reminding me why I look forward to watching Rocketboom every morning. Where else would I see such an interesting story about people who actually care about voting?
The new format is terrific, clear as a bell.
It’s nice to see a mini documentary (once in a while).
Miss the old desk. You should sell it on e-bay as a pop culture artifact.
The new video format is wasting my time. Need more speed! There’s no need to see the perfect resolution in each nose hair. Just give me a repost that will load in realtime without pausing and pausing and pausing…!
They have Ugandan ballot boxes on sale at Home Depot for $3.00 each and 4 for $10.00. Hey, you could hold your own election, coup, takeover, whatever.
Where are the political pundits? Where are the Republican comments? Paper balloting is far easier to police than the electronic balloting here in the states. It intrigues me that when we see neat story about the world outside the U.S., the only comments posted are about nose hairs, downloads and resolution.

Great story. I think that is the first time I have seen a report out of an African nation where the people were interviewed. It seems to me that all I can recall from any ‘real’ news stories from the Dark Continent involved crooked politicians and tribal warfare. It’s fascinating to hear the real people speaking.
Ok, love RB, am hooked, etc. But two things bug me.
1. G.W. Bush doesn’t seem to know there’s a T in Unites States and United Nations. As in “Unystates” and “Unynations”. Wait, that’s not RB…
2. Amanda doesn’t seem to know there are 3 As in her name. As in “Hi, I’mmanda Congdon and this is Rocketboom”.
Amanda - a little more careful with the pronunciation. please! Otherwise your diction and delivery is great, befitting a trained actress. Give your name it’s full credit!

hi amanda
RB reverbs me thinking: actual content in comment.

Interesting show and great reporting. A few things feel out of whack to me though — and for the record, this is my first complaint!
1. I agree with Leron… I need to see the opening graphics. When I first saw your show it was the one thing that really got me jazzed about your show. I even watched still by still to see if I could recognize the landmarks or shots. PLEASE BRING IT BAAAAACK! Seems like there’s some wasted time at the end when the website slowly zooms out.
2. Why was Amanda so ZOOMED IN this morning? I didn’t like the close-up. I mean, what’s the point of sending in our t-shirts if you can’t even see them? Plus, I liked seeing the keyboard on the desk and having the wide view. It looked great on Monday.
3. As seen in the John Edwards interview and seen today with the Uganda interviews, when people are interviewed the sound level is much lower. Can you make it more uniform so I don’t have to adjust my volume during the show?
Still a huge fan, thanks for listening!

People seem to be ignoring the most important issue about today’s episode: the Ugandan correspondent does not wear t-shirts as well as ‘Manda.
Its important to maintain one’s perspectives and priorities.
I love Ruud’s reports.
I am the person that sent the information dealing with City Watchers here in Cincinnati. It still seems relevant since it is a national first involving chip tracking for employees.
I also thought it was interesting that even in this budding democracy that you can already see the two party split right away. There is the Republican that is telling people not to worry and that an obviously faulty system is perfectly fine and that no one should be worried about any misdeeds even though there is no reason to believe that someone who is ruthless and would do anything to win would not take advantage of this situation, like a Republican in Florida a couple years ago.
I also see the opposing democratic side that believes in the system to the extent that cheating never occurs to them and they faithfully follow the guideline of the system while the winner gets to do whatever he wants to do.
Its just interesting to see how even at the onset of a democracy, the government cant be trusted.

write me back and give me feedback on my post.
It’s bad enough here in the US to try to get people to come out to vote in a high school, fire house or wherever they set up the polling stations. Imagine if we made people show up to a big field and vote in a Tupperware container.
Great story that shows the power of Internet-based media Imagine hearing the news from the perspective of the people that live in foreign countries without it being processed and interpreted by stateside pundits! Thanks, RB, for hosting such great content alongside the (very necessary) silly stuff.
Looks like the new format is too big for my iPod! I’m not sure if using an HDV camera (not HD, big difference) to make web videos is a good use of new technology. Do you want to increase the number of viewers or give them a better shot of those nose hairs? I’ll miss you guys! I only watch podcasts on my iPod! Have you ever seen how good you looked when they played out to a TV set? Your missing the boat!
I mean, then only time someone should use an HD (or HDV) camera is when the target audience is expected to be watching the video on an HD set. If not, your just wasting bandwidth. Your new “widescreen” HDV format is now 480 x 270 as opposed to your previous iPod-friendly 320 x 240. So what have you done? You’ve lost compatiblity for a few extra pixles. In fact, your old DV camera actually shot in 720 x 480 (higher than your 480 x 270) See? Creating a 480 x 270 file IS still possible from the original DV source. There is more video quality than the number of pixels you use! Just zoom the camera in a little (like you did with the new Sony) and then adjust the render size before the post. I’m sorry, I just don’t see the point in switching formats. You were my “Hero of the Small Screen” a real pioneer of future media. I think your off track now. Either prepare different podcasts files for each format or settle on the one that makes the best impact. Believe me, the OLDER format looks better playing from my iPOd onto a standard TV than the NEW format looks on my computer screen (where it is now trapped!). I urge you to re-look at your misson statement (if it exists) and honestly examine how a larger format helps you reach your goals. Just because you CAN do something, doesn’t mean you SHOULD.
Tremendous episode. These kinds of episodes are really inspirational not only because they exemplify the idea of international community but they do it in a manner that is fresh and not contrived like so many reports we see on television. Love RB.
Amanda,
Great to see foreign stories. Really great to see story about a foreign election that needs to be watched due to vote fraud. Keep it up!
i don’t like the new widescreen format — can’t see Amanda’s chest anymore :(
How about a crossover show. Someone opens a Kampala election box and out pops the Super Secret Dance Society. Then everybody would be happy.
BIGGER IS BETTER!
Podsters, buy a computer and hi-speed service.
Amanda, you can take up my entire screen anyday.
Keep on pushin straight ahead.
hmmm….good head!
Thanks Drew! I have been running around for weeks showing off your podcast using my iPod hooked to a TV. This is TV AFTER CABLE I have been shouting. Watching program this way should stike fear in the heart of every NETWORK and CABLE Exec everywhere! I really believe you guys are pioneering a GREAT change in the world of media. I’ll keep looking for the old iPod version again, go get the $20 AV cable though and check it out! You’ll be amazed! A 30 minute podacst can take 5 minutes to download and now rivals an analog cable signal in quality when played back on a TV. Wowee! Hate to be You Bright House!
Amanda…U rook Marbelous en wide screen.
All I know is that it began in Afrika ka ka ka ka
I noticed that you had mormon people guest-starring. Is that a new thing?
With this report, RB seems more like a news show/program. I like it. Nice map at the beginning showing where Uganda is, and although very local, nice to see what’s going on over there.
My brother in Colombia is going to start a videoblog, how can he become a RB correspondent?
Hey, much better phone format today. The last 2 episodes wouldn’t play right (video and sound sync issues). Glad you went back to the “legacy” compression for us .3gp phone users!
RB is awesome. Gotta say that first. My mom taught me to sandwich criticism. :)
Amanda! Think about putting BLACK bars on the sides of the video that doesn’t fit your new format. The white bars on the sides are a bit jarring! :)
Nice T-Shirt
the president candidate on that poster with his shinning smile and the key on his side….AWESOMLY GROSS!!!! this was interesting, but you should show technological things in this countries, that they have, for not always to be pitty for them, for example here in our (argentina) neighbor uruguay, a guy invented a kind of engine that works on compressed air that impulses a bike with one charge for 100 km….now bush invades uruguay to take all the air
Great new format. Things look so good. And, by the way, anyone thinking about Amanda’s chest might do better keeping it in their imagination.
Cheerio!
Great show … revealing, down-to-earth snapshot of a foreign culture that made me care a lot more than a dozen wordy WaPo ‘newsanalyses’ would have.
Am I the only person who realized that the individuals interviewed in this story were better educated than those interviewed in front of the New Orleans Super Dome last August?!?
Hey, love the site, but noticed the sound seems a little echo-ie since the new format. I went back and compared. Just thought you’d like to know.
John
Thanks so much. This coverage was tremendous.
I agree with pretty much everything the well-spoken Leron said at 9:17 am; that’s my vote for the comment of the week!!
Cheers,
Connie
I love RB - just love it. The report from Uganda today was everything reporting should be - and it reminded me of my most awesome voting experience. I moved to Berkeley in 1987, and in my first vote there, the ballot boxes weren’t sealed! Yikes! I made them seal the boxes - everyone was quite pissed at me (poll workers), but the poll captain did affirm I was correct, secured the ballot boxes, and that was never a problem again. That happened in the Quaker church around the corner from my house. Thanks for bringing back a great memory (and you usually do). lq
